Demonoid returns but forced to block Canadian traffic to site

Demonoid is finally back online after a week of downtime in which rumors swirled that the tracker was taken down by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Although the rumors proved to be somewhat true, the tracker and website are still being hosted on a Canadian ISP but now must block all Canadian traffic.
A note on the Demonoid homepage had this to say, "We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience."

This latest decision mirrors the recent situations with other public trackers Isohunt and TorrentSpy which were forced to block access to US users.

Although the forums and the site in general still seem to be in somewhat of disarray, the admins promise to have it up and running at full pace in a few days.

This "traffic shaping" sucks but at least its better then the alterative of the torrent sites being constantly hounded by feds.

Hopefully they don't have to block USA traffic or that will be another small victory for the MPAA/RIAA. But, sounds like Demonoid is only blocking Canada traffic so it doesn't get into trouble for being hosted there.

Peace

Deimos pays for the website out of his own pocket !!!!!!!

Do you have any money to contribute towards lawyers eh??

If not, that's not a very nice thing to say is it??

Demonoid has some hard to find torrents, it'll be a shame if all Canadian ISPs block access to the site.

But they can't get away with that because every blank CD bought in Canada has a levy fee on top of what you normally pay, so in a sense you pay for the music through that. Who collects the levy fees? CRIA.... I'm sure CRIA doesn't want a class action suit on their hands.

went to Demonoid and it said this:
The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We'll be back soon
Didn't mention anything about being bloacked.

I'm in Canada....and yes, the site it blocked. Which is really too bad. Makes more hassle for me. Now I have to load proxy settings, then wait for the slow speeds. :( frustrating, to say the least, but I believe it's worth it :)

And I can see Deimos's view in not taking this whole things to court, even with a precedent being set. I mean, if they make this whole thing drag on, it could bury him in fees. Then Demonoid's fucked. So I support him. Donate, people!!! I give $10 a month. Nothing to me, but if 1000 people who visited did that, it'd be a lot of money, with faster servers and maybe even the chance to move and avoid this "No Canadians" BS

This really sucks, I live in Canada and love Demonoid.
I'll guess I'll have to use one of the many other torrent sites.
But none are as good as demonoid.

141.10.2007 07:28

this site had torrents that actually showed up before other sites and have some exclusives and the hard-to-find stuff.
i'm uber angry and will continue to be if the entertainment mafia blocks this site completely.
we all get screwed by owing at tax time or at getting very little back, they pilidge our paychecks for taxes and they shank you for every little thing that "has" to be taxed like property.
so why can't they leave us alone? is it because the music industry is crying that they can only afford a 12room mansion and a viper instead of a 36room mansion a mazeratti equipped with pirating missiles? lol

hey, what proxy do you use? I do hope that Demonoid won't block Canadian ISP's for eternity!!! But I guess its just fair coz recently, torrentspy.com have blocked every American ISP's which sucks for them. So it works both ways...

You shouldn't be boasting about it. The Canadians were constantly boasting to USA and the rest of us how they can get away with anything and now look. If we start boasting (I'm from Europe too btw) then we'll probably get noticed too....maybe :)

LOL children, don't shoot the messenger.....the precedent was set in 2004, so?? I was only posting what I found, take it or leave it. O know Canadians have posted in this thread....why not state the law?? I know most of you are too lazy, but here is the case http://www.canlii.org/en/ca/fct/doc/2004...2004fc488.html.

Sensitive and dense, nice combo! You think Deimos foots the bill?? Demonoid is the second largest tracker after TPB....I am pretty confident this guy is living pretty nicely with all the "donations" he receives.

Sorry I put a period at the end of the link, got messed up. My apologies.

A little snippet I found interesting

Quote:
[25]Thus, downloading a song for personal use does not amount to infringement. See Copyright Board's, Private Copying 2003-2004 Decision, 12 December, 2003, at page 20.

[26]No evidence was presented that the alleged infringers either distributed or authorized the reproduction of sound recordings. They merely placed personal copies into their shared directories which were accessible by other computer users via a P2P service.
edit again

I have no idea if these laws are obsolete. From what I have read and been told these laws do still exist. No need to go after me for posting what I found using Google lol.

I'm in the US too, and having no trouble accessing ISOHUNT or TorrentSpy...so much for blocking. I recommend Canadian users to get a VPN tunnel to a proxy ISP outside their country and then they'll have no problem either...it's just a less direct connection...ayy the beauty of a world wide web.

