GSpot is a nice little tool that allows you to see what audio and video codecs the video file uses in order to determine what you need to install on your system to watch it.

This does the job.
didnt like at all the fact that the program after closing it never terminaties, but stays running in the background using 50% cpu and a lot of memory
(just found out by starting task manager)
