Unlocked iPhone 4S goes up for pre-order

Apple has now made unlocked iPhone 4S pre-orders available in the U.S.
The devices have a 1-2 week ship time but all colors and capacities are available.

As of now, unlocked devices are delivery only and cannot be picked up in store.

Unlocked devices will work with all GSM micro SIM cards worldwide.

If you are interested, the 16GB (in black or white) will set you back $649, the 32GB will lighten your wallet by $749 and the 64GB will make you cry at $849.

Why in the h377 would you buy a smart phone for that price. In my opinion the phone isnt even worth 200$. I would rather go out and use that kind of money for something useful. But what do i know, im just an android user.

Yup. You know, a "smart" phone can be called so for being smarter than its owner. ;)

This is the problem with the subsidized phone business. You already pay more than that for any smartphone in the US. It just doesn't show up on your bill that way. Under a more transparent model, you would pay a negligible amount for voice, SMS, and data service and significantly more for the phone. In the end the total would be significantly lower.

The problem now is that you pay the subsidy back whether you get it or not.

Is the iPhone 4S worth $650? That is debatable. However, these prices are not all that different than you will pay for an un-subsidized high-end Android device making the statements like "i'd rather use the money on something useful" and "who said fanbois are smart" completely moot.

I highly doubt anyone here has purchased an unlocked, un-subsidized device.

I have listened to yours and vurbal's opinion, and respect your guy's opinion. What you say is true. I must say that i have a low end device. I should have stated that, but you know its only a comment to a web -site. You all have a good one.

Some people have way too much disposable income.
Maybe if the phone had a longer geek life like four or more years I could almost justify the 32GB model. That is not the case. It's more like $650.00 + sub, taxes etc. every year.

So this is the REAL retail "one off" price of the iPhone!

UNLOCKED are the only type of mobile phones sold here in India. I can get absolutely ANY Android phone I want for under $ 550/=. You have to keep in mind the high import duty - around 16% + high sales tax 12% being included in the final price.
