I used this software for a year or more before I bought a DVD burner I was able to back up many many of my movies to VCD, you who have had problems are doin' somethin wrong.
Check out Sefies guides they are great.
Basically you Rip, Frameserve, encode and burn.
Yes the encoding is dependant on your CPU and as such with an AMD 2.6 takes around 1.5 hours, with a Celeron 900 around 6 hours, I know I have used both.
