Apple preparing 24 million iPhone 4G units for ship

Apple preparing 24 million iPhone 4G units for ship According to a new Digitimes report, Apple plans to ship 24 million iPhone 4G units by the end of the year, with their Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn ready to ship 4.5 million in June alone.
While Apple may have giant expectations, 24 million seems over the top. Since 2007, the company has sold just over 50 million units, with three different iterations of the smartphone.

Cnet proposes that the company may be planning a large price cut on the model, which would certainly help move units. Potentially, Apple is readying a CDMA-version of the phone, which would work on Verizon, the largest phone carrier in the nation.

Confirming what Gizmodo revealed last month, Digitimes says the smartphone will have an ARM Cortex A8 processor and 512MB of memory, which is double that of the 3GS, and should give enough power to handle the multi-tasking functions of the iPhone 0S 4.0.

Additionally, new to the iPhone 4G are a front-facing camera for video conferencing, a better standard camera (including larger lens and flash), a Micro-SIM slot (just like the iPad), 960x640 resolution, a second mic, metallic exterior (not plastic) and split side buttons for volume.

If these are the specs, it's already outdated/outperformed by phones like (HTC EVO 4G, HTC Incredible, Samsung Galaxy S). Still no micro-SD, flash, or removable battery.

I don't see why not. There already are 50 million idiots (Apple zombies) out there that are constantly paying a premium just for a logo and low performance CrApple products almost every year, I can see 24 million being sold.

"Digitimes says the smartphone will have an ARM Cortex A8 processor"

That was a great CPU (before the A9 came out)...that is why Motorola used it in the droid way back in November!

Mike.M - I can list more than 100 reasons why the iPhone is better than any other smart phone. We're not paying for no logo we're paying for the simplicity and smooth functionality that no other phone has. Phones like the HTC still need to work on their programing because their crappy phones freeze every 10 seconds.

618.5.2010 07:16

I can't speak of the HTC, as I don't know what one of their phones you are refering to. I know my Moto Droid is rock solid, even after I hacked the **** out of it. As for simplicity, the droid is just as easy to use as an iPhone, probably more so because there are fewer things blocked by default. If you meant that it does not have any features, and thus you do not need to learn how to use any features, I would say that is spot on. As for the smooth functioning, the droid just does things fast...it does not slow down for a gentle fade...but I think you can get that if you were dumb enough to want it. And yes, you are paying for the logo...don't lie to yourself; you are buying it because it is made by apple, not for features, price, network, reliability, or anything else...because you are all ready to buy the iPhone 4G with iPhone OS 4.0, and no one has even tested a final production version of either; and you still don't know for sure what network(s) it will be on.

As for reliability, I think we all still remember the exploding iPhone 3GS's, and when it comes to programming, we all remember Steve Jobs saying that he does not like flash because OSX is written so poorly that a web browser add-on can crash the whole system if there is a glitch in a flash video.(Paraphrased; he wouldn't admit a problem in the middle of a recall...but he would say a whole bunch of dumb things that make the problem more obvious).

There was a time when apple was a symbol of freedom, of the little guy, of free speech, the lone freedom fighter in a world that looks like a George Orwell novel...today Microsoft seems closer to that mold than Apple, and Microsoft looks like Apple when shown next to Google, itself a huge corporation!

OH, BTW...post your list...is #1 "Will never have flash support" or is it "Limited to an Apps market controlled by a fascist with a god complex"

24 million.. so that means there will be 24 million obsolete 3G ones flooding the used market soon.

Only people I can see buying an already outmoded thing like this are people who own the outmoded predecessor.. just for the "larger penis" brag factor.

