Tellabs Introduces Converged Transport System to Support Video and High-Speed Internet Worldwide

NAPERVILLE, Illinois, October 8 /PRNewswire/ --

- New optical product launch strengthens local market commitment

Tellabs strengthened its commitment to local markets by launching the
Tellabs(R) 7100 optical transport system (OTS) worldwide at the Broadband
World Forum Europe show in Berlin.

Growing global user demand for new services, personalization and more
choice challenges operators' networks. As users choose video on demand, HDTV,
business Ethernet and storage services, to name just a few trends, service
providers need to find solutions to scale these packet-based services
cost-effectively.

Lighter and lighter networks

"We are committed to helping operators solve the challenges they face in
delivering new services to users," said Dan Kelly, executive vice president,
product development for Tellabs. "The Tellabs 7100 OTS and the Tellabs(R)
7100 Nano(TM) OTS are our first truly global transport products, ensuring we
can meet the needs of operators anywhere in the world."

To compete successfully, service providers are looking at upgrading
existing transport networks with both Carrier Ethernet and next-generation
optical technologies such as ROADM (Re-configurable Optical Add/Drop
Multiplexer).

The Tellabs optical transport system integrates Carrier Ethernet and
ROADM to create a platform that economically lights the way to new converged
transport networks. The system comprises the compact new Tellabs 7100 Nano
OTS and the Tellabs 7100 OTS, both available with SDH capabilities in the
fourth quarter of 2007.

The capabilities of the system assure availability of next-generation
services, so users get reliable video and data at the speed of light. And
with new unified SDH/SONET and native Ethernet switching fabric and enhanced
Ethernet aggregation capabilities, service providers can deliver these
services even more cost-effectively.

The Tellabs 7100 OTS has gained acceptance in the United States via its
inclusion in Verizon's FiOS build out. The system is part of the solutions
Verizon uses to deliver advanced video, Internet and voice services directly
to homes. Also used by other leading U.S. service providers, now the Tellabs
7100 OTS is ready to serve carriers outside North America.

Core issues addressed at the network core

The Tellabs 7100 OTS integrates the latest in optical technology to
deliver all types of transport services -- ROADM, Carrier Ethernet, SAN,
video and SDH/SONET -- a benefit unique in the industry. Service providers
can buy fewer stand-alone Ethernet switches and MSPPs, thus lowering their
capital and maintenance expenses, be it at the core, regional, metro or
access parts of their networks.

Less is more

With video consuming 16 times more bandwidth than voice, service
providers not only need to add more bandwidth but they want to do so quickly,
with less time and expense. To address this market need, Tellabs also
introduces a new system where, for once, less is more. With the Tellabs 7100
Nano OTS, service providers can quickly deliver more bandwidth, with less
cost and complexity. The system packs the power of ROADM, MSPP and Ethernet
technology into a compact device, just half the size of comparable systems.

Big performance in a small package

A smaller system shrinks capital and operating costs. The Tellabs 7100
Nano OTS is so compact, it can reduce leasing costs in central offices and
data centers, where space is at a premium and one equipment bay can cost
hundreds of Euros a month. It also reduces time to revenue, since it can be
installed into existing racks in a matter of hours, rather than days. Service
providers can transform their traditional transport networks into a converged
Ethernet and optical transport network, preserving flexibility and
reliability while lowering costs. The system enables service providers to
scale up with network needs, using a pay-as-you-grow approach in both small
and large metro areas.

Depending on service-provider needs, both the Tellabs 7100 OTS and the
Tellabs 7100 Nano. OTS complement a range of Tellabs solutions such as the
Tellabs(R) AssuredEthernet(SM) solution, the Tellabs(R) IntegratedMobile(SM)
solution and the Tellabs(R) DynamicHome(SM) solution. For more information
