California Micro Devices Introduces New Praetorian III(R) EMI Filter Family for Multimedia Wireless Handsets

MILPITAS, California, March 3 /PRNewswire/ --

- 3rd Generation Groundbreaking EMI Filter Technology Offers Excellent
Signal Integrity and Superior EMI Filtering

California Micro Devices (Nasdaq: CAMD) today announced the CM1693 family
of advanced EMI (electromagnetic interference) filters based upon the
company's Praetorian III LC based filtering technology. The CM1693 is the
first device to meet exacting EMI filter and ESD (electrostatic discharge)
protection requirements while offering the low line capacitance necessary for
the increasingly higher speed data interfaces to the high resolution cameras
and displays used in today's most popular feature and smart phone models. The
CM1693 also provides superior attenuation in the 700 MHz band, making it the
optimal solution for handset designs based upon 4G LTE based processors.

Praetorian III Technology

The CM1693 is a low pass EMI filter that features a unique coupled
inductor design architecture based on CMD's Praetorian III technology.
Praetorian III products offer higher performance than Praetorian I products,
at lower cost equivalent to the recently introduced Praetorian II family of
products. Praetorian III filter designs employ higher levels of inductance
and lower levels of capacitance to deliver industry leading EMI suppression,
excellent signal integrity and robust ESD production in a space efficient,
single chip solution.

Application Requirements for Feature and Smart Phones

Smart phone adoption is outpacing the growth rate of the overall wireless
handset market. The typical smart phone feature set includes high resolution
user interfaces such as cameras and displays, and high capacity removable
memory modules for data-rich multimedia applications. Inductor based LC
solutions like the CM1693 are ideal for EMI filtering and protecting high
speed parallel data interfaces in applications where digital signal integrity
is critical, such as high megapixel cameras, high density removable memory
modules, and high resolution displays.

Main Features

Key performance attributes of the CM1693's scalable pi-filter topology
include:

- Typical roll off frequencies of 300 MHz
    - Broad stop band starting in 700 MHz band up to 6 GHz
    - High levels of attenuation and robust ESD protection up to plus or
minus 18kV contact discharge, consistent with the IEC 61000-4-2 level 2
      standard
    - Superior signal integrity with rise and fall times less than 4ns
    - Minimal insertion loss (<1.5dB)

Maximum Layout and Placement Flexibility

The CM1693 family includes two industry standard package configurations
to permit maximum layout and placement flexibility to wireless handset
designers. The table below shows the channel configuration options with their
respective dimensions. They are offered in compact, low profile (0.5mm tall),
uDFN packages.

CM1693 Product Family Summary

    Product Number of Channels Package Dimensions (L X W X H)

    CM1693-04DE 4 uDFN, 1.70mm (L) x 1.35mm
                                         (W) x 0.50mm (H), 0.40mm pitch

    CM1693-08DE 8 uDFN, 3.30mm (L) x 1.35mm
                                         (W) x 0.50mm (H), 0.40mm pitch

Pricing and Availability

The CM1693-04DE, and CM1693-08DE, all RoHS compliant, are currently
sampling, and will go into mass production in 2nd quarter 2009. They are
priced between US$0.10 and US$0.20 each at 1,000 units depending on channel
configuration.
