7/7 Survivors Join High Profile Speaker Line up at UK's First Terrorism Conference

OXFORD, England, July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In the turbulent wake of another terror campaign in the UK and
almost two years to the day since the now infamous 7/7 attacks on innocent
civilians in London, the organisers of Understanding Terrorism in the UK have
today announced a range of high profile speakers set to appear at what is
being hailed as the UK's first national conference aimed at bringing together
all the major organisations in the UK. The conference has been organised to
address the issue of understanding terrorism in the UK, believing that unless
we understand the problem it can not be addressed.

The two day invitation only conference is scheduled to take
place at the Oxford Belfry on 25th and 26th September later this year when
delegates will hear presentations from a variety of expert speakers and
analysts who will reflect the views of the law enforcement authorities,
economic institution, business sectors, academia, the Muslim community and
other interested groups.

Chaired by respected broadcaster and news journalist, Michael
Buerk, speakers will include; Dominic Grieve MP, Shadow Attorney General;
Muhammad Abdul Bari MBE, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain;
Lord Carlile of Berriew QC, the Government's independent reviewer of the
Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001; Tufyal Choudhury, lecturer at
Durham University and a leading international expert on human

Rights, integration and public policy issues relating to
Muslim communities; Rachel North, writer and 7/7 bombing survivor and the
BBC's Security Correspondent, Frank Gardner OBE.

"Despite being two years on from the 7th July bombings and
the huge attention that the attacks attracted, it is interesting to note how
relatively little we have learned from those dark days in 2005," says
conference organiser, John Casson.

"The spread of this kind of terrorism since 9/11 is very worrying,
especially as the recent incidents in Scotland demonstrate that the whole of
the UK is now a prime target. It is my personal belief as a citizen that we
need to talk about this subject and understand more if we are to stand any
chance of solving it", Casson continues.

"The new attacks in London and Glasgow reinforce the
seriousness of the situation we face today and the key objective above all
others is that this conference will provide those present with an even better
understanding of terrorism in the UK, and that they then share this
understanding with those organisations they represent and the sectors they
work within", says conference speaker Rachel North.

The organisers also hope that this event will help to get to
grips with the real reasons behind why some sections of the Muslim community
believe that we are experiencing increasing levels of radicalisation in this
country.

Casson believes there are many questions that need answers if
we are to make progress. "Is this movement led by economic, political or
religious desires? He asks. "Is there a major threat to the UK economy and
our way of life? Is a 'hearts and minds' approach towards understanding
disaffected groups better than 'stop and search'? Is the threat to the UK as
widespread and acute as the blanket media coverage suggests, and what are the
potential issues for UK business arising from terrorism in the UK?

"There are so many questions and yet we know so little about the subject
outside of what we are told by the government's civil contingencies
committee, COBRA, let alone how best to solve the issues", he concludes.
