UK Conservatives want complete Internet porn block, to force users to opt-in

Written by James Delahunty (Google+) @ 21 Dec 2010 1:25 User comments (33)

UK Conservatives want complete Internet porn block, to force users to opt-in A British conservative MP is pushing for Internet Service Providers (ISP) to be forced to block Internet pornography by default to its subscribers.
Claire Perry, elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Devizes this year, is using children as usual as an excuse for the government-forced censorship. "We are not coming at this from an anti-porn perspective. We just want to make sure our children aren't stumbling across things we donít want them to see." she told the Sunday Times.

The British government will meet with UK ISPs next month to discuss censoring Internet porn, including the possibility of implementing a system that would force Internet subscribers to request access to pornographic content. The Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) in the UK is (obviously) uninterested in such a system being put in place.

Putting aside the inevitable negative reaction from British Internet users who would have to inform their ISP of their intention to view pornographic material, ISPA also points out that such a system would be extremely difficult to implement and would be very expensive to maintain.

It brings up a lot of questions on not only how it would work, but whether such action is the role of a government in a region like Great Britain. Who would make the decisions on what material is porn and what isn't? (is nudity, pornography? what about "suggestive posing?", for example), and who would pay to setup and maintain such a system in the first place?

Also, would this not be the British government mandating that ISPs do a job that should be done (and is done) by parents instead? Do an ample amount of software packages aimed at blocking pornography from children not already exist on the market for parents to use if they feel the need?

Perhaps the most important question is, if a government can force ISPs to block all Internet pornography, what is to stop it from mandating similar censorship for anything else?

Sounds like they are looking to block a whole lot more than porn...something tells me that wikileaks would be on the list of things they don't want people to see (they say children, but this is going to be on every account by default, and some will not remove it because they think it makes them look like perverts or something).

I'M in agreement for a ban on porn but only if they ban party political broadcasts on TV. The sight of those dirty sleazy politician bastards on tv is disgusting.

It's unworkable nonsense, fodder for the sort of Daily Mail reader who doesn't really know or understand anything about it all.

(the DM is a British tabloid renouwned for ridiculous fairy tale ideas of a 'golden age' crime-free white middle class Britain set somewhere in the 1950's.....that actually never was.....you know, the sort that pretends those earning £100,000p.a. and up are 'middle Britain').

What a edited by ddp waste of time and taxes ¨_¨

Have they not got anything better to do, like I don't know, house the homeless, help the poor, maybe invest money in better medical equitment for under-funded hospitals? possibly not force students to pay ridiculous fees?

No lets waste time and money by talking about implimenting a system that would be ridiculously un-cost effective and we will never actaully impliment

I have been watching porn since I was 8 I loved it then and I love it now, I am not a screwed up because of it I don't see the point in trying to block kids from something that really isn't that big of a deal. Why do we try to hide sex more than we do violence?

1621.12.2010 21:26

rubbish. parents should just do they jobs and watch what their children use the internet for. but for the most part this is just a back door to filter out other items. all p2p sites will be blocked due the possibility that they could have porn on them.

all is need is a filter that any idiot can install

As a "child" - if they EVER go through with these plans I swear to God not only will I watch more porn, I'll make sure kids are being sold it on the playgrounds of every school possible AND, I will bring back the days when porn was sold on bad quality (ignore the erm, *bad* part) DVDs to the damn masses !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: I was joking about watching more of it. But the rest is true. Btw, such actions would result in not only ISPs going bust, but the whole porn industry, since teenagers form a huge part of their market !!! And that's a big market. It'd ultimately only be the government loosing out on taxes !!!

I don't know about that. Big Porn makes it's fair share of cash and if you really want something you can buy it.

and you don't think the RIAA/MPAA or the British government could take it over...a couple of 125mm cannon fire from a British class destroyer would sink it. an SAS/Seal scuba team could set under water charges and tople it. a high speed bomber could out run the flak cannons given they still work.

trust me if they wanted gone they'd make it happen, and no-one would know.

its a monopolistic move. it has nothing to do with closet pervs or the children take out free porn sites, generate more revenue from porn DVD sales its as simple as that.

More sales = more tax.

there nothing wrong with porn aslong as the people in the pic or video are 18years or older.I dont agree with young children watching porn but teenagers have sex usually drunk at partys or in their cars (i was a teenger a while back).think some of the pg rated documentries on nazi german or the documentries on war are far more disturbing then watching a naked couple going at it.

btw what exactly do you mean by closet perverts???its normal to find people of the opposite sex attractive in any position.its normal for people to watch strip shows.its normal for people to have sex.just because they dont give every detail about what porn they've been watching or who they be sleeping with, doesnt mean theres anything wrong with them

How did you know of this?? I cant believe a place like that exists! :P

And INHISGRIP.. was has blocking porn got to do with perverts and the safety of children.. that's the sort of crud a blind conservative supporter would say! And you do realise "children" (young/pre-teens) are probably the biggest market for porn any way !!
