Google how to do a system restore.Maybe you are doing it wrong.

I did they said if microsoft update is being used rather than window update, go back to using windows update and retry system restore. where are window update? I googled it and it shows up microsoft window updtaes

INFO - Windows update only works for windows itself. microsoft update is a collection of patches and updates for different microsoft products, like office and windows etc. Usually the user opts-in to microsoft update from a prompt. I dont know how to revert.
It sounds like your update settings might be on an external drive, or maybe you changed a drive letter. try plugging in your external and trying again if you have one.
