Sales of PlayStation 3 jump 135 percent since price drop

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 24 Jul 2007 5:34 User comments (41)

Sales of PlayStation 3 jump 135 percent since price drop According to data figures by NPD Group, since its price drop over a week ago, sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 have skyrocketed 135 percent.
Sony says the numbers are a combination of sales from the company's five largest retailers. As an added bonus, total hardware sales were up 161 percent, software was up 15 percent, and peripherals were up 60 percent.

The price of the 60 GB model of the console dropped to $499, a hundred dollar price dip.

"The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail,"
said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony America.

Tretton continued, "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction."

For the month of June, PS3 sales jumped 21 percent from May's sales with just under 100,000 sold.

And yet the morons are going to raise the price on the next output of consoles.

224.7.2007 17:44

ok great but i guess the big question is once the 60 gig models are all gone and the 80 gigs are still 599 will we see the article "playstation sales plummit"? i think we will.

meh you never kno...sales up 135% should definatly make Sony think twice about what they plan to do. Maybe they wanted to test a good price point that would get ppl to buy the PS3 and maybe $499 seems to do the trick? who knows...just we'll just have to wait and see.

424.7.2007 17:54

I agree with the two posts before me as we have always said. The ps3 is still just a game console. The cheapest blue-ray player doesn't mean crap because the general public isn't raising an eyebrow at any high def until prises drop dramatically within the next 3 years or so. Plus until 90% of consumers own an hdtv the technology isn't going to generate the profit dvd does. They could ask their original price if it were 2017.

This really tells Sony alot, like people are willing to buy a PS3 as long as the price is right. This is a clear indicator that people don't like a $599 price tag on a system that has no games. Sony would have to be really stupid to raise the price back up once the 60GB's are no longer available, that pretty much would be a disaster for Sony. I think they're finally getting their act together and will have the 80GB go down in price to $499..it only makes since. Do you honestly believe that Sony will raise the price again after knowing consumers already rejected that price point. The only reason they won't tell us about the 80GB version dropping in price is because alot of people would wait for that version and they wouldn't sell the 60GB version they need to get out of the market.

624.7.2007 18:25

If the PS3 could be bought at the price of a 360 or less, the sales would be much higher as sony is the preferred gaming provider, it's just that the price tag is to high for the average consumer.

Sound's good to me. I'm not going to complain about something positive because that's just retarded.

I think this guy is right on. Had to fix the first sentence (notice the italics) but he is probably right on the last sentence also, if people found out they could get the better system for the same price if they waited a couple months, why would they buy the inferior system? Just glad I've waited to get into the next-gen.

Mine's collecting dust too. Everytime I turn it on there's another update for me to download. Dunno how they manage to increase sales by 135% I reckon its a typo. Or Sony are lying so people go out and buy em before there all gone. Had mine since launch and only 1 game (Motostorm) Had 360 since last year (August 06) have 20 games.

1225.7.2007 02:41

the PS3 and Wii definitely have the best game lineup and I think this price drop will indeed persuade some those who were hesitating to buy on.

1325.7.2007 02:50

The 80gb is cheaper to manufacture than the 60gb. I forsee the 80gb at $499 in the near future.

1425.7.2007 12:21

I would love to see actual numbers of consoles. I think Sony is manipulating the numbers again (big surprise) and saying the sales were up that high for ONE WEEK. Think about it. For simplicity, we'll say they sold 90,000 conoles last month. To increase their sales 100% this month, they would have to sell at least 180,000 consoles in one month. According to VGChartz.com, the PS3 sold 73,721 consoles for the week ending July 22nd, which is almost how much they sold for all of last month (if accurate). The Wii sold 159,034, and the DS and PSP are still outselling all of the next gen systems. This is good press for Sony, but after the initial buyers that were holding out for a PS3 either buy one, or the 60gb stock runs out, they'll have to find another number to inflate to keep the PS3 looking good. At this rate, I'll bet it's the price tag of the 80gb model!

the PS3 has nothing. maybe the Wii has a few games. but the Wii is in a class of its own with its little motion controller deal. think about what u type man.