I copied this...it includes much good advice....I would also suggest paying for your Relakks via International Money Order...under an assumed name & get a private mail box(not a USP post office box)..one of those private mail box addresses at UPS store etc. anyway:

I use Relakks and the Tor Button Plug-In for anonymity with Firefox, and I use Hushmail to maintain my relakks account, but I wonder if using these services acts as some kind of "red flag" as far as the FBI is concerned (did I automatically become the subject of some kind of investigation, just by using these services?) and I wonder if Tor servers are not actually controlled by the FBI or other intelligence agencies. Actually, I kind of doubt either option is 100% secure (ie, not infiltrated by so-called "jackbooted thugs"). But these are the best options I know of for guarding my privacy, and as far as I can tell, our rights have been eroded pointlessly and needlessly. So using these resources is like making a mild political statement, an objection to government overstepping its bounds - I think everyone should do it. Oh, and by the way Big Brother, you don't belong in our bedrooms either...

RELAKKS Safe Surf (http://www.relakks.com - EUR 5.00 per month )...

The Service consists of an encrypted VPN tunnel between your computer and RELAKKS. The IP-number you receive from your existing ISP is only used to connect your computer to RELAKKS,from there on RELAKKS substitute your existing IP-number with a new IP-number from RELAKKS. This gives you a number of advantages:

· Your existing ISP will not be able to intercept and track your applications or communication

· Your existing ISP can not limit what you can do nor limit what information you can access

· Other organizations or individuals can’t intercept or track your applications or communication.

And Torpark or Tor Button...

Torrify/Torpak (I use the free browser) http://www.torrify.com/intro.html - They also offer "secure offshore servers" and "secure email" as well as "anonymous payment processing". $35+ per month. (I think it's SLOW, and expensive for my simple purposes.)

Torbutton is a 1-click way for Firefox users to enable or disable the browser's use of Tor. It adds a panel to the statusbar that says "Tor Enabled" (in green) or "Tor Disabled" (in red)... http://freehaven.net/~squires/torbutton/

Oh, and http://www.anonymous-p2p.org/ - great resource. Spread the word.

I'm a member of Demonoid from Canada, and I've got question.

If I use a proxy to access the site again, would I still have my old account, or will I have to open a new account?

Thanks for any replies.

I don't believe there would be any techno reason for having to establish a new account just because you're using a proxy as a "front door" agent to get in. But, i was just over there 3 minutes ago...and the Member List was under "repair" which leads me to believe they are at this time..purging all members with Canadian ISP's (e-mail accounts or other indications that those members are Canadian.) For Your protection as well as Demonoid's). So, yep you might have to open a new account...Not sure. That would be a good question for:
Gate_Keeper@demonoid.com

331.10.2007 21:51

Thank you.

If they are indeed purging their Canadian accounts, then I guess I'll have to start over.

Demonoid is by far my favorite site to give it up without a fight.

Thats one of the good things about living in a small country like NZ (I do too), the likelyhood of us being blocked from anywhere is slim. They have bigger fish to fry, would be better if we had better Broadband speeds though :(

... OK, tried the link posted above and it gets me to something called www.demonoiders.com but then it has this "standby mode" in the middle of the screen and nothing else... what up with that?

On another note, I visites CRIA's website today (Oct.02,2007) and NOWHERE on their OWN website could I find that file sharing in Canada is illegal! What a crock'o'shite with Demonoid then! As far as i know/could find in the news, the file sharing in Canada is still legal by a court order from a couple years back, and even CRIA say on their own website that:

"The WIPO Treaties were adopted in Geneva in 1996 to provide a substantial legal basis for healthy electronic commerce with a particular benefit to the music industry.

Canada signed its intent to ratify the Treaties in 1997, but to date has not passed implementing legislation to reform the Copyright Act and allow Canada to ratify the Treaties. Meanwhile, over 60 countries worldwide, including all of Canada's major trading partners (including the US, most of the European Union, Japan and Mexico) have implemented the WIPO Treaties, while Canada has been relegated to the sidelines."

link to that here: http://www.cria.ca/wipo.php

So I really don't understand what the hell is going on with Demonoid cutting us Canadians out.

... so, how do I get there via proxies? PM me, I beg you!

+1 here!

I did get in on the 2nd try (after re-entering password and typing in the anti-robot code) so looks like the IDs are still good to go.
Of course, I've used a US-based proxy.

