For those interested: This program works in Ubuntu Linux Version 8.04 'Hardy Heron' under the Wine program installation. For the discs it will not work with, such as some Sony discs, you can use DVDFab HD Decrypter (the free version) also under Wine to copy the disc. This free version of DVDFab will not shrink the program so, if the disc is larger than 4.472 GB, you can shrink the resultant VIDEO_TS file with this program - DVD Shrink. The whole process is very smooth, very easy, and results in very good-looking disc copies. It is an almost ideal way for Ubuntu Linux users to back up their DVD library with programs that offer Microsoft Windows familiarity.

Hmmmm... Been using DVDDecrypter on my VISTA Machine for a few months now. Only issues I have with it on Vista is when it tries to play the movie after it completes the task. That part just won't work with Vista. As far as everything else is concerned, DVDDecrypter does a great job on Vista and is VERY FAST too! Just checked (again) and saw that, yes, you can still download the most recent version of DVDDecrypter and it works just fine. Some of you should research a little more before you post.

Great program, If you have a movie that simply won't shrink down far enough to fit on a 4.7GB disk, there is a way around. Shrink and make the .iso file ignoring the programs warning that it won't fit on the DVD. Mount the .iso image that DVD shrink just made on a virtual drive,such as Nero or Daemon tools virtual drive. Choose the virtual drive as the new DVD to shrink, and reshrink it. Of course you will need to place the output for this file somewhere else, or rename it so there' conflict.

I've been using it since day one! I have used it with win2k,xp, and vista and have never experienced any issues. For those that aren't aware, some movies will not work. Especially the one's coming out of Sony pictures. However...get ripit4me along with decrypter and this gem....and you're set.

I have been using this for about a year now and have had no problems whatsoever. I used to have it on an XP computer, but i bought a new laptop with Vista home premium and it works perfectly. Cant understand why it doesnt work for some people on vista as mine works fine? Great product though, easy to use, good picture! Well worth what i paid!

I have enjoyed using Dvdshrink. It was easy to use until I purchased a new computer. Dvdshrink does not work with Vista :( Is there any update or other programs that will work just as well?

I have three children under the age of eight years old, so backing up DVDs is a must in our house hold. My three tools of choice to create backups of the children's movies we own are: 1. SlySoft AnyDVD 2. DVDecrypter (no longer available for download) 3. DVD Shrink When combined with the latest version of AnyDVD, DVD Shrink is simply amazing--it is simple to use and is gets the job done quite well. The only times when DVD Shrink will not work for me are when a)the movie I am trying to backup is too big/long to be compressed into 4.38GB DVDs, b)when latest backup deterrents scheme has been used on the DVD I'm trying to backup (however, once AnyDVD releases its latest update, it is all good again!), and c)when the DVD I'm trying to backup is too scratched to be read reliably. I really like DVD Shrink, I has saved quite a little bit of many by not having to re-buy movies for the kids, thus I give it an Excellent! vote. PEACE!

it worked until it stopped then i had to go in and find where it stopped by playing with the frames. do not know if it'll burn to a dvd blank cd. I just wanted to convert it for ipod and zune. Just found out about decripter. I am lost and I had it up to here with this stuff.

DVDShrink has been reliable for years; and it works with Vista too. Even though it hasn't been (and won't be) updated since 3.2.0.15, it still performs nicely. Use it with DVD Decrypter.

Ummm, the fact that the file's called dvdshrink32setup1.ZIP should be a pretty big clue... Excellent software, works well in conjunction with DVDFab HD Decrypter and MenuShrink!

I wanted to say, I have a DVD made in 2005 I couldn't copy with any software burning program to include the Free Download SLYSOFT CLONE DVD Program with their RIPPER AnyDVD. I also used DVD43, my Primary Ripper with Roxio Easy Media Creator 9.0 and 7.5 my Primary Burn Programs. I even went to my WAYBACK Machine and tried using DVD X Copy Platinum made by 123 Studios. NADA !!!!!! None of the above worked. I got error readings for all the software burn programs to include, DVD Decrypter. Fortunately, I was able to go to my C:Drive to obtain the Video_TS Files. Slysoft AnyDVD Ripper informed me it could be a defective disk, or I needed a Patch for my DVD Drive and it gave me a list of drive manufacturers that had problems with this type of error. It provided a patch for the drivers. It wasn't this problem. I think the DVD was a Poorly Made DVD. It wasn't a Mayor Hollywood Release. It would be classified as a very low budget DVD Release. I've never had a Disk I couldn't copy with these programs. The only Program that would allow me to copy the Disk was DVD Decryter which I made a Video_TS File. Which I am going to use DVD Shrink to transfer my Video_TS Files to Disk with Roxio Easy Media Creator. cdawn, is correct SlySoft AnyDVD is one of the few programs where software is continually updated. I have a friend that uses Slysoft AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 Religiously and swear by.

