Google will officially launch Android 3.0 Honeycomb on February 2nd

Google has confirmed it will be officially launching Android 3.0 Honeycomb at a press event on February 2nd.
The company also unveiled the new logo for the operating system (pictured).

Android 3.0 is optimized for tablets and will first be seen on the Motorola Xoom, which should be available at the end of February.

The SDK for Honeycomb was released earlier in the week, which PCM says includes a UI framework for creating great apps for larger screen devices; high-performance 2D and 3D graphics; support for multicore processor architectures; rich multimedia; new types of connectivity; and enhancements for enterprise.

At least 5 Honeycomb tablets have already been promised for the Q1, although none have been priced yet.

Xoom is decent, has dual Tegra 2 chips with GPU too, so it should do well if you can get past the sticker price (about $700-800). Verizon is offering it subsidized at around $200 at last announcement, but that may change when they launch.

I really hope that phone makers that didn't want to do the work to go from 2.2 to 2.3 will go ahead and update to 3.0.
