Video: Microsoft's next browser is officially called Edge

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 29 Apr 2015 9:21 User comments (29)

Video: Microsoft's next browser is officially called Edge Microsoft's Internet Explorer successor, previously codenamed as 'Project Spartan,' is officially known now as Microsoft Edge.
The software giant announced the details earlier today at their annual BUILD conference and Edge will be the built-in browser for Windows 10 devices.

Outside of the light details Microsoft has revealed in the past few months, there was little else revealed today besides the name and a teaser trailer.

What we do know is that Edge has a built-in reader, sharing features and the ability to take notes; support for the voice-activated Cortana personal assistant; minimalist design; a new rendering engine called EdgeHTML; more simplicity in features and options; tab previews just from scrolling over them and the ability to draw (?) on the page.

Check out the trailer below:

Microsoft fails again. What would make Edge successful? That it works. Basically that it's a copy of Chrome like Firefox did. No weird stuff, no incompatible stuff no Microsofty stuff. Just that's it's compatible with all the new technologies and standards.

But no. Microsoft has to put in a bunch of stuff to annoy people and make it incompatible. What's the point of dropping the IE name if you're making the same mistakes? FAIL

So their taking away all of the nice features they did have to simplify it for dummies and adding more Windows 8 flat approach. I guess they haven't learned their lesson the last OS go around.

Spoken like the typical biased Mac user.

Another person who does not know the difference between there, their and they're. How are we supposed to believe anything you write when you misuse the English language? In this case and in your first sentence, you should have used the contraction they're not their. It would also help if you would specify the issues you have with the product, not just make a broad generalizatin about what they did or did not do.

What do you expect from 13 year olds?

630.4.2015 05:36

I hope this turns out to be good as I am sick of the crappy desktop browsers on offer at the moment.

I'm a Mac user and might be biased but I have to commend Microsoft for doing something new.
I think Edge looks good. I would try it if they make it a Cross-Platform Browser.
People like to put MS down but look at every other company out there that makes a browser with extra features that no one wants or it just confuses the browsing experience (FF and Opera comes to mind lol).
I know my comment will bring in a backlash but I don't mind. We're all entitled to opinions.

I think it's great that you are so open-minded and will try new things. No backlash from me for sure.

Get over yourself it was a typo just like this "generalizatin" moron.

So you're trolling for attention. Notwithstanding his small, innocent error, he still sounds more intelligent than you.

Get rid of the Adobe Flash and maybe you will have something !

Firefox didn't copy Chrome. Firefox came out 6 years before Chrome. If anything, Chrome was built using what features worked on Firefox.

In fact, Google hired several Firefox developers and they were part of the team that produced a prototype of what would be Chrome.

And we would not have Firefox if it weren't for Netscape. It all builds off of each other which is a good thing.

But please just learn a bit of the history behind the applications you use.

I have always found IE to be hard to use compared to FF or GC.
The controls for customizing anything were always un-user friendly, compared with the maligned FF and GC. I have avoided IE now for years even though it is built in. The Microsoft folks need to take a page from their competition. I don't need or want a built in reader, the ability to take notes or support for the voice-activated Cortana personal assistant. These all can be offered as add-ons like the competition dose. I have no use for these features and I think they make the browser larger and more complicated than need be. I admit that FF and GC have their own failings, and GC did not need to imbed Adobe Flash in it's structure but you can turn it off. Microsoft needs to look to FF or GC and make the new Edge much more user friendly and user setting much easier to understand and utilize. Anything else is a waste of time because all they will be doing is replaceing IE with IE re-named.

I, for one, stopped using IE long years ago. I use Google Chrome exclusively and I have done so since it became available! Having said that, I will still give Edge a look. We won't know for sure if MS has learned it's lesson until we try it for ourselves. I rarely listen to others comments concerning my choices. I do, however, remember likes and dislikes and compare them to mine. No one here seems to have any concerning Edge...only as it applies to IE, which simply isn't fair. So I'll wait and see for myself and go from there!

On another note...I seriously need to update my sig! Lol

Such a feminine response. You're trolling and breaking forum rules, you fairy.

IE9/10/11 are all OK, in fact in some cases they are still more compatible than FF or Chrome although Chrome keeps getting better and better. FF although greatly improved from 20 revs ago still remains slow and clunky, I use it on occasion but I would never rely on it as my goto browser. Chrome is only decent if you use an alternative, Iron or CoolNovo, which are much more configurable from the engine stance but now Chrome addons main site checks to see if it is true GC and tries to prevent you from Chrome addons if you have an alternate. You can get around this but you have to go to extremes to get the addon downloaded in order to use it in an alternative which not all are compatible unfortunately.

IE's engine has always been very controllable but without the option of the plugins like ABP, which you can now use, but it isn't as good as the FF or Chrome addons. If MS just added the Plugins feature they would be much better than the rest but this new Windows 8 flatness dumbed down, lack of control approach is a very bad direction to go and shows their frequent stupidity in their design approach which we've seen cycle over-and-over in their OS models over the decades.

On the other hand we as a society seem to be dumbing down so this new approach could be argued as a smart move my MS from those who subscribe to that, flip side of the coin.

A typo? Yea, OK. No, just an example of the Progressive take over of the Public education system. Kids are indoctrinated to rely on Big Gov.. Dumbing down the minds of the future with Communist Core, sorry, I meant Common Core. Those typos are a b1tch.

Why that person thinks I am trolling for attention I have no idea when the real attention getter is the one who misuses the English language. Thanks for your later reply supporting me in my disdain for the dumbing down of the English language. That type of error is so common on here it has become systemic and I see that particular one and the misuse of to, too and two AND the misuse of your just as common. Words like that do matter at least to me as the improper use of any one of them alters the meaning of the statement. I believe that those errors are an indication of a person's attention to detail and overall intelligence.

Did the moderators of AD just say "f*ck it, we quit"? I've seen more childish bickering and blatant insults here in the past two or three months than the past three years combined.
These comments remind me of a bathroom stall in a gas station. Why don't you kids use the "send private message" link instead of polluting these threads with your net-wars?

Seconded

Common Core, a state-based voluntary initiative, is "communist"..? Funny! Now please explain how "No Child Left Behind", a federal program, was oh-so-much better =p . Just don't try around a teacher, who is liable to smack you for being ignorant. Try googling the word "communist".

At least make some sense when you blither, please? It's hard to follow stream-of-consciousness silliness.

Anyway, with the bloat Mozilla has seen in the past few years, combined with the *many* ways Chrome annoys the piss out of me, any new attempts at making a good browser are welcome, whether or not they actually succeed.

By the way, folks, Chrome copied Firefox, pretty much. Everyone builds off of everyone else's work, get over it; that's how technology advances.

I personally use Pale Moon, anyhow. Gecko engine (same as FF), FF plugin compatibility, and half (or less) the RAM footprint =) . And casting aspersions at Opera is misguided, IMO; for lower-powered systems, it's a good alternative to FF/Pale Moon.

Edit -->

I haven't tried Pale Moon but will now, on occasion I use Sea Monkey which is another alternative of FF, it's very plain but performs better than FF in my opinion.

Like you I want to see more alternative Browsers or the for that matter the same goes for any other product line, competition is a good thing for sure.
