Geek Squad employee accused of stealing 'racy' pictures off user's iPhone

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 22 Jul 2012 8:01 User comments (44)

Geek Squad employee accused of stealing 'racy' pictures off user's iPhone Sophia Ellison of Fairfax, Virgina, went into her local Best Buy and left her old iPhone with the Geek Squad in an effort to have photos, music and contacts transferred from the old device to her new 4S.
The employee, George, promised to wipe the old content from the phone and then offered to buy the old phone for $60. He did not give her a receipt and paid right from his wallet.

After a day, the transfer had not been done so Ellison called in and George called her back saying the photo retrieval would be done.

Supposedly, the already creepy situation took a turn for the worse. George called her back, said he had made a CD of the photos, and that she should drive by to pick it up from his house.

Ellison then contacted her lawyer. "I felt sick. I'm a woman. I love to model. I'm not a model, but I love to model. I have some pretty racy photos of myself, for me. Even the words 'Best Buy' gives me chills," says Ellison in a taped video.

There were about 900 pictures on the phone, including those of her kids and her grandfather who recently passed away.

Best Buy made a quick statement and fired the employee: "First and foremost, we apologize to this customer for an unfortunate experience caused by what appears to be rogue action against our code of conduct, specifically related to our trade-in program. We hope to restore her trust."

As much as it has occurred to just about everyone about how they can turn their advantageous situation into a way to meet someone........seriously............assuming she's willing to 'hook up' that quick, it should be know that the actions of this perv would creep ANYONE out. He deserves his time in the clink.

shes dumb enough not to back up her own stupid crapple

Sorry, no sympathy from me. You should never leave pictures you dont want others to see,on a phone. Much less when you ask them to transfer your pictures.

422.7.2012 22:19

He bought said broken phone, after getting word not everything was backed up, I guess he thought he would do her a solid and do a recovery at home. Just because you delete stuff does not mean it's gone, which is why if she had 900 pics he only got 300 back from recovery and the rest where really gone. What he should have done was told her all data is gone or got her to come into the store to pick it up, but I guess he didn't want to get into shit from buying the phone on the job. I guess he should not have broken store policy to buy a busted phone for cheap because this is where it gets you.

what a dumb edited by ddp he didn't even necessarily look at the photos he just had access to the files it doesn't mean he looked at them, she is just another dumb apple fan that doesn't understand technology, I feel bad for the employee this bitch deserves to loose her job!

I'm looking forwards to seeing her racy pics on 4chan.....Seriously though, what kind of idiot doesn't remove or erase the sensitive data from their phone BEFORE servicing????

No good deed goes unpunished.

823.7.2012 03:58

clearly, some of you didn't read the entire thing... she wants the guy to transfer the photos onto the new phone.

he shouldn't of taken it home first place he looked at them or not.

Perhaps, he could have started the copy, gone to do something else, when he came back, copy was complete, but he missed the picture, then when he is contacted by the women, he realise, and looks and finds the pictures, then he puts them on CD from her. All good deed, but then of course he may keep some etc or he may have looked at them, all these things might be true, but don't make him a creep.

there could have been many factors as to why the pictures where not taken off

I think you are ALL missing the point...

An IDIOT brings in their broken technology for it to be fixed. They give some song & dance, probably cry about it, say they need it done NOW, probably showed their ass while in the store... all serious offenses & breaches of social protocol in THEIR behavior while in the store, but none of that is said HERE. We don't get this guys side. Just the female. Remember, it's HER near naked ass on the camera, not his.

Now, he decides to go the 'extra mile' for whatever reason. Maybe he's like every other tech goon, she's pretty, she coerced him, you know how we can be manipulated (don't lie to yourself or in here either, you'll get smacked - HARD). He makes a shit decision & takes the thing home to work on it.

The events turn out to be what they are & again - SHE shows her ass. SHE is now impotent. SHE is screaming legal lottery. Did this guy screw up? Sure. And that's why we can't have customer service like we used to.

I run this risk every time I work on somebody's computer. I have a page of legalese that stipulates that if you stuff on your device that you don't want known about YOU BETTER GET IT OFF OF THERE! Including the immediate reporting of child pornography, child/animal abuse, terrorist activity, hate crimes to the authorities.

