Samsung has confirmed that their latest in-house Exynos processor will include a built-in LTE radio for the first time.
So far, Qualcomm's Snapdragons have remained the chip of choice for all high-end devices, thanks to their speed, and more recently, their built in GPUs and LTE radios which could not be matched.
The new Exynos ModAP chip has the LTE radio built in, and will be high-end quad-core processor. The radio will supposedly support LTE-Advanced (up to 250Mbps speeds), but being that LTE-A is still in its baby stages, the chip is really a Cat 4 LTE. Rivals like Qualcomm already have Cat 6 chipsets, which would double the speeds of the Cat 4, if you are hooked up to a network that can deliver it.
As expected, the chip was built on the 28nm die process, but it also includes an image signal processor that can process 1080p 30fps video and an "RF companion chip" for easier switching between connectivity types.
The chip is wholly impressive and can theoretically be powering new Samsung devices before the end of the year.