DVD Shrink is a great program. One think that some of you need to do when encountering encryption problems. Is to run a decryption program first. I usually copy the VIDEO_TS folder on to my hard drive and then run DVD Shrink. Doing this well remove the first encryption and all well work fine after that. I have not had any problems. wj39. Did you make an ISO or did you make DVD files. Because I burned an ISO to a disc once and it would not work on my DVD player that is connected to my TV. It would only work on my computer. I would suggest to stay away from burning ISO movie files if you want to see it on your regular DVD player.

There is one thing you need to understand with DVD Shrink - it is a great program for a free program. However, it is no longer updated for legal reasons, so it cannot break the newer codes that distributors have placed on DVDs. If you would like to be able to use this software to copy new disks and make them compatible to you DVD players you should also install Slyfox. This software is continually updated and will break any code on any DVD...I have never ran into one it did not work on. This breaks the code, then DVD Shrink compresses it and then Nero burns it...works like a charm every time!

So far i have been using this program for a while as well. ANd so far it has been working well. until yesterday. i tried making a backup of one of my dvd's and it will play on some of my dvd players but others it won't. the disc i made plays in my pc and in my ps2 but and in my stand alone dvd recorder but it won't play in 2 of my stand alone dvd players. It is the weirdest thing i have ever seen in my life. And i have tried alot of different brand of dvd+r's and dvd-r's too. Same results... DVD shrink does it's job without any errors (most of the time)along with nero but the results are as i descibed above. Any ideas what the problem can be? (i'm new this site!!)

Excellent program. However I have encountered a problem with latest DVDs. When opening disc I get a mesage box which says. "DVD Shrink encouneered an error and cannot continue. Programmimg error - exception occured" Does this mean that the distributors have devised a system to beat DVD shrink? If so any sign of a counter to overcome this?

this software is excellent.i have been using it for a year now with no problems except in the past month.they have caught onto us. every movie out from lionsgate films has an encryption that shrink cannot break. if you try it says invalid dvd navigation structure.hopefully they will have a fix soon for this.also if the program displays a message saying dvd cyclic error it means that there is a scratch on the disk and you will have to try and fix or obtain a new copy.

Ok...here is my problem which I havent encountered yet. I recently copied a season of a tv series and all the discs required that I use RipIt4Me before I could use DVD Shrink. I even used the FixVTS program. Now...all those discs worked when I was done...except the last disc. It would pause, then skip scenes and freeze. So I tried to think what could cause this. So I cleaned my DVD player and tried it again. Same thing. So I popped in the disc before that which is on the same kind of disc and it worked fine. So I took the malfunctioning disc and popped it into the computer...it played fine. So I used DVD shrink and "ripped it" again. I put new disc in to burn it...copied and put it in my DVD player. Still didnt work. So I tried another type of disc. Still didnt work. After that I tried a 3rd kind of disc...the first was Sony, the second was Memorex and the last was Maxell. This time I watched the progress of the burn. It was fine until it got to 85% to 86% done and it was just sit there...and after about 30 seconds or so it would finally move on. I tried that one and it didnt work. I then tried burn a different movie and that worked just fine. So I went back and tried the FixVTS again...then tried to burn...and it still got stuck briefly at 86%. Any ideas on whats going on?? Thanks

FER GODSAKES, UPDATE DVD SHRINK ALREADY ! Well dvd shrink is perfectly adequate, you will occaisionally need another ripper that is better equipped (and updated periodically) for the newer or better encrypted movies. I like dvd shrink just fine as it is free, after all and who is gonna sneeze at "free". But....I also have DVDfab demo "just in case" which is a far superior product and even gets updated regularly ,whereas Anydvd kind of just got set adrift in the free progy world to fend for itself and thusly our of date.

Ok...I tried to Re-Author Gridiron Gang. I left out the files that had (Continue) next to them and I burned it. Well...I tried to play it and there was no way to select it to play or anything. The Menu came up and the image...but there was no way to select anything. Help!!

