Pachter: Nintendo should have Wii 2 in stores already

Pachter: Nintendo should have Wii 2 in stores already Video game industry analyst Michael Pachter has said this weekend that Nintendo has "blown" their chances to compete by not releasing the Wii 2 yet.
Pachter believes that since the Wii 2 will be playing catch-up to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, regardless, it should be available now, and competing in the "online space."

Says the analyst (via CVG):

With as much respect for Nintendo management as I can muster, I think Nintendo's completely blown it with their second generation Wii strategy. I think they have the mentality that to launch a new [console] they have to retire the old, and I think that's wrong.

I think the right strategy would have been to get a second generation Wii out and keep the old Wii at the same time, and have the second generation be the natural progression upgrade model.

Nintendo has been quoted as saying they will not even talk about the Wii 2 until the original Wii has sold 45 million units in America. Wii sales topped 40 million in the States last month.

Pachter concluded:

They should let people start with the Wii and graduate to the Wii 2, and have online functionality and Call of Duty multiplayer on there and compete with the 360. Instead, they're actually conceding that multiplayer market to Xbox 360 and PS3. They've always conceded it, but now with Kinect and Move, it's a lot easier for people to make 360 or PS3 their starter console.

I just think Nintendo's blown it; I think by the time they launch [their next console] if it's Christmas 2011, it's two years too late, and for sure one year too late. So it's over - I don't think they can ever recover.

This is one time where i disagree with the pach-man. I think Nintendo needs to release a new console simply because they can, and if they make it better than the PS3 and 360 they are gonna make bank. They've made so much money on the wii they can afford to sell the newer console at a cheaper price (maybe comparable to the PS3 and 360). They would take a hit for a little while but they would make their money back in the long run. With most of the blockbuster titles being 1st party Nintendo games, and with the 3DS coming out later this year Nintendo will be just fine. Their window of opportunity will never close as long as they deliver an affordable product that is worth having.

remember wii attacks a different market then 360 and PS3 so compairing them is kinda stupid to me as wii is family based console with nice friendly games mostly and the few for the blood fans but the controller based consoles like 360/PS3 are a more serious level which of course will be popular but not in the same market.

Wii is Wii and really only kids, stupid people and new gamers are interested in on a long term basis.

Yea that's a very good point. I got a wii, modded the shit out of it, and now it sits under my TV collecting dust. Every once in a while I'll bust out a quick game of something, but honestly the most fun I've had with my wii was the process of modding it. My niece, however, plays the hell out of her wii. For her there is no better console. There are fun games but nothing that would hold my attention like Fallout 3, Gears of War, or Killzone. Most of the people this thing is targeted to isn't eagerly awaiting a new console like we are. Honestly, the way most of them will find out is by walking through Wal-Mart and seeing it on the shelf and saying 'The new Nintendo is out?' so for them the window of opportunity doesn't even really exist.

I would have to say I agree with that bet. Make it compatible with glasses free 3D technology that we should see start popping up in TVs in a couple years.

I found my Wii has been left to the Nintendo Exclusives which are still fun to play but their online ability is severly lacking and 3rd Party developers seem content to water down the games they port to that console. Still looking forward to the new Zelda though. I hope Nintendo has a golden ace up their sleeve for their next console and you have to give them credit for being the company that started the motion gaming revolution. I really think that Microsoft and Sony would not have done what they did with the Kinect and Playstation Move if it was not for Nintendo starting it 3 years before they did.

Pretty sure Nintendo will be just fine releasing their new system in their own time. They've never really been one to set the trend...maybe the Wii being the exception for controls, but not hardware. They released SNES after Genesis, N64 after PSX/Saturn, Wii after 360/PS3. Still yet their numbers are stronger than ever. They have a strong fan base of families that will keep them strong, and the Wii is still top dog in system sales... http://nexgenwars.com/
That being said, I would much rather play my PS3, but the wife and kids love the Wii!
