Will Sprint Android users finally get 2.1 this week?

Will Sprint Android users finally get 2.1 this week? Promised for the "near future" in early March, it appears that Android handsets on the Sprint network will finally receive the 2.1 firmware update.
XDA Developers revealed the screenshot today, a memo leaked from Sprint itself.

The memo says the Samsung Moment will get the update this weekend and the HTC Hero will get it in the next week.

A leaked Best Buy Mobile memo seems to point to the Hero update coming next week as well but seeing is believing in this situation.

The updates will not be OTA as they are both pretty large (80MB and 117MB respectively) so it seems like they will have to be downloaded manually.

Are you insane? You want to root, that way you can get the new features of 2.1 (and 2.2 when it comes out), while keeping the speed of 2.0.1! 2.1 is a slow pig compaired to 2.0.1; think vista vs XP...I hope 2.2 is WIN7.

Believe me I could easily root my phone. I just don't want to void the warranty just yet (Yeah, I know it's reversible).

Plus, I've heard quite a few horror stories about the custom roms that are available. The best seems to be Fresh 2.0d, but I heard that it has battery issues for quite a few people while others are fine. Also, some people have app incompatibilities. I'd rather wait until the roms mature, but by that time official 2.1 might be out.

I don't use my phone for anything extraordinary so official updates are fine with me... for now.

Convince me otherwise. Please. (I need a push)

DroidMod is an older one, but it works great and still uses the 2.0.1 core. If you really wanted 2.1, you would still be better off using BlackDroid or BuglessBeast...as they are still faster than a stock 2.1, and they offer a lot more features (and IMHO, BlackDroid looks a lot better).

Also, once you go to 2.1 (non-root), you will have a terrible time trying to get root, as they closed the loophole used for rooting 2.0.1 phones. However, once the device is rooted, you can use whatever version you like. This is a very important thing for sprint users, as sprint takes forever to release the new android roms...and you are going to want 2.2 as soon as it comes out.

I have never had any app compatability issues on mine, with 2.0.1 or with 2.1 under root. If anything, non-rooted phones have compatability issues, as they cannot run the many Root-Only apps.

As for the warranty, I did not even know the phone had one. I have insurance on my phone that covers me even if I loose it...so if the phone dies in a way that I cannot reverse root, I will just "loose" it.

Where can I find a clear (think rooting for dummies) tutorial on rooting my moment?

Now I feel like an idiot. I didn't even think of that. I have full insurance on my phone too.

I guess the decision is sound. I shall root. Thanks, KillerBug.

Probably user error, but didn't find anything for the Samsung Moment... any other suggestions?

The "memo" says that the Moment update would be released in April. Well i'm pretty sure this is May, and I don't see an official update anywhere. Sprint? No. Bestbuy? No.

I rooted. Haven't installed any custom roms yet. I need to back up my pictures and stuff and do some research as to what is the current best and try some out.