Got a problem. I recently made a copy of Gridiron Gang. As far as I could tell everything went smoothly. However when I put my copy of the movie into the DVD player to watch it, the DVD just kept looping the PG-13 graphic, the FBI Warning, the warning screen on the red background, and the "Following interviews..." screen. When I clicked the menu button, it brought up the menu and I hit play movie and it went back to looping those previous screens. So I put the disc in the computer, and the movie is on the disc...I found the files...but for whatever reason...it just loops those screens and wont play the movie...any ideas??

I too have had a few issues with DVD Shrink. However, I have gotten around them with RipIt4Me. I dont think I have had any movies not work unless they are scratched real bad. One concern I have is: My DVD Shrink no longer works with any burning programs. It used to work with Nero. I would put the movie in one DVD drive and a Blank DVD in the other drive...and in about an hour...boom...I had a movie. But all of a sudden, it would burn the movies to 75% or so and then just stop. I ended up with a bunch of coasters. Now I have to do this manually. I let it rip the movie then I open Nero myself and let it burn. Any ideas why this has happened? Thanks

DVD Shrink was no longer king of back up movies due to new copy protection come out and they did not have any update since v3.2.0.15..i have been switch to clonedvd 4, i have been test it's work on every latest release dvd so far..unfortunately it's not for free cost around $40usd

I didn't say the software was excellent because the decryption software doesn't work with the newer copy protections. However, there are enough freeware programs, i.e. RipIt4Me, that take care of that issue. Overall it's a very good program for editing and transcoding with more options than most users realize. Plus, the price is hard to beat (free). ;)

If having troubles use DVD decrypter to rip then shrink files with DVD shrink. This usually clears most issues. Never had a problem using these to in conjunction.

This software is absolutely excellent. I have never received a single error in all the months that I have used it. Not only that, the compression quality is usually great and it has no trouble at all bypassing all the safeguards on dvd's that are supposed to prevent ripping. Overall the software does exactly what it's supposed to and does it well.

Ok...so I have DVDShrink, AnyDVD, and FixVTS. I recently tried a movie and none of these programs worked on it. The error I got from DVD Shrink is: DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid DVD navigation structure. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. What can I use to get around it?? A great program. I've used it together with AnyDVD to rip (as of yet) any DVD I've come across. As for the 3.2.0.15 vs. DVDShrink 2007 question. These both are one and the same. For anyone that still is in doubt this is from DVDShrinks homepage: "We've been told some other sites/domains begin to sell/ask for donations for DVDShrink. They even rename the latest official version (3.2.0.15) to other names like DVDShrink 2007."

I like to ask if anyone has recently downloaded the new DVD Shrink 2007? I have been using v3.2.0.15 yet I just loaded CA Internet Protection Suite 2007 and it slowes down the encoding time using v3.2.0.15. I know it cost for the new DVD Shrink 2007 upgrade. Any opinions out there on this?

I had a similar problem months ago after downloading an update for nero, DVD shrink just refused to work. The solution I was given at the time was to revert back to the previous Nero update (6.6.0.18). I have stuck with it and all seems to be OK, however if anyone now knows of more recent updates to Nero that allow DVD shrink to work with no problems then please let me know.

Works great on my main computer but on my other computers I can not get the DVD drive to appear. I have Nero 6 installed and I have successfully burned discs using this software so I know it works. I can not seem to find any info on this.

The important question is: Can we use this to rip and re-author WITHOUT RECOMPRESSING? Even if that means copying a dual-layer disc to two single-layer blanks. So far it seems that every app assumes you want to recompress and wind up with crap.

The recent problems with DVD Shrink come from Disney (and its associated studios like Buena Vista, Miramax etc.) adding another layer of copy protection which prevents Shrink from analysing the discs content. To get around it use DVD Decrypter, RIPIT4ME and FFixVTS (all are freeware and come with 'idiot'-proof manuals). Just tried it out with Pirates: Dead Man's Chest and works perfectly.

This program is awesome, I would recommend it to ANYONE who has to back up their DVD's. Also, being able to back up dual layer disks on single layer ones is great, not to mention it saves money.

I have had a lot of success with DVDShrink. However on a couple movies, it doesnt work. So I clean the disc and try again. There doesnt appear to be any scratches on the discs. I also have AnyDVD too. Anyway, I was able to just copy the files from the DVD to my harddrive which as we know takes up 7+ gigs. I tried to shrink them from there but it gives me an error: DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Programming error - exception occurred. Anyone know how to get around this?

