Thats great news especially for those who have never bought the portable memory for the 360. What would be even better is the support for external hdd. That should assist in the decision making of people who still do not own one of the top 3 consoles.

That would require them not limiting space.....and they HATE doing that....

Just updated & attached a portable hdd,it's recognised tho it wants to format it can't let that happen it's got stuff i need so for now at least an external will work, assuming once it's formatted (strange as the drive has two partitions the first being fat32) yeah anyway if it does work it'll be limited to 16gb

Thats how they want it......

An HDD can be used for music, pics & movies anyway.
The 16gb limit (32gb if 2 x 16gb flash drives are used) is only concerned with game saves etc.
Personally I prefer keeping my Xbox drive solely concerned with game saves & XBL downloads and using an external HDD (formatted with hfs+ so as to avoid the FAT32 4gb file size limit) for music, movies & pics.....or I can just stream them from my PC.

My train of thought was for saves being able to be put there i can't remember if that external was detected before or not meh the box knows it's there now, just gotta move a stack of stuff off it & see if saves can be done, gawd knows i need to make backups of farcry2 that game has the buggiest game saves ever that work one minute & not the next at this rate i'll never finish it..lol..

OK so does this mean that I can plug in my usb drive with music and video and be able to play them from there?

For a game save it's fine not much use for anything else since stuff like extra maps & a lot of content can't be backed up,to be honest i'm disappointed,it's understandable ms wouldn't want you giving others content etc some of us however genuinely want to have a backup, guess i'll have to use xplorer360 a bit ironic that they've just made me turn to hacking..lol..

Edit: using a flash drive to try the new update out on

Thanks, Microsoft. Another month or two and piracy will turn this update into something useful

More likely, a custom firmware will make this useful by at least supporting flash drives over 16GB (WTF Microsoft...64GB flash drives have been out for a long time!)

Christ a 32gb flash drive over here is like 100 freak'n bux,you can shout me a 64gb one killer :p

CFW, piracy, more or less the same. Unauthorized either way. Microsoft brought it upon themselves though for being so naive. 16 gigs is a bit pathetic nowadays. And even if they bumped up the limit, you'd still have to repartition which would more than likely erase you had stored in the first place.

I think you guys are a lil misinformed or something. The xbox could always play movies, music and pictures from a USB Flash drive AND a USB External HDD without this update.

This update alows you use it for game saves and storing game content such as DLC or even copying a game to a usb drive and running it (with disk for initial boot of course). While it may not seem anything special for people who already have the xbox drive, it's a cheaper alternative if you don't need to have the xbox hdd but you need space for perhaps DLC for a particular game. Plus carrying your profile on a USB Flash drive beats carrying it on a memory card.

1611.4.2010 22:13

Problem is you can't create backups of all necessary data especially DLC,the whole point of using a memory card is to backup important data & most of your DLC will not transfer

This is horrible.. Iīve been looking forward to this update, since I have an xbox with a broken hdd-connector, and I donīt own a MU. The console is jtagged so all I want to do is add this feature to the dash

Now the problem is, where the hell am I going to install the update to?

Double damn.. iīm going to have to buy a MU, just to be able to use a flash drive as a MU, and that just beats the whole point with this update, doesnīt it?

You better off getting something that will just rip all the data from the 360 HDD.

Did you even read my post?
I only ever mentioned the 360 hdd-connector to say it was broken, so either way that wonīt work. Why would I want to rip the contents of the hdd anyway?

One canīt install updates without a storage device, even IF said update will enable other devices to be used as storage devices..

Catch 22.

DOH! I must have been munch clouds...missed that part.

How is it damaged the top is off so it wont stay on or the pins and everything is fubarded? Do you know if the plug has solder points on the other side?Mabye you can gently solder in a cable.

2114.4.2010 11:10

You can't install the update anyway as it will wipe the hacked dash & replace it with version 8 once that happens you can't re jtag & you can't downgrade,i could'a sworn a jtagged box was able to use any sized hdd thru the USB,yeah i did read that you can run games off it too etc

It has been ripped out (not by me, I got it in a shipment of rrodīs) Iīve done some attempts to do the internal hdd mod, but it hasnīt worked out (Iīd say fubar is an understatement)

Since the XBR-dash is a hacked 8955 dash (there isnīt a new dash afaik) it shouldnīt get updated, I mean xbox live doesnīt try to update my dashboard when I play new games right? I could be wrong.
Anyway, if you read my post too, you would get it, and i would nīt have to explain it to you too..
But here goes, Broken Hdd-connector/ no MU, I canīt save a profile, with this new update I would be able to save a profile and gamesaves on a flash drive WITHOUT HAVING TO BUY A MEMORY UNIT.
Thatīs where the catch 22 comes in, I canīt install the update without a MU or HDD, but with the update I wonīt have any use for either HDD or MU.

Iīm out! Peace!

@ stonerman
If your box was really jtagged & i don't believe it ever was apart from the normal dvd flash, then it certainly ain't jtagged now..lol..sorry to be the bearer of bad news your dash is not jtaggable,i also find it odd you aren't aware the jtag boxes are able to run direct from usb,the update doesn't go to the hdd neither does the dash it resides on the chip itself not the hdd
