Y is it tht I connected hdmi cable but the surround does not work

why can we not get our rtd3136 home theater system to work on our mitsubishi 60inch flat screen tv? I mean if I watch a movie in the dvd system it works but for just tv use it does not. we want iit to be on all the time.
