OS extensions
Operating System Extensions are often quite essential and large enhancement packages to the core operating system.
Most commonly installed extensions are probably Java Runtime Environment and DirectX Runtime Environment extensions to Windows. These two examples probably give an idea what an "extension" in this category means -- large packages that change, alter or enhance operating system's behaviour quite dramatically.