Granted, I don't go planting it on the web either... but some work can't be done without looking under the hood. So if they don't love it, they can shove it & take it some place else.

She can't take pictures of herself shaking her ass & then blame him for seeing them. That's like a female posing for Playboy & then suing them publishing the photos.

LordRuss, he purchased the phone from her and that is why he had it at home. He purchased the phone on the job, obviously the backup didn't go to plan and stuff was missed. He then is told she called back and is missing stuff. He does not want to get in shit for breaking the rules, feels bad for her and recovers the pics at home. Why would she think the phone would still be at Best Buy?

My point is (& I'm not looking to king pissant of Right Mountain here) we're still only getting one side of the story.

You're very right, he bought the phone, which he did in the store & is against store policy. If he's nerdy enough to do it on the low-low, & still do the work at home - he's still trying to treat her right. I.e., there's holes is HER story.

The phone was broken, BB would just tell her that its broke, give us $80 & go away. He wasn't going to treat her that way, so he went the extra mile (for whatever reason). Obviously he got 'some' info off the phone, but not everything as promised.

She probably showed her ass about that as well & then raised hell when it learned it was a bunch of her nudie shots.

What I'm saying here is, we've only got one story, her's. He ain't all that innocent, that's why BB has the rules that they do - to protect these guys/gals from acts of customer stupidity (if that's what is going on here).

I'm thinking he's a dumb kid taking a trip through hell for trying to do what he thought was the right thing. All we got here was the sensationalism end of the story & will probably never get his side. I'd almost bet if this story goes too wide this broad will probably get offers to pose nude.

Don't 'you' find it odd she mentions it "twice", one sentence after the other, that she likes to model - right to the press/media? Nah my friend, I've been around far too long to know bullshit when I've stepped in it.

I agree. He was being nice and she took it the wrong way. Like I said above, I think if he would have instead said come pick it up at the Best Buy instead of his home this stupid situation would not have happened. Now he is out of a job and she is digging for gold.

1423.7.2012 18:33

I'm not a tech geek, but the story says that she brought her phone to have old photos taken from one phone (old) and placed on her new one. It never said the old one was broken. The chick was stupid granted for picking up supposed cd from the geeks' house, but being technologically ignorant to the fact that her pictures would be able to be seen gave that guy no right to her pictures. His job as a best buy employee was to transfer the photos from one phone to the other, without looking at them. P.S. all that idiot had to do was his job and after seeing the photos if he still wanted them, then buy the phone and then he was in the clear. She has her photos, and so did he. Just watched the woman's story had just previously read the story. I stand partially corrected. If photos couldn't be saved with best buys equipment, how'd he get them at home?

So to some, all Best Buy/Geek Squad people are the same as the single employee who did this...just like some men who rape are proof that all men are rapists.

My thoughts exactly!

1724.7.2012 09:15

personally if i was transferring data i would have a look at what im transferring unless i was being paid lots of cash not to look at it.
if she didnt want the photos seen they shouldnt of been on the phone in the first place.
the guy may or may not of looked at the photos and he may or may not of made copies.
sounds like he went out of his way to give her the data back.

as for him buying the phone if she didnt want the phone and he had money to buy it i dont see a major problem but if it is against store policy he should of arranged something and done it outside of store trading hours and outside of the store.

if he broke code of conduct giving him a formal warning or firing him would of been the correct action.

1824.7.2012 13:38

The woman should have backed up her data i agree but unfortunately not everybody knows how to do this. Hell, she should've just went to the Apple store since she was having so much trouble, but this was completely ridiculous on both of their parts. He's out of a job now with a stain on his job profile, and she comes out smelling like a rose. Good grief!!

1924.7.2012 13:45

Yeah, I'm on the dudes side here. He BOUGHT the phone. It's his, data and all. That's what she gets for taking cash from the guy and not doing it by policy.

