well if it makes you feel any better thats the only thing that has been consistent in every windows version since 95 it would not be windows if you didnt get the bsod.

well aside from what the other person said also check all connections to the drives and and mother board.

what was the last thing you installed before it started to freeze up on you that might be the problem .

bluescreenview free utility that will display bsod info,also check device manager then select event viewer to display errors

Since youre still on Vista I would ask how old is your hard drive? Hard drives in my experience last around 4 years. You also may want to downgrade to XP on your system as previously stated. You can also check your system compatibility with WIN 7 on the MS site as well.

As stated in previous posts, check all your connections, on ALL components. Reseat your ram chips and the CPU as well.

check the cpu heatsink assembly to see if clean of dust as might be causing cpu to overheat.

Do what the others said and then DUMP Vista.

Upgrade to XP or Win 7.
