PS3 hacker's home raided, Sony sues after he retaliates

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 25 Feb 2011 3:05 User comments (55)

PS3 hacker's home raided, Sony sues after he retaliates On the 23rd, hacker "graf_chokolo" said his home was raided by local police, as well as a Sony representative.
Says graf via his own blog:

Guys, SONY was today at my home with police and got all my stuff and accounts. So be careful from now on.

After the raid, graf (Alexander Egorenkov), uploaded all his databases to the Web, encouraging anyone and everyone to share it so Sony would have a harder time removing it.

Sony did not take that action lightly, sending a legal notice demanding all the links be removed and Egorenkov pay a 750,000 euro fine.

Egorenkhov posted some final comments today:

You know guys, you will say i’m totally crazy now, but i never slept better than in the last 2 days I don’t know how to explain this feeling but i don’t care about those threats with jail and high money penalties, btw, SONY wants about 750.000 euros from me if i don’t cooperate They don’t know me at all I don’t care about it and they might double it The higher is the sum the higher gets my motivation They don’t understand what makes me tick. Money and even my life doesn’t mean to me very much without knowledge. I have a scientific mind and the knowledge is food to my brain. Without HV, Linux and FreeBSD kernel hacking my life is meaningless.

I miss my HV terribly In the last 2 days i got so “hungry” for more knowledge that i cannot control it anymore. I need knowledge and research, it has a huge meaning in my life. Jail or even death cannot hold it back anymore.

The SONY’s laywer asked me why i’m doing what i’m doing, because of my hatred for SONY ? He cannot understand why i’m doing it, because he is paid for what he does. I’m not. I don’t hold a grudge against SONY even now Hatred clouds your mind, keeps you from more important things. I have a better use for my mind and knowledge

So, SONY you failed again, you took my equipment but my mind is still free and you canot control it. You failed again. They are just tools, i can get new ones and will continue my HV reversing and bringing back PS3 Linux which you took from us. If you want me to stop then you should just kill me because i cannot live without programming, HV and Linux kernel hacking You know who am i and where i live, so come and get me !!!

And to prove it, i will reopen right now my HV reverse engineering page And i will post my latest findings about Update Manager and BD drive here. Most of you know already that i was able to update CORE OS from Linux. And on the last weekend i tries to hel some PS3 devs with BD drive authentication and discovered some interesting stuff about it which i will post here.

this is getting pretty bad, I hope this all gets settled, sony started this, and it just keeps going downhill. :/

225.2.2011 15:31

I can't believe they had local authorities go into his house and take all his stuff away. What if it wasn't being used for hacking? And to have a Sony rep there! That just seems a little over bored. When the police have a search warrant and go to your house they don't bring the person with them that made that search warrant possible, at least that's what it seems like on t.v. I'm not a cop so I don't know how it really works.

This all just seems a little over board and Sony needs to grow up and stop suing everyone and everything. Someone needs to open an account, link it to a rock in the desert, and see if Sony will sue it. I bet they would.

325.2.2011 15:40

I really don't understand why companies try to sue normal people for thousands of dollars as if they will ever get paid even close to a quarter of it. Just doesn't make any sense. As for Sony, their just continuing to show how dumb they are, Microsoft is a bigger corporation than Sony and you don't see them going around suing everyone who has modded their systems. All they seem to be good for these days are bad decisions.

But I have to give that guy credit, he has some balls to no give a you know what and continue what he's doing. Its pretty fu*cked up that we spend our money on a ps3 and by law it still belongs to sony(Or at least thats what it says in their agreement).

Wow! Now THERE is a hacker w/ no life.

525.2.2011 16:03

Society doesn't include everyone...by choice, by situation, or by design.

Saying he has no life is an opinion...he just doesn't have your life or maybe what society would call a "normal" life. He's living life the way he wants to live it. I'm not going to criticize.

I wish him well. A $ony rep there at the guy's house is a bit strange.......Maybe that is allowed where he lives. It would appear $ony has a serious problem and by trying to keep everyone quiet they, $ony, might try to use force. It reminds me of the DirecTV cards. They got aggressive and it kind of went away.

725.2.2011 19:14

I kinda feel bad for this guy, as long as he didn't make any money off this, there's no reason for him to get sued. Even if people paid him so he can install Linux on their PS3 (since Sony is being a b***h, what's the big deal really? He's just someone who likes technology. A lot of people are anyways, but at least this guy believes in freedom to do what he wants. You don't see that often anymore.

Not even Microsoft gone to this hi jinx on the 360 hacking...or even did sony go this far to PSP Hacking THIS IS TOO Fraking far!

925.2.2011 20:34

Maybe Sony should hire him instead of making him an enemy, he obviously knows what he's doing (hard/software wise).

Possibly a little correction, he use to have balls, Sony took them too, only thing the guy had left worth anything :)

It is nice to see these guys fighting back...if they have broken any laws, then they were unjust laws to begin with...and they are the same laws that sony has broken countless times.

Sony was the original pirate company; they pushed VHS as a means of pirating movies and TV shows, and even advertised that the technology was intended for piracy of TV shows. Then they went to court to defend the right to do so, and won. They won based on the fact that not everyone used their VCR for piracy...and now they are suing based on the assertion that every jailbroken PS3 is being used for piracy, when that is clearly not the case...and in fact, the percentage of jailbroken PS3s running pirated games is much lower than the percentage of VCRs used to pirate TV and movies.

All the while, they are making windows PCs that are ideal for piracy right out of the box, they are selling DVD and BluRay burners plus the blank media. How often do you think a blank BluRay gets a home movie instead of a backup of a commercial one? If it is illegal to sell something that enables piracy, then Sony needs to shut down most of their operations.

