Modern Warfare 2 'killed' PSN for awhile

After selling almost 5 million copies in its first day, the blockbuster smash Modern Warfare 2 had also "killed" the PlayStation Network, causing server overloads earlier in the day.
Says developer Infinity Ward's Rob Bowling: "It's a server overload not a bug in the code. They're working to have servers back up ASAP. MP servers gradually coming back online. Some users may still experience issues."

"Looks like it was the amount of connections at once that killed PSN."

As the day progressed however, the problem was solved and Bowling's last Tweet says: "PS3 Status update of the day: PSN Multiplayer should be running at full capacity. We expect smooth skies ahead."

I experienced the crash yesterday. Playstation Network was down for a short period, and MW2 was down until about 8:00 PM eastern time. It seems as though everything is running fine now. All IW has to do now is fix the broken party system feature. It is hard to get players into your party, but there is a trick to do so.

Server overload? LOL, looks like some moron in Japan didn't prepare for this...

Kinda scary when you think that the next big network game is MAG. 270 players all at the same time on the same screen.

Oh, that's why when PSN and Xbox Live are compared, they say "You get what you pay for." Good to know.

the funny thing is your paying for the same thing. xbox live still is P2P, meaning the online game is runing off another player. The servers are only used for matchmaking. anybody remember this? http://kotaku.com/343152/microsoft-says-...-server-strain. and i will admit, i was pi$$ed of that i lost a day of noob_pwnage

The PC servers are also free, and they didn't go down. Considering the PC version also runs on a MS operating system, I still don't know what people mean when they say "you get what you pay for"...the servers are the same speed or slower than the free servers, and the store is pathetic compaired to the PSN store. I guess they mean "You pay for microsoft, yet get ripped off"

X-BOX gets you coming and going with paying $100 for a WI-FI accessory and $60 a year for X-BOX Live!!! I'm sorry, but I will put up with a few glitches when all of that is included in the up front price of PS3!!!! And anyone who doesn't, is just a plain fool in my book!!!! Not to mention you get one of the upper grade blue ray players to boot!!!

Live is $50 a year, and is FAR superior to the PSN. Why do you think live is more popular?

Cause it's been out since 2002? I dunno...

Though I was wondering what happened to PSN, so it's good to know everything is back in order. The outage was sort of good, as it gave me time to actually go through the campaign completely. I wonder, how many people were actually online?

@three_nil
Anyone who would pay 100 for a wifi adapter and 60 for live would be an idiot when they are available for much less. Where do you come up with these inflated prices. Do your research.

Those are the same people who buy their bluetooth headset at their local wireless providers offices instead of checking it out at the office and then finding it online for about 30-40% cheaper. Probably the same people who buy name brand clothes like Ralph Lauren at high end department stores when you can get the same clothes at Burlingtons for a lot better price. Some people just dont have enough sense to shop around.

I paid 59.99 for X-BOX live at circuit city last year b4 they went under! And the WI-FI adapter is 99.99 at every store from Wal-mart to Best buy! Thats where I am getting my inflated prices from. And lets just say that live is $50, thats still $150 over the price of the PS3, plus an additional $50 a year for live afterwards! If you get live for 4 years, you could of just bought 2 PS3's for the same price if you buy the 80 gig that they are now selling for $299!!! And played on line for free!!! Plus, with PSN just adding netflix to the mix, just like live did, what advantage does live have?

lol live is more popular because of Halo and Gears of War which are not that great of games anyway!

i been playing on live for almost five years and i always pay 49.99 for my 12+1 month cards and i live in Philadelphia PA.i think both are a good service PSN is a good free service and live is a good paid service.get what you like and do it moving.

Silly bickering over flavor of gaming platform. To each his own.

That said, PC gaming ftw.
