Recession Status Drives Fastest Growth in Cashback Shopping for 5 Years

LEEDS, England, February 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The official declaration that Britain had entered recession just over a
week ago has driven a remarkable surge in people joining a UK cashback
shopping website.

The http://www.eDealsUK.com network has seen membership figures grow by 9
per cent since the announcement on Friday 23rd January.

It now has 600,000 members across its network of 200 sites, buying from
2,000 retailers.

And each day is currently bringing increased growth in membership sign
ups.

With eDealsUK.com and its sister sites, customers log into the cashback
site before visiting any of 2,000 mainstream retailers and buying goods and
services as normal.

A portion of the referral fee paid by online retailers is returned to the
consumer - this is the cashback.

Marketing manager Nadeem Azam said: "While we have enjoyed steady growth
of about 12 per cent in the last two years, we have never seen anything like
this.

"The credit crunch and general downturn has been very good for cashback
sites, but it's almost as if people have heard that recession is official and
have immediately done what they can to cut costs."

Nadeem added: "Once people discover cashback shopping they become hooked.
But it's estimated there are still 20 million people in the UK who don't use
it.

"We think potentially millions could sign up in 2009, making it the year
of cashback shopping."

Because it can monitor purchases from more than 2,000 retailers,
eDealsUK.com has access to more UK online sales information than any single
retailer.

The site is part of a network of 200 sites operated by V A C Media, the
biggest operator of customer loyalty websites in the UK.
