Canadian pirates will get notices from ISPs from January

Canadians who download and share musically illegally may end up getting notices from their Internet Service Providers due to a new law.
Up until now, Canadian ISPs had a choice of whether to notify a customer that had been identified by IP address for copyright infringement, but in January the system will change and become mandatory as the Copyright Modernization Act will take effect.

The ISP will not hand over personal details of the customer however, just act as an intermediary.

"So essentially a copyright holder will provide Sasktel with notification that an IP address has illegally downloaded some material...and then Sasktel is required to notify the customer with that IP address," said Michelle Englot, director of external communications at SaskTel.

Such communications are intended to deter users from continuing to infringe copyright and lead them to legal, licensed outlets instead.

All this nonsense as a result from pressure from the US and its companies like RIAA, MPAA, etc.

I live in the US......Chicago of all places; the most corrupt area in the world.

Why doesn't Canada just tell the US to go F THEMSELVES and manage their affairs accordingly on their own??

Pressure from within your own actors, movie, music guilds.Just like with our own here in NZ.I have yet to see proof of any of the claims made by the industries,to me its no different for any business theft & such like is all part of doing business you roughly factor in the cost to whatever it is your selling, even i get ripped off at times tho not often.

That's an interesting proposition.

But bear in mind that this new thing is only to be used as a deterrent. Its like having a speed trap on the highway that only takes pictures of your car and sends it to you without actually issuing a ticket. Its not a real deterrent.

IN CANADA A PORTION OF SELLS OF BLANK CD'S AND DVD'S IS GIVEN TO COPY WRITE OWNERS. THIS BEGAN ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO. THAT IS WHY THIS IS NOT A CRIMINAL CRIME, BUT A CIVIL MATTER IN CANADA. YOU CAN STILL BE SUED, BUT NEVER HAS THERE BEEN ONE. ROGERS HAS BEEN SENDING SUCH NOTES TO CUSTOMERS FOR YEARS. BEST ADVISE IS NOT TO REPLY TO MESSAGE AS IT IS A ADMISSION OF GUILT.

There have been surcharges on blank media in the USA as well (since 1998). Blank CD media specifically labelled to be for music use and standalone audio CD recorder hardware (and Sirius XM receiver devices with recording ability). For those who ever wondered why there were blank CDs said to be for music use, this is why...don't buy them if you don't want any money from purchasing them to go to the media companies.

Yeah i think you'll find the surcharge is universal, personally i think the practice is a crock

Using cd's for your music is weird in this day & age & what a pain they are to change in a cd player regardless if using a multi disc changer or not;jeez i even bought a vehicle cd player that had usb ports for the very same reason i didn't want to stuff around with cd's

*thinking aloud & rhetorical* > do house stereos now have usb ports

my mothers car has a 8 tray CD changer and no way to plug in a external device and its an 06, besides CD's Just sound better to me on a full blown stereo system. one day when flac support is more widespread maybe.

unless you count a small counter top Bose like device home stereo's then no i haven't seen one, then again most home stereo's since the 80's have Auxiliary Inputs, plugging in an external device like an iPod or CD Player is simple.
