Meizu confirms new MX4 with Ubuntu Touch for this year

Canonical will launch its first commercial Ubuntu Touch-based phone in conjunction with partner Meizu later this year.
The Meizu MX4 will feature the Linux operating system, and should be released in December.

Meizu, Bq and Canonical announced the first Ubuntu Touch partnership back in February, but only gave a "Fall 2014" time frame for the first phone release. Canonical devs have been working on the RTM version of the software, but it still needs stability and performance tweaks before it can go live.

"Under the request of some fans that have contacted Canonical, they assured us that from December will be available on Ubuntu Touch Meizu MX4 with MediaTek SoC MT 6595 . Still no details regarding the variant "pro" of the device, which should be announced in the coming weeks , but we feel pretty confident in saying that the OS will be developed for it, with the timing probably a little more dilated," read the Google translation of Meizu's Italian blog.

The Meizu MX4 runs on an octa-core MediaTek MT6595 processor, has a 5.4-inch display, runs on Android 4.4.4 and has a 20.7MP camera, making it a high spec juggernaut that should easily run Ubuntu.

I'm glad they got this back on the shelf I was hoping we would see a Linux style Smart Phone. Competition is a good thing and I'll bet this is a nice Mobile OS version.

Can hardly wait to play with it!

those beveled edges worry me. Aren't they worried about getting sued by apple?

This is very nice to see. I'm curious as to whether the Play Store will be available without hacking, but the Amazon app store has really developed since its inception, so that's starting to become less of an issue. Depending on the price of it, this may end up being yet another chisel to chip away at the flagging Apple market share. I read an article about how Apple is afraid of Samsung the other day...as a proud and very happy OnePlus One user, I must say that the OPO is the one they should be fearing the most right now, but I'd like to see how this one factors into that as well.

My best guess would be that it wouldn't for a year or so but eventually would have all of the niceties that iOS, Andriod, and Windows 8 is becoming.

Remember when Andriod's first started, hardly any apps, widgets, or stores, the same goes for Windows 8, and now this Linux variant.

First comers will be frustrated but in time hopefully this phone will flourish as well.

I won't be a first adopter since I have a decent Smart phone, or as I call it Dumb Phone, but if I was in the market I'd think about giving it a run, dependent of price and plan.