Get AnyDVD you can get that and DvdClone for somewhere aroung 30 us dollars and AnyDvd is updated just about every day, well worth the investment i have NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. and you can use the dvdclone to "SEE" where you want the recording to start and stop. I have been using this product for a few years and always had success. Recently I have been getting numerous errors when trying to copy new dvds that I rented from the store. Any suggestions on copying new DVDs? Is there another software I might be able to use? The older dvds seem to copy great. Most of the errors I get are during the writing phase on the blank dvd. Any help would be great. Darren

Only problem I have been having is the audio tracks are not coming out onto my burns. Picture is fine, but main audio isn't present, just background noise or music. Been using for years, not sure what my problem is, but its frustrating, as I havent done anything different than what I usually do.

Top software, i have been using it for years, and it has only let me down once with the DaVinci Code. There is something strange about that dvd! In answer to the question from REDCRX, no this software cannot shrink a dvd down to 700MB to burn to a CD. If you want to do this, there are several methods, depending on how you intend to play back the end product. I wont go into every detail here because it will fill the whole page, and you will find it all in the guides section anyway. The first step, riping the DVD to your Hard disk is common to any method, but due to changes in the Finnish Copyright Laws i think all references to this may have been removed from the guides, and also the best software, DVD Decrypter has gone. Basically this means you will need to use DVD Shrink to get the movie off the disk and remove the copy protection. If you want to watch your content on a standard dvd player you need to create a VCD or SVCD. see guides for converting DVD to VCD. If you want to watch your content on a PC you will get the best quality out of an MPEG4 codec like DivX or Xvid. You could also watch this on MPEG4 capable DVD players. see guides for converting DVD to MPEG4. However, compressing down to 700MB is going to give fairly mediocre results, i used to do it before i got a DVD burner, and will take a good few hours of processing time, and multiple pieces of software. If you can i would suggest investing �20 (or $35) in a dvd burner, and go ahead and use DVD Shrink.

Absolutely brilliant piece of Freeware, probably the best DVD compressing/encoding program on the market. Better than all the pay-for programs all put together, had very little to no problems with it, except it can be quite "touchy" on what it reads, for example; if the disc has a slight scratch or blemish, DVD Shrink will encounter an error. This programme has been used for many years with me and i say the only dvd that i have not been able to copy is King Kong. It is a shame that it cant copy it but without a doubt this is the best dvd copying software on the market

dvd shrink or nero recode is the only way to go..... if you can't afford nero, i'd stick with shrink. most of the other apps are inferior. with anydvd in the background. your backup copy is ready to go. dvd shrink,dated, yet i believe it's still one of the best!

I've tried DVD x COPY, and many others the last few years. DVD X Copy was by far the easiest but it has become obsolete. I like DVD Shrink and DVDFab. I just wish DVD Shrink was a easier to reauthor. Or an I missing something.

the only reason I am not putting an excellent as the vote is because there is one dvd i am trying to "back up" for my brother, but it won't let me! it is chicken little. I have used three different computers! everything goes fine w/ the analyzing, then I go to re-author and everything goes fine there also...the only problem I have is when I try to put it as an IFO file so i can put it into dvd decrypter afterwards...it says my I/O file is wrong or there is an error in it...can someone tell me what that means and how i can fix it? thanks so much for your help

As A newbie to burning, I have found out their are three things I can't live without. 1.DvdFabDecrypter 2.DvdShrink and 3. This Afterdawn Forum, I have learned pretty much everything that I needed to know to get started. I use DvdShrink with Nero to burn and have had only one coaster,that was a dl dvd-r and I had to update my firmware in order to burn the dl's. Best of all is all this software was free thru the internet. I have backed up several dvd's and couldn't do it without DvdShrink. It's nice to be able to copy a movie on one Dvd5.

If you couple this program with a program like ANYDVD there is absolutely NOTHING you cannont copy. If you don't have this program in your dvd copy arsenal, you are doing yourself a diservice. The integration of DVDSHRINK with Nero is outstanding...copy, shrink and burn with one program.

This little program is the greatest. I've been using DVD Shrink for the last 3 years. I have never lost or scrambled up a DVD like some other programs do. Like voice sink, some programs lose the voice sink when you shrink them. But this version and the previous verisons have never let me down. I have burned over 800 DVD's in the last 2 years. I have used several other programs to edit and shrink my movies, but DVD Shrink is still the best. Great Program!!!