OK,
To all canadains out there that want to do on demonoid but can't here's how I did it. Step 1. go to proxy.org and pick a proxy site (look for 4proxy.com - I am currently using this one with no problem). now after it takes you to it's site type in www.demonoid.com in the blank space where it asks for your URL. This should take you to demonoid home page, from there type in your username and acces code ( dont be afraid if it says that there is an error) if an error has occured there will be a small screen asking you to type in you username and password once again... do this and enter the number at the bottom. This should bring you back to full status, I would suggest changing you country of origin (better to be safe than sorry). Oh and if you have the option to add favorites to your keyboard, use the URL from above so that next time your only one push of a button to the greatest website for file-sharing. If this dos'nt work for ya go to ... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/566087
there is a little more info there that might get ya going again.

When The Cria Provides a Good Product I may just purchase a CD. I refuse to purchase a CD At 20.00 which is only a rehash of the previous CD by a particular group with only 1 or 2 new tracks (songs). When the CRIA starts providing value for their customers dollars, They can talk about Piracy. Till then I, for one, will talk about FRAUD.

Yeah, I can't get into forums either but I get a different "explanation" for it. It says:

PLEASE NOTE: Your demonoid account and the forum account are SEPARATE. To access the forums, you need to register again.

As long as I can get to the torrents, I'll live without the forums! Maybe one day when I have nothing else to do, I'll waste some of my time creating another account; til then, feck it!

This has been the same for several years now...nothing new...your account to "access" the torrents and your account to join the forums have always been separate...and this is a good thing! I don't know what to think about a member who..on the one hand praises Demonoid as being the "end all...be all" must have torrent site to have access to...then freaks out and blasts the site over something totally simple as a separate registration for the forum.

I think their User agreement covers their Asses Completely and they Caved to a very idle and weak threat from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) most likely... This is a Sad Day for Us All, especially us as One of the Major contributors to Demonoid. Yes we can freely access the Demonoid website sitting here in Canada which did nothing to prevent us from Downloading Freely yet renders our constant contributions to our favourite site completely unrewarding for us as our IP addresses are now masked by TOR and Privoxy so our ratios will not reflect or efforts and therefore we will not bother… I guess the last year’s 500 GB of uploading new releases will allow us to freely download anything we want for a long time until our ratio drops to nill and we are booted off… All we can say to those in other countries who think this doesn’t affect them… THINK AGAIN!!! Not only do you loose out on our huge percentage of uploads, we will now be boycotting uploading in general and becoming what we have despised the most over the years… A hit and run leacher… NO POINT TO UPLOAD !!! So we implore you, contact Demonoid and vent your furry and frustration with their pathetic and selfish actions in folding to an unenforceable threat while living in the country that is now Harbouring their spineless persons!!! We ask you remind them of this user agreement which protects them, as your country may be next and before long these chicken s#!% jellyfish administrators will have no place to run to!!!

Fellow Canadians… Here is the best work around for accessing Demonoid:
Step 1: Download Firefox Browser from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Step 2: Install Firefox (this will be the browser you use to search and download from demonoid) if you don’t want to get firefox, Internet Explorer will work fine it just doesn’t have the on/off button for IP blocking installed right into the browser and you will have to manually configure the browser to run with the application in used in step 3

Step 3: Get the bundle from http://www.vidalia-project.net/download.php
Get the Latest Vidalia Release (26-August-2007) by looking under Stable Bundles and download the one that says 0.0.14 (sig) if you have windows

Step 4: Install to the default directory it asks you to and include all of the recommended programs (there are 4 in total and they all work together)

Step 5: Restart your computer and you will see some options in the toolbar near the clock, one that looks like a green piece of Garlic (TOR) and another that is a blue circle with a “P” inside it (Privoxy) and you can turn both of these on and off at will from here when you want to go on demonoid.

Step 6: If you chose to use firefox you should see in the bottom right corner of the browser an indication on whether or not TOR is running, you can toggle this on and off. If you don’t see the “TORbutton” in the bottom right corner of firefox see: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275 and click “install now”.
Note if you chose to use Internet Explorer instead, you will have to configure it, to view install instructions for windows see: http://tor.eff.org/docs/tor-doc-win32.html

Step 7: Go to: www.demonoid.com and sign in, this whole process will slow down your browsing as everything you see is being bounced off a volunteer server but you now have access, we suggest you go into your account and change your country listing from “Canada” to another country (like Sweden, or Norway, or maybe USA?) as who knows if they will delete the accounts listed as Canadian !!! Enjoy downloading only as uploading we do not believe will be reflected in your ratio… eventually you will get booted off for a low share ratio unless you currently have a very good ratio to play with for a while.

If anyone knows of a better work around other that logging into a proxy server every time, please share.

No need for the invite.

