Sony aims to resolve PS3 shortages by May

Written by James Delahunty @ 27 Feb 2007 6:45 User comments (37)

Sony aims to resolve PS3 shortages by May Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America has told Reuters that Sony is working to resolve PS3 shortages by May and that the company is on track to have shipped 2 million PS3 consoles to North America by the end of March. "April or May is when we feel like we're going to catch up to demand and have product fully in stock across North America and stay there," Tretton said.
When asked about claims that PS3s are sitting on shelves in some area's in North America, Tretton said, "Our goal is to fill shelves across the United States. Our goal is not to have empty shelves, it's to have full shelves. If we have empty shelves, that's one less consumer who could have bought a PlayStation 3."

When asked about PS3 shipment goals, he said, "We're in pretty good shape to do that. The early returns are quite favorable," he said. Sony set of a goal of shipping 6 million PS3 consoles worldwide by March 2007.

What? Everywhere I go there are PS3's in stock.

227.2.2007 19:22

Yeah, they are in stock everywhere I go...

327.2.2007 19:37

Sale strategy, they know their is going to be too many sitting on the shelves so they are trying to make themselves look like they are caring about the customer.

427.2.2007 19:49

WTF there's no shortages. If it wasnt for Sony Home Entertainment and the rest of Sonys croonies in the MPAA demanding Region coding they could just ship the surplus that in the states right now. Funny thing is there was never a need for a delay in Europe. Imagine if Sony had shipped the 6 million it promised for 2006 you think retailers are pissed now you just wait, you cant just have inventory just collecting dust.

Wiis are still out of stock...PS3s are overflowing on the shelves around where I live. I would actually fork over the $600 if they had some decent games available.

627.2.2007 21:38

around may? what? what are they smoking? PS3 is collecting dust.

727.2.2007 22:35

What shortages?

828.2.2007 00:22

Consoles are NOT sitting on shelves, contary to what the fanboys believe. Has anyone checked serial numbers? No, the units you see on the shelves this week are DIFFERENT to the units you saw on the shelves last week.

The PS3 is selling well regardless of what the Microsoft programmed drones tell you..

u can kiss my ass the ps3 is not selling as well as the wii or the xbox360.for the price of a ps3 u can have a wii and a core 360.and 1 game i think it is crazy for sony not to offer a unit without bluray.because in short most of us dont give a damn about bluray or HD long live DVD

1028.2.2007 03:44

Hate to say it folks, but it's not the same PS3's sitting on the shelves. I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy for any console, but I own a 360 and a Wii. Several years ago, I bought the PS2 when it first launched and owned it for many years before picking up a Gamecube or Xbox. Unfortunately, myself, like many others, don't see the value in buying a $600 Blu-ray player that can also run Virtua Fighter 5. The fact is, Wii's are selling like hotcakes and PS3 systems are sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Think of it this way: Nintendo has shipped almost 3 times as many Wii consoles than Sony has shipped PS3 units. Base everything on demand and see that the PS3 is not doing so hot, as it has less supply and is on the shelf and the Wii has more supply and people are still waiting outside overnight for them at big box stores. Another point: doesn't Xbox Live have more subscribers than PS3 have consoles sold? (at least in the US?)

Thank you some people think that launch console are still there to...lol

I say Sony is selling very good but to hear shortage i wouldn't go that far but hey if they say it then it must be true because they are losing 200 dollars per console so i don't think they going to make console's just for the fun of it.

Wow, that MUST mean they are not selling. I suggest going back to school and studying economics..

The 360 is in stock everywhere I go, and has been for a year, by your measure, that means it's an even bigger flop...

Jez some people really are thick...

1428.2.2007 07:41

Yeah, I guess you're right about the 360 sitting on shelves... it's not like 10 million+ don't already have one!

The fact that there are ps3's in stock is proof enough that there is no shortage.
They may not be the same unit, but there are always units available.

No it's proof enough that the supply chain is moving.....

So, why is the Chief Executive saying there's a shortage?

Quote:
Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America has told Reuters that Sony is working to resolve PS3 shortages by May
shortage:
A condition that exists when demand exceeds supply because of a lack of equilibrium in a market. If a price is artificially low, buyers want to buy more of a good than sellers are willing to sell.

Maybe he means theres a shortage in buyers?

i dont think 10 million people want a 600.00 machine with only 2 good games.sony do yourself a favor drop the blueray and drop the price.i think there should have been a core w/out blueray in the offer

Thats a question only Sony know they have the sales figures. They might be right but i don't think so but for anyone to say its not selling is totally not true.

I agree that ps3's are selling.
But they are selling at least at the same pace as they are being produced.

Quote:
No it's proof enough that the supply chain is moving.....

...And so far, production and distribution are keeping up with consumer demand. Thus, no shortages.
Since you're so adept to economic terms, we could describe this situation as:
the quantity supplied is equal to quantity demanded. Matter of fact, if they are always on shelves but always being sold at the same rate, we could describe it as being efficient, couldn't we?
So where is the problem that is the subject of this news article?

Funny talking with most of the people that stock it and sale them say otherwise but believe what you want.

BTW heres how they are going to fix this imaginary problem remove the PS2 hardware, get someone else to make the CPU and force them to sell it to them cheaper, remove any everything they can from the unit to make it cheaper to make and sell it at a loss of only 200$ at CURRENT PRICES !! ..................................................

Sorry bobby but there is no shortage that a fact check out walmart.com on the front page it says we have ps3's in stock, the market has spoken.

231.3.2007 07:47

I was in gamestop this morning and got to talking to one of the employees there, he told me that they sell a PS3 every now and then, they had a hard time keeping them in stock before xmas but sales have slowed down a lot afterwards, he also mentioned that the wii shipments sell out in 15 minutes, but on a slow day they may last a couple of hours. I didn't think to ask about the 360 but I would imagine they probably sell around the same rate as the PS3.

