firlight smart disk is dead.I took cover off which lets you remove hard drive......Iam thinking I could try and install hard drive on a old comp

Yes it is a possibility the enclosure is bad that houses the hard drive.That is one way of finding out. Then you can just buy another enclosure later for the hard drive if you want to.