We are supposed to be trying to SAVE THE PLANETS RESOURCES!!! .. not pile more and more oil and energy into landfill.

what makes the iphone 4g a 4g phone? can it use wimax or LTE?
If so does at&t have wimax or LTE or another 4g standard? didn't think so this isn't a 4g phone ppl its an iphone 3g incremental update crapple is in for another money grab ppl are such idiots

Out dated bla bla bla... When it comes to the iPhone everybody got some kind of gripe. Mostly those that cant afford it, never tried it or are locked into a contract with a different carrier. The non flash support and the price is the only things you can really bitch about. Maybe we should wait for the new iPhone to be released before we start bashing it. 9 times out of 10 these so called news sites are wrong or they jump before they have all the facts. (I'm not speaking of Afterdawn, they just pass the news along)
Bottom line is nothing out there works like the iPhone and nothing will. I've tried almost all of them. iPad, iMac, iPod and all the other iJunk can rot for all I care but the iPhone is the only thing Apple did right. BUT if this is just another 3G to 3GS type of update I might change my tune a little. That was a joke.

I understand why everybody complains about AT&T. I did to until they recently upgraded in my area. Now I get 3G everywhere I go and I never have problems with reception. I guess it just depends on where you are. 4G is another story and remains to be seen.

Clearly Apple is trying to scam people by calling their phone the "4G". They could call it whatever they wanted...they chose to call it the 4G because that is the hot topic in mobile telecommunications right now...and every day it gets a little harder to get someone to sign a 2-year contract on a phone with no 4G capabilities (even though the networks are limited and small, and the actual speeds are well within the capabilities of 3G...assuming the cell company did not limit 3G speeds.)

Now hold on. I know the Droid is a pretty darn good phone, but the iPhone is what set the smartphone market to what it is today, and the Droid only exists because the iPhone is the benchmark that was set, otherwise we would still be stuck with Moto RAZR's in our pockets, and most of us hitting the number pad 2-3 times to text out one letter!

That being said, the iPhone is on a pretty reliable network. AT&T is NOT Sprint or T-Mobile (USA) for crying out loud! There's also a large installed base of users, and because of that, many more third party accessories, apps, support, etc. than what you may find with a competing phone.

Yes everyone now and then you do pay for that Apple logo, especially when the "yearly update" is a minor rehash of the previous hardware (*cough* 3GS *cough*). Those that want to waste their money on each and every iteration can go right ahead, but I'll stick with the consumers that update when necessary. I didn't buy Vista, I didn't get a "slim" PS2, a PSP Go, DSi or the Sega 32X for that matter.

Consumer electronics are in an age of where they are disposable and these companies can only make a buck sometimes by shilling hardware. If you're smart enough to see that, then you can just ignore the minor "update" and there's no need to poke fun at those that don't.

Curious if you've ever programmed for Flash before? It CAN crash ANY browser and it does have it's own security settings, updates and flaws. It has nothing to do with OSX itself, it's Adobe and a whole new ball game. I'm surprised they don't come under fire more often for some of their sloppiness. Just leave IE or Firefox open overnight with a Flash heavy site and see how much memory is sucked up by morning and you'll see why it's Adobe and Flash that have the problem getting their software adapated to the mobile market and not the other way around.

Flash is so bloated, it will take beefier hardware before it's a standard, much akin to the browsing experience on phones catching up to PC's today.

I have played with flash a bit, but I found it to be rather crummy, and had no use for it. None the less, there are those who are masterful with it. The problem is not that flash can crash a browser (even Firefox on Linux), the problem is that the whole OS crashes because the browser crashed! I can watch flash movies on my Droid already...and the Froyo (?released later today?) will give me 4x more speed, plus full flash support...the current hardware can handle it. As for apple support? Adobe wrote a version that runs on the iPhone 3G, but apple blocked it.

"Now hold on. I think that is a matter of opinion, one could also make the claim that the iPhone would never have been created if not for the Blackberry, that the Intel i7 would never have been created if not for the AMD Phenom, etc, etc, etc...that is how technology evolves...one company makes a good product (or at least a product that looks good), and then another makes a better product (or at least a product that looks better)...back and forth, that is the strategy behind the "4G" name...to make the product look better, when it isn't...or at least it isn't better than the Android competition that is already available, and will be getting a whole lot better as soon as they release Froyo.

BTW...I did buy the 32X, as it was not a replacement; more of an accessory...I got Sega CD too.

NP, tbh I'm not sure if the 4G is "official" yet but that's what most reports have it as. I preferred "iPhone HD" honestly.

