Configure LAME MP3 Compression

LAME is a high quality command line encoder that's commonly used with EAC for making files which can be played on pretty much any computer or portable media player in the world.

Compression Options

Select Compression Options from the EAC menu. Go to the External Compression tab and check the box marked Use external program for compression.

Required Software

LAME

LAME is one of the best, if not the absolute best MP3 encoder available. Since it's a command line tool most people prefer to use a third party GUI, like EAC, to run it. EAC can encode to MP3 for you immediately after ripping a CD to your hard drive.

External Compression

Parameter Passing Scheme must be set to User Defined Encoder and the File extension to .mp3. Use the Browse button to locate lame.exe so EAC can run it for you.

The command line options should read like this:
-V # --vbr-new %s %d

Replace # with a number between 0 and 9. The lower the number, the higher the quality and bitrate/filesize. A value of 5 is approximately equivalent to 128kbps, while 2 will give you around 192kbps.

Check the box next to Add ID3 tag toward the bottom of the window.

Checking Delete WAV file after compression gets rid of the (uncompressed) audio file ripped from the CD after the LAME file is created. Check for external program's return code ensures you get any errors from LAME if there are problems.

ID3 Tags

The ID3 Tag tab allows you to create filenames based on the tags added. The list of options here is shorter than the regular EAC naming options because they only include fields from an ID3 tag.