2024.7.2012 19:43

What he wanted a broken phone for is beyond me(unless he planned on backing up those pics already). However, Geek Squad is limited to what they are able to do in the store because of policy. They are only allowed to use "approved" software, however it's likely that he had plenty of software on his personal computer that would be capable of retrieving the data from her phone. So now this girl comes in with a sob story about how she needs to get this info off of her phone, but he ends up limited by the technology available. So she cries about losing her shit, so he goes out of his way and takes his own personal time to retrieve the photos for her, now he obviously can't give it back to her at Best Buy because he can lose his job over that. But she sees an opportunity to make a quick buck by a big deal about it, and will probably pursue a lawsuit. All he did was try to fix a problem for a sad customer. Now thanks to his good deed, he'll have trouble ever working near a computer again. Though there is always the chance that he did it with the intention of posting to 4chan... We'll never know because I doubt anyone will go out of their way to hear his side of the story.

2125.7.2012 07:38

the phone might of been an easily fixable minor problem.

i just searched google for images of sophia ellison and the only racy photo i found of her was on a facebook page with her name.may or may not be her.either way racy pics of her have not been made public.

edit: only reason i looked for pictures of her was out of curiosity to see if he uploaded any or not.

The most likely scenario, in my opinion, is this: She broke her phone, didn't have insurance through her provider, no Geek Squad Protection, and no Apple Care. So her phone is broken but she needed to get a new phone, but couldn't afford to pay the $700 price for a phone without a contract, so she would have to add an additional line to her account in order to get the subsidized price on the phone, but she probably didn't have the $100 or so for the new iphone. And she cried and bitched about it until George finally said fuck it I have $60 in my wallet I will buy your busted phone from you. That way she can get her new phone and he can get to the next customer and get the line moving. She wouldn't have been able to use the Best Buy trade-in policy because her phone was broken, and he wouldn't be able to admit that he bought the phone since he could lose his job. So when she tells him that her data isn't on her new phone he has to dig through the phone at home, otherwise he risks losing his job. And she's using her tears as a way to make a quick buck.

That sounds a bit right to me. Anyone that wants some racy pictures could do WAY better than her sorry pictures for much less effort. She probably has at least one screw lose and has a very high opinion of herself. I wouldn't go out of my way to look at a picture of her naked. She looks real boney to me.

You guys are missing the point. This advertising is free to get her name out in the public. This is cheaper than any job modeling she will ever get. Notice how she is smiling into the camera and then goes back to looking like the victim. 15 minutes of game if i ever saw it.

2828.7.2012 04:02

i had a guy at cash converters take my xbox home in 2006 when it was on hock to them.he even fixed the ms dashboard that was currupt.

as far as i know without google searching it the pics hasnt been leaked.

i was looking at a video on youtube the otherday and a tv show in usa took a computer to several places to have it repaired and the other thing wrong with it was they had unplugged a hard drive cable.geek squad said they found a virus on it and that the harddrive was broken and it was about $500 to replace the harddrive and $70 to remove the virus.

sorry for going a bit offtopic.

I would say, "I wish I'd get a $100 for each time I fixed a BB f*k up", but then wait! I have been paid between $40-100 each time for a BB f*k up, & saved customers multitudes of money.

Not because BB was at fault, but because a couple of idiots in BB (or a couple other local assholes) were unreputable. Like a bad auto mechanic, you should never go back, but to think you're going to make a scene & win the lottery? This idiotic skank is in for a surprise when she tries it again.

It's like suing the hammer because 'you' can't drive a nail straight.

3029.7.2012 03:56

if she sues BB they might give her an out of court settlement to shut her up.
if she sues the individual who lost his job she will probably get nothing.

i dont know mez, being an automotive mechanic ive seen some bad things happen, but it can usually be attributed to bad workmanship.yes there are guys out there with absolutely no conscience ,but after hearing what some computer "techs"tell people i still feel pretty good about my profession.lol

3330.7.2012 21:55

Maybe you are more savvy with computers. Not that all car mechanics will rip you off every time. Also they are way more apt to be much more honest if they think you know what they are doing.

3430.7.2012 22:05

yeah, every computer i break,i learn a little more.lol.despite 2oldgeeks saying,i think every once in awhile you have to take a chance and piss on the electric fence.i miss him on this site.

3530.7.2012 22:17

I was a tech at GoodYear and we always only wrote up what really needed to be done. Its funny how some people would doubt us so I always offered to take the client to the problem and show them. Then I would give them my best guess as to how long a failing part might last with no guarantees of course. The guy that managed the place was a real douche though. He would toss customer splash guards in the trash just to save a minute and get done faster. So I seen both sides.