1625.7.2007 14:16

Well of course! Now that they've gotten a boat load of money from all the people stupid enough to pay twice what they should for something that is all hype, now they'll drop the price a little to crank out some more sales. Then once that tapers off a little, they'll drop it again (or like some said, drop the 80GB version).

These aren't spontaneous decisions that Sony is making. They're doing exactly what they had planned all along. And it's the extreme Sony fanboys with cash to blow that are proving them right.

You all are hilarious. I see every time there is some positive news about the PS3 the fanboys start making their b.s. comments. Okay if you do not like the PS3 fine. Why can't you all be happy and play whatever system you have?

Why would someone care about grammar here. It's as is you think you are perfect and by correcting the mistakes of others you are tooting your horn. Well if you want to be real about the grammar, then why not start first with correcting your own grammar with using correct spacing between a period and the beggining of a new sentence and then look at a few other punctuation marks that you missed throughout your own posts here.

Sony would definitely by crazy to raise the price of the 80 gig PS3. If the system is moving more consoles then dont try to fix the situation, just leave it alone.

100% more of 20 is still only 40 so its not great, its just the price drop wave that comes with such things, the rumor mil is hackign the logs the truth over the 600$ 80GB units I think sony bit off more than it can chew and must leave the PS3 at 500 but knowing sony LOL.

Why did you have to bring back those memories? I have had nightmares because of some of the voice work of games.
jk
Also, it doesnt matter how much the system costs if you don't have the games. If they keep the current price drop permanent (as they should) with the upcoming line up of games, they will start cleaning up (though another price drop wouldn't hurt).

But but I have nightmares all the time abotu bad voice work :P
but anyway the PS3 should start gaining/out gaining the 360 by the end of 08, it would taker a micrial for the 360 to not be forced to the 3rd seat in a couple years thats how much brand power the PS3 has the reason for a couple of years game build up and price drops.

3028.7.2007 01:25

How do you know that the ps3 will outsell the xbox 360? You can't back this up, you can't know if the wii will stay on the top either. All three next-gen consoles are top of their class, you can't predict what will happen in a year or even in a week. Analysts make prediction, but hey! Weren't they the ones that used to say the wii won't sell anything.....You never know the outcome with these things.
Sorry if my english isn't so good...I'm greek :P

It all depends on what kind of gamer you are. Right now both systems are making too many shooters. I am an RPG person, I know the games are coming, Hell, I bought a PS3 JUST FOR FFXIII... its just what you crave, or want in a system.

Also wanted to add, Personally, I don't follow the systems as a rule. I follow the franchises. There are certain franchises that I just like to play, one main one being square-enix, then capcom and team silents games. I go where the storytelling is... If the games have excellent storytelling then I go there.

3428.7.2007 07:15

Well, the wii is not on top yet, but its amolst caught up to the Xbox 360 and it has potential to stay up there.

It has outsold PS3 3:1 because of three reasons:
1. Its for all ages
2. The price is not even 50% of the PS3's price
3. More games.

And fact 3 isn't really true either because most of the games are GC/PS2-ports with updated controls. The only games I can think of that are really WII-exclusive are the Mario games and Red Steel.

IMO the PS3 could catch up if it lowered console prices. All the PSs came out at a high price which was lowered shortly thereafter -its aparrently sony's marketing strategy.

3529.7.2007 14:41

Heck with all this crap about which system is better, some people drive fords, some chevy's, but they get there just the same. I bought the ps3 because of upcoming games and the blu-ray player built inside.

Some chevy's are better some fords are better but then again at least with them milage and power is understandable, the consoles only differ in games for the most part,of coarse the wii is the lil electric car that could :P

Bad news, it is rumored this price drop is only until inventory clears and the new 80gb version hits the market at the old 599 price.

there's an old saying "smooke um if you got um" with ps3 it's "get um while they have um"
