Apple slashes some iTunes song previews to just 30 seconds, then returns some back to 90

Apple has restored the 90-second preview window on iTunes for most of its songs that had been (possibly accidentally) slashed to 30 seconds.
Two days ago, Apple had reduced the song preview time of many tracks (including newer hits) to 30 seconds down from the standard 90 seconds for any song that is longer than 2:30. Some of the tracks have had the time restored, but not all.

It was back in 2010 that Apple took the 30-second preview and extended it to 90 seconds.

Still unclear is why the change happened in the first place, and whether it is permanent.