Hahaha, I got a good chuckle out of that. Now Sega CD actually had legs to it, if not for being so darn expensive (and needing a Genesis to boot!)

I'm also sure that Flash is being blocked because of the strain it would put on AT&T's network when all of the iPhone users start going to crummy, unoptimized sites that are Flash heavy. There are alot of DHTML and HTML5 standards that can do the same things Flash does and sometimes better. Alas, Flash is still a necessary evil in some cases, and it drives me nuts to try to "optimize" anything to be useful on the web. You pretty much have to create everything in vector to succeed at it.

Ok so I said this before, I'm going to say it again since apparently a new Apple Vs Adobe debacle opens up every day here.

The reason Crapple does not support Flash is to make the people that buy their lame useless devices for an insane amount of money go and spend even more money on the App Store.

There are millions of free apps (mostly games) in flash available right now. If apple users could access those then there would be no need for the 100.000+ apps that exist.

So if you think Iphone/Ipad is better because it has more apps... FALSE with other devices you have 95% of the entertainment and functionality you get with the Apple apps except for free.

Apple has to protect their App store, they charge $100 bucks for a developer fee and then they take away 25% of your earnings. Now let's see how much Adobe gets when you make a Flash App or game and sell it... calculating...calculating... oh right, $0 dollars.

Now let's talk about that terrible strain you mention. Is this the big file size? Cause most important sites today are pretty big, like 100~150k. Everyday I get attachments that are 1~2 mb. Flash Apps are what? 400k? 700k? Is this 2010 or what? Are a bunch of 150~800k files going to destroy the AT&T network?

I live in Colombia, a so called 3rd world country. I have a Nokia E63, it's a $170 dollars phone. Flash works fine and the 3rd world country cell phone network hasn't collapsed. But according to you the almighty AT&T American network will fall apart if people actually see a bit of animation.

There's a Youtube App, so there is a whole bunch of data streamed and yet the delicate AT&T network has managed to survive, I'm quite amazed at this.

Now the facts, adobe has published the facts right here: Adobe Flash Facts

I'm not an Adobe or Flash fan, I do hate Crapple though (well their lame products, ridiculous prices and absurd policies). I know Flash has many flaws like many systems. But the facts are facts.

Crapple is trying to dishonor a very widely used system that doesn't hurt anybody. Why do they do this? To justify not supporting it so they can keep robbing users and developers with their Apps.

This has nothing to do with network strain or battery use or security holes or open software or anything else. This just has to do with Steve Jobs pocket.

Crapple says "If Flash is so good then why do we have 100.000+ Apps"... well cause you don't support Flash.

Crapple says "If Flash is so good then why do we have thousands of developers"... well again cause you don't support Flash.

Crapple says "Why would we torment our customers with unsafe, memory hogging, battery killing software"... well cause your customers are adult paying consumers, not toddlers who need protection from Farmville, get over yourself Steve Jobs and let people choose what they want.

Oh about security, let's talk about that. If you read the facts you will see that "Flash Player had the second lowest number of vulnerabilities of all Internet technologies listed (which included both web plug-ins and browsers)".

Now let's see Crapple, I read at the end of last year that Safari was the browser with more vulnerabilities. If we talk just about desktop then Firefox was the worst, but if you include Safari and Safari mobile then Crapple is the worst.

I also read that in recent hacker competitions, nothing is cracked faster than an Iphone and an Imac.

So if you think using and Apple product is safe, think again.

I still need to look into HTML5 some more, cause as far is I know HTML5 does video (not very good I might add. I changed my Youtube account to use HTML5 and most of the time I couldn't control the video, had to change back to Flash which works perfect. And this was using Google Chrome).

Apart from that I don't see how HTML5 barely resembles the amazing things you can do in Flash. I would like to know though.

Games through the app store are optimized and a mostly work really well as for flash games some don't even run or play that well on a desktop games need to have a control scheme that works so at the moment I'm enjoying various games which hand on heart surpass what I've played on my psp and with my jailbreak better than that on flash so just let the sales do the speaking as the app store requires no expertise to use and gives out good quality games/apps that has to be said WORK
