Aptana Releases RadRails 1.0 for Aptana Studio(TM)

SAN MATEO, California, March 12 /PRNewswire/ --

- Delivers Feature Packed Open Source Eclipse-Based IDE for Ruby on Rails

Aptana Inc. today announced the long anticipated availability of RadRails
1.0 for Aptana Studio, the popular Eclipse-based IDE for Ajax and Web
developers who use scripting languages like Ruby, PHP, and JavaScript.
RadRails 1.0, the first major release of the RadRails software since Aptana
became home to the community project last year, provides unparalleled
features for Ruby on Rails developers. The free, open source download for
RadRails 1.0 can be found at http://www.aptana.com.

In contrast to other Rails development tools, RadRails blends the
powerful integrated development environment (IDE) features of Aptana Studio
and Eclipse with the under-the-hood access to the "Rails shell" console that
Rails aficionados love, RadRails 1.0 provides the "best of both worlds" for
Ruby on Rails developers. This makes RadRails great for beginners and
advanced users alike. Beginners can use the IDE features and configuration
wizards to get started quickly and easily. For advanced users, the
integration of both the shell's familiar command line interface and Aptana
Studio's renowned HTML, DOM, CSS, JavaScript authoring, and Ajax library
support delivers immediate productivity gains. "New users can learn commands
as they go and advanced users can use the shell directly," said Chris
Williams, Sr. Software Engineer at Aptana.

RadRails 1.0 further boosts developer productivity with additional
features. Automatic indexing of all code assets -- from the foundations of
the Ruby core, to all the libraries and gems used in your project, to your
own code as well -- lets developers see and navigate their code quickly and
easily in outline form. In addition to convenient type inference and code
completion when authoring with the IDE, RadRails for Aptana Studio provides
in-line access to available commands and arguments within the Ruby shell.
Such capabilities, typical of tooling for object oriented languages, have
historically been lacking for development with scripting languages. RadRails
1.0 for Aptana Studio fills that gap for the Ruby on Rails community.

"When I started using RadRails it was the only tool on the street that
knew and loved Rails and Ruby," said "Dr. Nic" Williams of Dr. Nic Academy,
who provides Ruby on Rails training and services. "Even though there are now
many IDEs that profess compatibility with Rails, Aptana/RadRails should still
be a go-to editor for Rails development."

RadRails 1.0 is a development plugin for Aptana Studio which itself can
run standalone or be plugged into the Eclipse IDE alongside all that Eclipse
has to offer. "[Since Aptana Studio is based on Eclipse,] I can [also] take
advantage of the vast number of Eclipse plugins like Mylyn, the Bazaar
plugin, GotoFile, QuantumDB, SQL Explorer, etc..." said Scott Bronson,
independent Web consultant in San Francisco.

For all users, RadRails 1.0 for Aptana Studio bundles the JRuby
interpreter directly with the download so as to deliver instant previews
directly in the IDE without the hassles of extra configuration and set up of
a Ruby on Rails environment. In addition to running any Ruby code, managing
gems, and doing the things a Ruby interpreter would do, JRuby also lets you
directly integrate with Java. Users who might prefer other Ruby interpreters
such as the standard MRI Ruby distribution, Rubinius or others can easily
configure RadRails 1.0 for Aptana Studio to use those. For those that really
want to go deep and create or extend Rails tooling, RadRails 1.0 enables
Eclipse itself to be scripted in Ruby via Eclipse Monkey, another open source
project to which Aptana has been a key contributor.

Aptana Studio also comes in a Pro edition. For USD $99 users get
additional productivity features across a host of scripting languages. For
Web development in general, Aptana Studio Pro adds SFTP, FTPS, a JSON editor,
remote project import wizards and more. For RadRails users, Aptana Studio Pro
provides a Ruby profiler that graphs what portions of code execute at what
speeds providing valuable insights to further optimization and performance
enhancements. Aptana Studio Pro users also get priority support and a direct
connection to nightly builds and betas with more useful features sooner and
accelerated access to bug fixes.

About Aptana Inc.

Aptana provides a leading infrastructure suite for Web site and Web
application developers who use scripting languages like JavaScript, Ruby on
Rails, and PHP. Aptana Studio, an Eclipse-based integrated development
environment for Web 2.0 sites and applications, has been downloaded by nearly
1,400,000 developers with more than 100,000 new users being added monthly.
Aptana is also the creator of Aptana Jaxer(TM), the world's first Ajax
server. Using the open source Aptana Jaxer server, developers can write
entire applications and presentation layers using Ajax, use server-side
JavaScript to generate or manipulate Web pages, directly interact with
databases, file systems and networks, and execute application logic on the
server -- what we call "End-to-End Ajax".
