My neighbor bought a computer running a cracked version of vista ultimate a couple of years ago and was wandering if he could upgrade to a legit copy of windows 7. Is it possible to do this or would it fail to upgrade? He wants me to do this, and I dont want to kill his machine. I checked his machine it says it is OEM( I know its not)and it passes the windows update with no problem.

Pretty sure that you can install vista clean, non-activated, then upgrade to win 7 and activate.
He just wants the upgrade version since it is cheaper than buying the full version. Plus he doesnt want to lose any of his files and settings.
