AutoPatcher is an excellent alternative to windows updates, however it was taken offline in July 2007!
An alternative to recieve updates s to log onto microsofts windows update catalog and download the updates manually and install them hassle free. It takes time but well worth the effort.

When I first discovered Trojan Remover I was very impressed. Since 2003 there have been several improvemets incorporated into this wonderful utility. The licensing fee is trifling for unlimited updates for the life of the product. Trojan Remover has been there for me on more than one occasion. Some of the ways I have discovered this utility operates.