They have one good policy. Every month they open up the registration for may be 2-3 days. Keep trying & you WILL get lucky.

That is how I registered.

If this dos'nt work for ya go to ... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/566087
there is a little more info there that might get ya going again.

let's see - Invites to private sites

Requesting for or offering invites to private sites (such as private torrent trackers or similar private P2P sites) is not allowed. This rule has been requested by several private site administrators, and we honor their request. (Penalty: 2 day ban)

There is another - unrelated - "by invitation only" thing that made sense & made google so popular.

Up until recently google mail was by invitation only. Initially they sent out invites to their own known circles each of who had 100 invites available to them. The pyramid scheme continued but theoretically they could trace each and every account holder. You could practically be sure that no mail from any google account was spam or virus ridden. 2 major shortcomings of then popular free mail providers - Yahoo & Hotmail.

You can see the results.

In addition to the great proxy info from LILBUCK

NEW PROXY UPDATE EVERYDAY

http://www.boy.us.com/proxylist.php.

Fake IP Address

When you connect to a web site, it can see your IP address as the "Remote IP" or "Remote Address". When you surf through a proxy server, these fields contain the IP address of the proxy server instead of your own IP address. So the web site will see the address of the proxy instead of your actual address. But all non-anonymous proxies usually put the IP addresses of their clients (i.e. of the computers using those proxies) in either of the two following request headers (variables): "HTTP_CLIENT_IP" or "HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR_IP" There are no strict standards, so one proxy may be sending the IP with "Client_IP" variable and another with "X_Forwarded_For_IP".

There is not much difference between them but they are never used together - either one or the other. So, if the proxy you are using is not anonymous, the web site will be able to see you true IP address in one of these fields.Requests that are generated by anonymous servers do not have these fields (that's what makes them anonymous). The thing is that you can set A4Proxy to create these fields, and put there "fake" IP addresses (they are generated as random numbers, so they are different for each request).

As the result, the web site which you are visiting will "think" that you are visiting it through a non-anonymous proxy server (while in fact it is a truly anonymous server with an additional fake field generated by A4Proxy). Not all web sites will look for these fields (Client_IP or X_Forwarded_For_IP). However, those which do look for them will definitely be confused as the fake IP address will be different for each request. It may be a good idea to switch on one of these options (and it is not important which one). Finally, if you want a particular address to be sent to the web site in one of that field, you will need to create a modification for that field on the Browser Options tab, in addition to enabling the appropriate Simulate... option.

Because this application listing could be considered by some as spam I'm not linking to a download.. you need to google it..

Here is a listing for people worried that it may be malware http://www.auditmypc.com/process/a4proxy.asp

If you try it let us know how it goes.

Yup, the site indicates as of the last 48 hrs:

Quote:
The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.
So that’s that, it will leave a huge hole in the amount of quality content floating around in torrent form (much of which we were responsible) unless those who originally uploaded the content attached more than one tracker to the content when it was uploaded (we did not).

Furthermore Deimos (the sites only actual administrator) has turned tail himself and abandoned the Canadian market weeks ago to feeble threats at best. Therefore I suspect that after already going through this once in the Netherlands and moving here to Canada (the best country on the planet) has set up a nice little life for himself in Canada and is not about to go to another country just to rent a server and provide a debatably illegitimate operation for us simple folks.

So long to Demonoid unless Deimos can find another ISP willing to stand up to some pathetic threats by the CRIA who (despite the name) does NOT represent Canadian artists and the Canadian music industry. It is a confirmed AMERICAN association based in Canada to represent the RIAA here.

Hello!

I know that you cant' access demonoid nowadays.

Beacuse demonoid blocked some Countries, IPs and ISP to access their server.

They allowed only UK and US users to access their website. But you can still able to access it through proxies.

read this article and try that trick

Heres an update for anyone lookin.
http://torrentfreak.com/demonoid-bittorr...or-days-090901/

During the next few days, maybe hours, Demonoid may go down due to some serious-sounding technical issues. They have already caused some damage to the site so the operators want to limit further damage.

“We are experiencing power outages that have caused some ram and hard drive issues. We might have to shut down everything to fix and prevent further damage,” they say in a statement.

The downtime could be extended, “…days maybe, until we can change the power circuit,” they add.

Thanks creaky, I only checked the mini nova site once. I have not used that site in years. I was just curious to see what was up. I got nervous with mini, PB and Demon down I was beginning to wonder. Not that I actually have been doing anything in the last few months. The f@cking robot things have gotten on my nerves. They still hound me after months of inactivity.
