New PlayStation due within 18 months?

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 03 May 2007 7:51 User comments (23)

New PlayStation due within 18 months? According to Sony sources quoted in Smarthouse, a new PlayStation will be available in less than 18 months.
The console will not be entirely new, say the sources, and will include the same architecture as the PS3 with the exception of a new bay drive and attachment area. The new console however, will include an extensive media center software suite for managing content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source.

It would seem that the new updates will try to convert the PS3 to a home entertainment hub from a gaming machine.
“We have even looked at a Sony home server based on PlayStation technology. This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library,” said one Sony source.

Based on these sources, and the industry shift into home entertainment space, it seems very possible that a new PlayStation console (not a PlayStation 4) is in the works.

Although it never made it out of Japan, Sony Corp. released a similar product in 2003 called the PSX. The PSX was a home entertainment center based on the PS2 hardware and also included DVD recordable functionality. Sales were poor.

I predict a same outcome...expecially with Sony's pricing on alot of their products.

i dont want DRM hell with the ps3 so you can stick this, going to be DRM laden load of crap too, what have sony given us, hmmm.

BD+ STRANGLEHOLD ON CONTENT. the studio can remotely disable all of the affected players if the crypto is broken.

ARccOS: New Sony DVD DRM breaks Sony DVD players

CLEFIA: Shocking news here: Sony's conjuring up yet another proprietary format instead of just making nice with the ones already available.

XCP: The label was alerted to the secret, virus-vulnerable software on its CDs long before the scandal broke. Trouble is, it didn't act immediately to alert consumers.

we love you sony (or the riaa/mpaa as they should be known!) just keep giving us what we want loads of DRM to destroy interoperability and reduce or enjoyment of all forms of media!

For all the die hard fanboys of Sony, now you have nothing to gripe about as Sony has another verion of IT'S console!

So for all of the people griping about different versions of the Xbox 360, Sony is NO DIFFERENT!

44.5.2007 02:19

Please, what a total load of nonsense this is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear%2C_uncertainty_and_doubt

Just because Microsoft stitched the 360 owners over with a new console revision after a year, Sony know better than that.

Lets look logically. Why would they produce a new console revisoon based on PS3? Perhaps with a bigger HDD? The HDD is already customer upgradable in the PS3, no why bother. Perhaps software changes? Well being based on the same Cell, there is no reason why the current PS3 would not be able to do the same software. Perhaps hardware? The PS3 has a load of USB2 ports, more than enough for any hardware expansion.

The only thing where Sony missed a trick, is putting USB ports on the rear, or some kind of universal expansion slot.

This article is nothing more than Microsoft sponsored FUD. Sony rarely respond to press rumours, and usually give a "we don't comment on internet rumours". This time however, Sony have responded "this is total garbage"..

LOL..If you ask me sound like a load of Bull that story don't make any sense...lmao.Why remake a console that don't have any advantages over the current gen console.

Omg this is another funny article yall get worked up off anything. If they said they was making a PS3 with a built in tv and wheels at the bottom i think some of yall would commit suicide off that article lmao.

Also like someone already said what real advantage would this have for Sony. They really dont need to sell you a PS3 with a bigger Hard drive you can do that your self. Not like going to up the processor or swap the motherboard for a better one. The only logical thing i can see them doing is making custom PS3 in different colors. But for right now this article doesnt sound like its much truth in it at all. On top of that they currently dont have hardware issues like the 360. Just system cost and better games needed for the future which happen soon enough.

1. STOP multiposting
2. How is this microsoft "fud"?
3. Have you all even read the article?

"This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library,”"

Sounds like what the PC/Mac can already do with any Media Centre Extension device.I don't think it would be any more versatile
with what's all ready on offer with current platforms.
Open source PC device or closed source Sony proprietry device.
No contest....PC/Mac for the win!

you xbox vs PS3 blokes are starting to sound a lot like those pathetic MS vs Apple, Windows vs Linux, my egocentric beliefs vs your egocentric beliefs people....

Where's this site headed? Forums use to be more than just a bunch of my sh!t smells better than your sh!t posts....

This whole thing is just here-say if its not an official statement from Sony. Also, anyone ever think of how ironic it is that Sony and Microsoft fight each other out viciously in the game market yet Sony uses Windows on their PCs? And I should probably state that that was not a fanboy comment because some idiot will probably flip out over it *rolls eyes*.

The ps3 just came out and they are already talking about the next one plus another 2 in another article posted earlier. I think ill just wait for ps6 to make it and then think about getting that one.

All of this is just here-say. In neither this article or the other was there an official statement made.

Sony have always comes out with a newer version of there consoles since the first Playstation, usually half the size of the last. And since when did M$ come out with a different version of the 360? Lmao it's just a different colour with a bigger HDD. On the plus side though, black does make the "Ring of Death" look a lot nicer :P

Quite frankly, all this wasted bandwidth over Sonys 'anticipated' release of a new playstation is laughable. So, your the manager of the division that developed the PS3 and after all the hoops you had to go through to get it out, your boss asks you, "Now what are you going to do for me lately?" Sound cruel - you bet...thats business...and given the reality that Sony loses about $300 on each PS3 they sell, and are ditching the 20 GB version they need something to try and make money. The PS 3 is many years away from break even, the xbox is closer, but that is only because they got over a year head start. Fact is, Nintendo is the only game box that actually makes the company money! And they do it because it is their only business. So now Sony looks around and sees a niche in which it can move the PS3 platform - and it is kinda smart. The Media Center PC is a pain in the ass to work with...it suffers all the problems of any MS product, and one can fairly easily put linux on the PS3 and have a hell of a 'PC'. I've done that, even 'copied' games and added a 500 GB HD. So, given the PS3 is roughly 3 times the performance of where PCs are currently, it make perfect sense to bolster its capability to include more 'home entertainment' goodies. Provided Sony does not screw it up like MS. And provided they don't make everything Sony propriatiary...Which if they follow the PS3 lead, they won't. I'd like to see where they take it. And 18 months is about average life of a consumer product.. I think the key will be to make the new product compatable with the PS3 games. So, in summary, have at it Sony, but just don't dump it like you did the Clie!...

The one thing I have to say to that is around 90% of MS (offices etc)run MAC's .
I'm not even going to comment on the original article because these days there are so many idiots on this site that take peoples opinions way to seriously, that they have ended up scaring all the original members away from this site.

well if you read between the lines sony is working on a more media friendly PS3 or is revamping the PS3 to be cheaper,DRM might be updated who knows.
