PS4 production starting late 2011 for 2012 release? According to the extremely hit-and-miss Digitimes site, Sony is starting production on the PlayStation 4 (PS4) later this year for an expected 2012 launch.
The report cites Taiwan-based component makers who also claim that the PS4 will feature a Kinect-esque motion control system.

Says Digi:

Sony will have Taiwan-based partners begin production of PlayStation 4 (PS4) featuring body movement-based control like Kinect at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, assemblers of PS3, will undertake assembly of PS4 as well, the sources pointed out. The planned shipment volume of PS4 in 2012 is at least 20 million units, the sources indicated.

Sony has long said the PS3 will enjoy a 10-year lifespan like its predecessor but there have been ongoing rumors for years now that the company is planning the PS4 for 2012 or 2013. The PS3 launched in 2006.

I hope it is limited to motion controls; that way I won't feel the slightest urge to give money to Sony for one of these.

Playstation 1: 1994-2004
Playstation 2: 2000-2010
Playstation 3: 2006-____
Playstation 4: ____-____
Playstation 5: ____-____

Can anyone fill in the blanks?

The PS4 will come with a feature that allows you to instantly upload all of your private data to identity thieves while all the while telling you that nothing is going on at all.

I think it is way to early I've had all the PlayStation since the original and if it is going to be released in 2013 they need to have it play all audio and video files that are available without having to stream when i can just plug my usb hdd and play it right away...and probably wont get it and if it is going to be released i think they should sell some wo hdd so we can put our own hdd on it...basically a barebones ps4.

Not floods...most people who could have gotten ripped off canceled their cards and passwords quickly.

It seems that they didn't actually get the 3 and 4 digit codes from the cards. This does not stop them from using the card numbers, but many of the cards will self-lock when the wrong code is tried enough times...if you figure that there are 1000 possible combinations for a visa code, and that the card will turn itself off after 10 bad attempts, that means only 1% of the cards are useable...then factor in the canceled and expired cards and it is probably something like 0.1% useable. Still, that is a good number of cards with a breach this big.

Also a lot of people used the same email and password for lots of different things, like paypal...and there have been a lot more of those thefts since the PSN breach, and some of them seem to be related to PSN, but it is hard to tell as people that use the same info for PSN and PayPal use the same info for every site they go to.

Like we didn't see this new model run coming anyway... There'll be hoopla of speculation here & there of technological wonderment awry only to learn that it's still behind anything sitting on our desks already. Then we'll all soon go back to complaining about how the new console is choking the next computer generation's evolution due to the redundant ability of corporation's inability to conform to a new hardware format...

On second thought, I may not live that long...

I would consider getting one if they sold it half off. Because the price difference between the 160gb and the 320gb is just retarded. Especially when I can buy an external 2tb on sale for like a hundred bucks!

Sony would never do that; they make too much money by charging $50-$100 more for a console that has a drive which costs $5 more retail, $2 more to wholesale. Maybe they will do like they did in the early days of the PS3, where the overpriced model will at least get extra USB ports or a useless card reader or something.

Better yet, they could charge $200 extra for the version with the hard disk that costs $2 more, but these systems would be the only ones that could use linux. Then, they could remove it two years later to inspire people to hack them, thus increasing sales like PS3 jailbreaking did. And if they get sued, they can just use the same lawyers that are delaying the OtherOS case infinitely to delay the new case infinitely.

Anyone else get the feeling that the TOS on this new system will include a line like, "By using this system, you, your soul, and all of your possessions become property of Sony Network Entertainment America, to be used and destroyed by Sony as we see fit."? Most people would just agree to it without reading it...and then Sony could show the lives and possessions of 50,000,000 people on their bottom line...causing the stock value to rise for the first time in years. Plus, they wouldn't have to pay for chinese slave labor anymore...they would have their own slaves.

Smatterings of following in Apple's business model? Yeah!!! I'll play along! Total monopoly, complete control over the human condition... It's the ultimate power trip; but I digress...

TrinUK... I believe we have a winner...

It's beginning to sound more and more like the old adage of giving a kid $100 and refusing to ever let them spend it. Except in this case, make the kid spend several hundred dollars and not reap the benefits of that expenditure.

If Sony wants to sell art then put their stuff in a gallery. Quit selling their product to retailers & outlets. Of course like other artists, you'll have to suffer for years & starve. Probably have to have 2 or 3 vices and more than likely be dead before anyone takes your work seriously before it ever starts to make any money anyway. Otherwise, sit down, shut up, sellout, let people screw with your creation and reap the benefits of your creation as you have been... What? Sony's tired of being able to eat in the here and now all of the sudden?
