World Expert Confirms Evidence for New 'Brain Workout'
OXFORD, England and LONDON, September 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A unique, computer-based 'brain workout', MindFit, launched today in the UK, is scientifically-proven to improve brain health and help guard against age-related decline, according to world expert, Baroness Susan Greenfield. Clinical trial data demonstrate that a regular workout with MindFit significantly increases a range of brain abilities, including short term memory and simple reaction time, otherwise known to deteriorate with age. With the brain training craze sweeping the UK, a new survey shows that nearly two thirds (58%) of people over 50 say they do crosswords, and one in five computer games, at least once a week to keep their brain active or stimulated. Even so, still one in five (22%) say that they have a 'senior moment' every day(1). Now, working out with MindFit can help beat those brain blanks. "You are your brain and it is vital your brain stays in the best possible working order", says Baroness Susan Greenfield, Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, The Institute for the Future of the Mind and MindWeavers Plc, the team bringing MindFit to the UK. "The ability and evidence for MindFit to improve brain function is powerful. For the first time with MindFit we have a cerebral challenge that goes beyond standard computer games because MindFit is proven to work in scientific trials", Baroness Greenfield continued. MindFit, created by brain health experts, is different from any other brain assessment or training exercise. Its technology assesses and trains a wide variety of skills in a systematic way, and fun exercises are tailored to an individual's changing needs. It is an exercise room for the brain with all the machines and a personal trainer - a total workout in the comfort of the home. The MindFit research, presented earlier this year at the Eighth International Conference of Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease, is the first double-blind clinical trial to show that computer-based training improves the brain functioning of the 50 plus population. The two-year clinical trial assigned 121 self-referred volunteer participants, 50 years and over to use either MindFit or a variety of popular computer games that can exercise important cognitive skills. MindFit users experienced significantly greater improvement than the others, and in a variety of domains such as short term memory (15% improvement) and simple reaction time (19% improvement).(2) MindFit is licensed in the UK by MindWeavers Plc through collaboration with the makers CogniFit Ltd. MindWeavers, established in 2000 from within Oxford University, produces innovative software that alters brain function. MindWeavers' Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bruce Robinson, said: "MindFit raises the seriousness of the brain training craze and takes it to the next level. It is fun to use and proven by science to keep the mind fit - a product that advances the 'computer games' arena. We are delighted that we can now make it widely available in the UK, both directly and through distribution partners." Concluding, Baroness Greenfield continued: "My absolute passion for discovering evidence-based software to offset cognitive decline led to my involvement in MindWeavers. Having founded the company, BrainBoost, in 2002, it transpired that MindWeavers' ambitions in neuro-development were in complete alignment with my own. As a result BrainBoost joined forces with MindWeavers and we are delighted that we can now make MindFit available in the UK. As a population we are increasingly conscious of the benefits of physical exercise to our health. Our challenge is now to increase the amount of time spent on evidence-based methods of brain exercise to enhance the benefits that physical exercise may already offer to brain health". The Company's innovative software products can maintain brain health in older people, protecting against age-related mental decline and dramatically improve children's language learning abilities. The science behind MindWeavers is led by two of the world's foremost neuroscientists: Professor David Moore, an expert in auditory neuroscience, brain function and learning, and Baroness Susan Greenfield, Britain's top brain scientist and expert on the human mind, who is a world expert in neuro-development and degeneration. The Company was founded by Professor Moore in 2000, following his discovery that many children with language impairments had problems in perceiving simple sounds which affected their speaking, reading and writing abilities. MindWeavers first product, Phonomena, trains children to distinguish between word sounds, and automatically adjusts to each child's level, keeping them working at their 'edge of competence' - the level at which Professor Moore's research has shown that learning increases dramatically. MindWeavers moved into the 'brain exercise' and brain health market with the acquisition of BrainBoost and is currently launching a series of innovative brain exercise products for the baby boomer market, as well as trialling brain health products which aim to protect people who have been diagnosed with early cognitive decline. Investors in MindWeavers include the University of Oxford, business angels and Oxford Innovation Ltd. For further information: http://www.mindweavers.co.uk
