FFDSHOW rev. 2020 (20080622)

This is an old version of this software. You can also download rev. 610 (20061201) (latest stable version) or rev. 2180 (20081004) (latest beta version).

FFDSHOW is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing several video formats, including DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movies.

Filter also supports nowadays decoding of virtually all audio formats used in movies, including AC3, DTS, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis, and several subtitle formats.

Codec also features postprocessing capabilities, support for virtually all MPEG-4 video formats, support for various processor enhancements (such as SSE and MMX), etc. FFDSHOW is released as an open source software under GPL license agreement.

To summarize its main idea, the FFDSHOW consumes way less CPU power than original DivX or XviD codecs, even with maximum post-processing. At the same time the post-processing seems to give excellent quality results and allows more configuring than the original DivX codec. It can even automaticly reduce post-processing if your CPU is getting overloaded. The noise filter adds a kind of a rasterising effect to the picture - might be useful in some cases.

After our reviewers tried FFDSHOW they removed the DivX codecs from their PCs and never looked back.

FFDSHOW requires Microsoft Visual C++ to work.

Please note! Some Antivirus software claims that FFDSHOW contains a trojan. However our own tests indicate that this is a False Positive

We also recommend that you read through our guide on how to install and configure FFDSHOW.

I've been using these "nightly builds" for several years now and without this, my HTPC would be a far inferior beast for all it's processing and graphical power. Read ALL the information you can find on this software and suitable settings (for example, www.team-mediaportal.com forums), read it again, then install it, set it up, and enjoy vastly superior images, especially on large HD1080p screens. Or, keep using 'one setting suits all' products from your regular over-priced vendors.

It did take me a while to work everything out, but I can now take a fresh install and customise it appropriately in 2 mins, so it's not difficult, but I will admit that I couldn't have done this with any degree of certainty until I actually researched the software.

However, When you buy a car, do you expect the Owners Manual to tell you EVERYTHING about the vehicle, or do you rely on third party manuals, expert mechanics and home-trained motoring geeks? Same with this - let the developers do the good stuff designing the beastie, and let the geeks have fun breaking it, working out what works for them (the developers might not even know this!) and then publishing their findings online.

Seriously good results - my wife even commented on it...

I think I said it before, but the best builds so far come from msvc 2003. Was able to fix playback of a movie that seemed to have delay problems with when I got it.

And there has only been 3 official betas, the rest simply nightly builds pretty much.

Yeah, of course there will be beta versions, but FFDSHOW has been this way for a long time, and there's rarely any change log made available.

For all you guys mewling and pewking as Shakespeare would say ... In order to improve software, beta versions and voluntary bug reports are necessary. New versions mean new solutions and new functionality.
