online information 2007 or http://www.online-information.co.uk

Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia and Wikia, will open this year's Online
Information Conference (4-6 December, Olympia, London)

Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales the American internet entrepreneur is perhaps best
known as founder of Web 2.0 behemoth Wikipedia. This could be set to change
as he gets to work on his new venture, the search engine project 'Wikia
Search' which operates under the same principles of neutrality, openness and
participation key to all his online endeavours. In this interview the
self-confessed geek with a spirit of adventure reflects on his past success,
predicts the future of wikis and tells us how to get rich...

G: Are you ever surprised at the success of Wikipedia?

JW: I've always joked that I'm a pathologically optimistic person ...

G: Do you see it as a philanthropic venture in some ways?

JW: Oh yeah definitely ...

G: Where do you see Wikipedia in ten years?

JW: When I think about Wikipedia in ten years I mostly have been
focussing my attention on the growth of the languages of the developing
world...

G: What inspires you to keep developing new ideas like the search engine?

JW: For me I just like to do whatever seems like the most fun thing to
do...

G: Ok, so if you could have any other job in the world what would it be?

JW: That's a good question! [laughs] ...

G: We've heard you enjoy sailing- are there skills that translate from
sailing into business?

JW: Sure, yeah...

G: Do you ever contribute to Wikipedia and edit things a bit?

JW: I do a little bit...

G: What's the future of Web 2.0?

JW: I think we're just at the beginnings of seeing mass participation and
collaboration....

G: When are you next in England?

JW: I'll be in England speaking on December 4th- at the Online
Information Conference. I'll be talking about how the Web 2.0 movement is
growing- Wikipedia was just the start, then Wikia and all the Wikia
communities. I'll be talking by analogy about the important ideas of open
source, transparency and participation, and how those ideas apply to my
search engine project.

G: Finally, any tips for would-be entrepreneurs?

JW: First found a charity that becomes the number nine website on the
internet- it just makes starting a for-profit company a lot easier!