3630.7.2012 23:49

There is far more temptation in smaller shops where the money goes into the owners pocket, especially if you need the money. The bigger places might be more honest but are more costly.

I might disagree with you a bit there. I'm about as small shop as you can get & by far the cheapest in this red necked haven (especially when I'll charge a guy $125 to back up his data, reinstall Windows & then put the data back?), I've got a LOT of enemies including BB. Not to mention I do better work than they do.

I just tell people Trust is a four letter word that starts with "U" in the middle of it. The instant you break that trust all bets are off. That goes for ANY business venture. So any asshole that can't deliver, he/she had best not be writing a check their little ass can't cash.

3831.7.2012 21:57

The one thing I will say is $125 is a lot of money when you can get some good free programes to back up your pc mac or linux syste even android or iphone even and it is so easy to do ant takes next to no time to do it. But on the other hand the bug shops are pushing the little guys around and that is not right. The thing that this person women never understood is how would you know that all the phone has been trasfered transferred to the new phone like duh you would have to look at it to see if it is all done. Another thing if he followed the company police he would nto have bought the phone and if he would have done the work in the store he would have called her and said im sorry we cant do any transfer because of the things on your phone and not bought it from her with his own money. I dont get people these days.

As for your analogy about $125 to free, well... you do it once for free & the next thing you know EVERYBODY will let you do it for free. Seems to me you haven't done 8-10 worth of work doing what I mentioned for basically $12-15 an hour.

Sure it sounds like a lot, until you realize you have to cover you r ass like like this poor bastard didn't. Then there is also the troubleshooting the ever present 'missing drivers' that are never included with these POS systems that these idiots want to 'run like new' or seem to think are going to run like the newest Alienware or liquid cooled ILM server farm nightmare.

Frankly, if it's so damned easy why isn't everybody doing it? And just cause it's free don't make it better either.

As for the rest of your analogy - it's a bit redundant. Best Buy is already known for returning devices back to their owners & NOT telling them a reason for why they couldn't get the information off of it. Or better still a really piss poor reason as to why they couldn't accomplish it. That's why these individuals come to people like ME & others who are willing to tackle the job.

Which leads to the myopic answer to your "not getting people these days"... Some people still want to help others, despite the damage they may incur to their own well being. Call it a for of wanting to be sainted or martyrdom if you will.

Not that you're this kind of individual, but someone who's wrapped up in their own little world of conceit & self worth wouldn't get it. People like this silly sack of exhibitionistic psychosis bitch is a prime example of the very person who will go to every public length to take all advantages & everyone to get all she "thinks" is owed/due her.

There's no cure for what this idiot has.

I agree. She is pissed because the pictures weren't on her phone anyway, not because he had her old phone, and potential access to them. I feel sorry for the guy, I don't think he did anything wrong (morally, he did break store policy). But, What is really stupid is she never would of even given it a second thought if they were on the new phone.

Hell, I have trouble keeping my phone from sending ever damn thing to my google account. If I lost my phone or it quit working and needed my "info" I have it in a half dozen other places.

I think my phone does back ups of back ups.... :D

I wouldn't put my phone into the hands of anyone!
My screen went bad and they swapped my phone for a different one and I was ticked that I didn't get to do the wipe myself.

How does someone own a phone today without having it backed up 15 ways to Sunday?

But on the other hand the bug shops are pushing the little guys around and that is not right. The thing that this person women never understood is how would you know that all the phone has been trasfered transferred to the new phone like duh you would have to look at it to see if it is all done. Another thing if he followed the company police he would nto have bought the phone and if he would have done the work in the store he would have called her and said im sorry we cant do any transfer because of the things on your phone and not bought it from her with his own money. I dont get people these days.
I have to disagree. Like LordRuss, I also repair computers. $125 for backing up your date, reinstalling the OS, and restoring your data is quite a bargain. You seem to think that the cost is for the act of repair. It's actually not. When you pay a technician, you don't pay them for pushing the button. You pay them for knowing *which* button to push.

It's a Scottish curse/blessing... the ability to tell stories. And those stories worth telling, are definitely worth stretching!

Or when all else fails, throw in a dick joke.
