"Mega Monday": Online Sales up but Revenue Down for 2,000 Retailers
KEIGHLEY, England, December 10 /PRNewswire/ -- A customer reward website that monitors purchases from more than 2,000 mainstream UK retailers to 550,000 shoppers, has revealed online revenue actually went down during Mega Monday. Monday this week (8th Dec) was pitched to be the busiest shopping day on the internet. Cashback shopping website http://www.eDealsUK.com has revealed that the number of purchases were up 11 per cent compared to the previous Monday. But the amount of money spent was actually down 7.5 per cent. And it predicts the really busy day will be this coming Monday (15th Dec). Marketing manager Nadeem Azam said: "Consumers are seeing big sales everywhere, and are confident online retailers will produce better and better deals the closer we get to Christmas. "So this is encouraging them to leave their online Christmas shopping later than ever this year. "We also know that consumers now have so much confidence that online stores will deliver on time, they are prepared to take the risk of ordering online as late as the 22nd December." With eDealsUK.com, customers log into the cashback site before visiting any of 2,000 mainstream retailers and buying goods and services as normal. A portion of the referral fee paid by online retailers is returned to the consumer - perfect for Britons hit by the downturn. It means that eDealsUK.com has access to more UK online sales information than any single retailer. The site is part of a network of 180 sites operated by V A C Media, the biggest operator of customer loyalty websites in the UK. More than 550,000 shoppers use the network to purchase items from 2,000 retailers. Year on year comparison of performance in 2007 and 2008 showed the number of sign ups went up 12 per cent in 2008.
