Blu-ray sales are impressive for 2008

According to Home Media Research compiled by the Redhill Group, it appears that Blu-ray sales are actually quite solid for the year, and up 300 percent year-on-year from 2007.
The research says that Blu-ray movies are selling at about 1.14 million per month on average for the year, for a total of about 8 million. The combined total for 2006 and 2007 was about 6 million discs sold.

The latest numbers completely contradict ABIresearch's recent projections that Blu-ray was seeing a "lukewarm response" from consumers and that the PS3 was the "only bright spot" for the format.

ABI's survey was conducted in April, a month after Toshiba decided to stop production of rival HD DVD and it seems that sales have skyrocketed since then with only one format on the market.

Andy Parsons, Senior Vice President, Product Planning, Pioneer Home Entertainment Group & U.S. Chairman, Blu-ray Disc Association Promotions Committee, added strong reasoning as to why the ABIresearch study was not trust worthy, outdated and flat out wrong.

“ABI Research’s data appears to have been collected just after Q1 2008 when demand for Blu-ray was very high and supplies were low. With the abrupt end of the format war in February, hardware manufacturers and retailers were faced with a sudden, unexpected pent-up demand for players -- a phenomenon that was confirmed by retailers in subsequent press reports.

"Because hardware production schedules are arranged many months in advance, most player manufacturers needed a fair amount of time to respond to the increased demand. My own company (Pioneer) is still working to fill backorders for example.

“Another factor that must be considered is where we are in the adoption curve for Blu-ray. New publishing formats typically require several years before they can begin to establish themselves in the mass market. For comparison purposes, I looked back at some old DVD industry newsletters from the end of 1998 -- roughly the same early point in DVD's life that we're at now with Blu-ray -- and found a couple of analyst quotes that seem short-sighted in retrospect. One predicted a 'long and healthy life ahead for VHS.' Another was quoted as saying that DVD hardware sales were 'slow to take off, partly due to consumer confusion." If Internet polls had existed ten years ago, I'm certain that similarly low consumer interest levels would have been detected for DVD, even though it obviously became a highly successful format.

"Bottom line: no one should be too eager to make declarations about Blu-ray Disc's progress in the market now, because it's just too soon after launch."

Not a real shocker here but they do need to start dropping prices on Hardware & Software. If they don't by the holidays then Blu-Ray will find themselves with very serious issues.

Why do they keep insisting that Blu-ray is doing much better than it actually is? About 8 million BD movies sold in USA during 2008 is still minuscule, when one title on DVD sells millions of copies within USA. For instance titles like "I Am Legend" or "National Treasure - Book of Secrets" have sold each about 6 million DVDs in USA since they were released months ago, and there're hundreds of DVD titles released annually. I'm sure BD backers are praising this as a mayor accomplishment, but in reality it is not.

Maybe because Blu-ray just started as opposed to DVD? It's like when a parent says how well their 2 year old is doing with walking. DVD is like the teenager that runs track.

Sounds like all BS to me. Who knows where they get their data from?
If sales are skyrocketing, then there a lot of people paying way too much money for movies. I will not be joining them any time soon.
Not until prices go way down.

The playstation is the only saving grace for Blu-Ray.

you know what, they can keep their attempts to lock down all content as i'll be sticking with analogue or copy write infringement until they realise that they should not be constantly screwing us all over, i will not support draconian restrictions to aid them to rape the world.

blu-ray = drm tool

its funny this information comes at the time of the sales details of the ps3 slumping, as the ps3 is the only reason that any blu-ray disks are sold!

Wii still doing well, PS3 takes sales hit

Quote:
Unfortunately for Sony, they actually saw a sales dip. July netted them a little over 221 thousand PS3 sales, which gives them a “middle of the road” look. PS3 sales actually went down about 45% compared to last month, but even so they managed to best Microsoft by a small amount.
how many dvd's are sold exactly, and im sure these figures are quite pathetic in regards to, even the amount of ps3's there are in existence.

take note and ask yourself why ps3 sales were as high as they were in june? it was the result of one game and one game only. it needs no explanation but surely any rational individual would expect console sales to return to their "normal" levels. funny you say "slump" when the system still sold more than its main competitor. stating the downward fall in sales by "X" percent for the ps3 from June to July is simply PR spin. the answer is obvious to those who see the big picture.

there was no price drop or any hit titles announced during july so one would expect sales to level off. it is the middle of summer anyhow, not really the make or break it time of year which actually isnt too far off.

buying BRs online is the best option for getting movies at reasonable prices. i do really enjoy the fantastic picture of BR and look forward to watching Ironman, transformers, Dark Knight etc etc in the near future. prices aren't that expensive if you shop in around...

Do you really hate musicians that much?

Only the Asshat ones, when you become rich and famous you let it get to your head, you then forget who made you what you are. An artist cannot portray his paintings if nobody looks. A poet cannot preform if nobody is willing to watch. A musician cannot preform music if nobody is willing to listen.

We the people, that consume will do so only if you prove it worth are money and time.