He stated the same thing most of us already know, it's hard to sell a $600 system that only has one good exclusive. MS is coming out soon so that should help a little, but, in my opinion, Sony is going to need to get some really killer exclusives out like MGS4 to start moving the system and justify the price to more people.

Okay everybody, pay close attention; I just broke out of Sony's North American Headquarters Office, and I got their top secret plan to get systems back in stock by May! Bear with me if I seem a bit fanatical, I was ambushed on my way out by Sony's evil squad of chimp-henchman, led by Ken Kutaragi!

Sony indeed will have systems back on store shelves by this May. They have been secretly traning an army of small campbell's (aka Syberian Dwarf)hamsters to infiltrate the pet stores of America. These tiny creatures will slowly be distirbuted through American households under the product title of the 'Sony PlayStationPooper', named after their ability to fill a small cage in a matter of days. These furry evil-trained rodents will replicate in mass once sold, passing on hereditarily, their evil training from Sony. When every household in America has five of them (Estimated by April 7th, 2007; assuming that production on Sony's new 'Evil Corp'© processor manufactures according to plan.) Once this goal is reached, the hamsters will turn on humans, enslaving North American consumers, turning them into mindless drones, through the cunning use of hypno-helmets and evil-cuteness. They will control all of us, remove all Sony playstation 3's from store shelves, and hide them in a small burrow in ZippyDSM's backyard. (Yes, I picked his name at random, so that's where they're hiding it!!!!) Once all the PS3's are hidden in the larg underground burrow in ZippyDSM's backyard; they will return us all to our normal daily lives, and we'll each sort of 'snap' back into reality holding notes that say "Where have all the PS3's gone?"

Sony's plan then, after a few days, will be to have the evil campbell's hamsters(Aka syberian dwarf hamsters) take all the PS3's in North America out of the burrow in ZippyDSM's backyard and put them into stores overnight, in addition to new systems that Sony will produce overseas while this entire incident has occured. The entire country will wake up one morning, and there will be breaking news on television, "The mysterious dissapearance of PS3's across the US has come to an end! PS3's are again, sitting on store shelves-"

This is Sony's big plan. Unfortunately, they haven't planned for the next sentence that will inevitably come out of the telecaster's mouths

"-and analysts estimate it's going to be a long time before these consoles move anywhere, because at a minimum price tag of $499 plus tax for a system without a game, no one is willing to pay out for this overhyped, oversized George Foreman grill."

........Zing.

I'm sorry, but I was very bored. And it was there.

Like some posters earlier, I have also spoken with Gamestop employees who confirm that they can't keep the Wii in stock for more than three hours but can't seem to entice anyone to buy a PS3.
I have all three systems and can't help but think if the PS3 were the only one I had, I would be freakin' out of my mind mad at the game selection and quality.
As it is, I can pop in Gears of War and wait patiently until the PS3 game drought ends (come on Motorstorm).

293.3.2007 20:33

I'm in California (San Diego) and I haven't heard 'sold out' since December, regarding PS3's.

I've seen about 50/50 on Wii, so I won't say it's flying off the shelf here; but it moves plenty quick.

Truthfully though, Nintendo is going to need to step up their selection quick, people are getting bored; this kind of dead space between major releases is fatal to a new system with so much on the line.

this is a issue to me for the WII
http://www.gamepoliticsforums.com/showth...25137#post25137

however the WII dose need polish in its gameplay (look at the review for COD 3) if they cant bring coherent smooth and presice control, whats the fing point I can easily see the first party games having the needed polish but 2nd and 3rd party...OMG the cookie cutter control scheme horde modern devs have become are not goign tot ake the time and do the controls right....

the wii's battle is up hill, but for now its not fell off the mountain yet :P

the PS3 is under the mountain and the 360 is lost somewhere half way from the top........

314.3.2007 05:52

I look at it this way; whenever a new peripheral comes out, 3rd parties take their sweet time about getting it right. It happened with the rumble pack; it happened with the DS; so it only makes sense that it will happen with the Wii. I expected them to screw up a few titles when they released, and that's normal. Fortunately, I'm not at all interested in CoD3, so I lucked out there. Other games from third parties have been spot on, such as trauma center and raving rabbids. It really depends on the studio producing it; and how much they really care. Ea and Activision are notorious for releasing terrible launch ports, just to get a few games out for the system on day one. So, it was probably a very rush job, without doubt.

I'm a bit concerned about MoH Vangaurd coming to the Wii; I don't know how much care EA is going to put into that one.

And furthermore.... Nintendo! WHERE'S OUR FREAKING ONLINE PLAY!?!?!

Lol; not that there are enough titles to really notice right now... But if Nintendo would jump on the 'Live Arcade' bandwagon with some online Tetris or something.... I would be inclined to download it and stop sleeping. :D

EA,edios, activision, devX are not to keen on polish thats my point.... sure a dev could take the time but what pub now adays wil let them take that time?

Look at XIII on the GC thats the poorest control port I have every seen no south paw mode no button config just 1 static sorry arse cookie cutter control config, this is why nintendo needs to put a config app in the wii...

334.3.2007 07:58

Ahhh, I see your point.

Except for one thing.

They have. It directly relates your wii usage to static input, and allows devs to essentially remap wii movement in about one to two hours. Incredibly simple stuff. But I think devs haven't *used* it.

Too late for them.

Everyone I know already has a 360, and i've been hearing nothing but fun from them online. I have someone ask me probably once a week when I'm getting online with a 360.

Not one person says anything about the PS3.