I understand you're referring to VCRs, however it was the Betamax that sony was pushing. But your argument is true and valid nonetheless.

1526.2.2011 05:21

Oh no! A few dozen whiny people might boycott Sony. I'm sure they're scared. :-)

1626.2.2011 06:13

Yeah...they don't even care that they are looking at a 1-4 billion dollar settlement if they loose the OtherOS case; if they did, they would not be contradicting themselves in court just to try to attack geohot.

1726.2.2011 08:19

Like any other big business they know that if there is enough money thrown at a "problem" they will have the backing of any government/authority. It's obscene to see how $ony is going about things. I cannot see why they are going to waste millions of dollars fighting a losing battle. Can they not just be happy seeing how long it took to "hack" their system. And, until they took away linux there was little to no issues. Instead of listening to their consumers they flipped the bird, and are going music industry on everyone.

1826.2.2011 09:25

Wow...I guess I am both angered $ony is allowed to take it this far and saddened this guy is willing to let them ruin his life just to take one for the team...

I hate to say this guys but you are only 18 people's opinion of millions and this guy should be made an example of. I don't think the amount is just but he has ruined Sony's reputation with the online community. Online game-play with the PS3 is ruined because these so called messiahs of ps3 hacking community. I have not even logged in to multi-player since it happened. The cheating scene was already bad enough with just lag switches now its just not even worth it. These people have dampened Sony's profit margin. Also before any trolls start posting any response's I realize Sony does not directly profit from online multi-player for the most part but it does affect the bottom line of game sales when directly related to their online experience. These abilities for using home-brew have way mores cons than pro's. I for one say buy a computer and quit trying to make a game console a pc. If your that cheap sale your playstation and buy a computer quit ruining it for everyone else.

i have a hacked PS3 Does that make me a cheater? No. does it tempt me to cheat? No. Am i about to start? No. its called respect for the gaming community. and some have no respect for anything or anyone. so please quit trying to bunch us all up into a demograph, lets leave that to Sony.

also comparing the PS3 to PC is like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford 4x4. the PS3 has one of the most powerful computational Processors many have every seen and at around 300 bucks. i for one want to see what it can really do, even if it means cracking the system wide open.

2126.2.2011 15:57

I am so tired of hearing people whine that these hackers caused all the cheating on PSN...Sure they enabled it but $ony has done NOTHING to stop it. So the criminal gets a gun and starts shooting people...sure at first we could be pissed at whoever is responsible for giving him the gun but at some point we're going to get pissed if the cops do nothing to stop them.

$ony had to know it was just a matter of time and as others said some cheating has been going on for some time. The longer you guys whine about those rotten hackers the more time $ony can sit back on their fat asses and do NOTHING about it...

That really isn't fair to Sony, i'm not taking any side i would never own a console and can careless either way. But you can't blame Sony for not preventing someone from hacking or exploiting a PS3. Either way whatever comes of this needs to be fair to all parties involved. Sony could be like Microsoft & the XBox, if Microsoft detects you modified you box and connect, you won't be able to get on Live, if they don't brick you box first then disconnect you.

Yeah well that makes you one of the cheapskates I was talking about. The fact of the matter is if you can't afford a awesome computer then you probably are not inclined to do any actual hacking, coding or anything necessary to back up what you are saying. I also believe that if you where you would realize that a operating system be it linux or otherwise does not exist to actually capitalize on the performance gain of a cell processor or else it would actually already be a offering in the pc market. The people who made these hacks realized what all would happen when they started their project and should sleep in the bed that they made. You saying that its not the hackers fault that online play is ruined is like saying that the nazi soldiers are not responsible for all the genocide just because they where following orders.

Once again your gleaming ignorance is blushing red, They do have cell based computer's there usually used in top of the line servers $3000+, And guess what Linux is the only operating system that runs them at all.

that is just about the stupidest comparisons i've ever seen, nobody is going to blow the hackers brains out or murder his entire family because he didn't follow orders. which is what happened during the entirety of the Nazi Regime.

let me ask you this. if the console never had to be hacked and cheater surfaced anyway who would you blame?

there was on article on here saying sony are gonna be removing/blocking hacked consoles from PSN as hacking the system violates the terms and conditions.

all this guy is doing is finding ways to control/modify software/hardware.yes some of his methods may lead to piracy.knowledge in the wrong hands can have bad results.

someone working for sony shouldnt be able to enter your premises.even if police have a search warrent.

btw what is normal these days???

Most of the scene is not rich...many cannot afford a $10,000 IBM Cell Server, and the few who can would rather get essentially the same thing but with less memory for $300 (still more than it costs to build). On top of that, a game or app that only runs on $10,000 IBM servers wouldn't be useful to many people, would it? ...But what about an MKV player that runs on a device that was sold with the claims that it would work as a media player? That just might be useful.

Yes, the authors knew that doing research to return the illegally removed features would enable others to enable piracy, but they had no choice...there was no other legal way to do it (using Sony code would have been illegal). Anyway, it isn't like they invented piracy or something...with the exception of PS exclusives, everything was already pirated and playing online on every other platform. Saying that you want to stop piracy by going after PS3 hackers is like saying that you want to preserve the integrity of a wall that has crumbled to dust, by shooting the guy who finds one solid brick somewhere under all the rock powder.

As for online cheating, that had always been there, even on the PS3, even before the jailbreak. The games change, the methods change, even the platforms change, but there are always people exploiting the holes in a game to cheat online. Sony claiming that they can do nothing about this when PC games do things about this is just BS.

Sony was allowed on the raid onto someone's private premises? Participate in removing property? And then allowed to ask the guy asinine questions? And then allowed to hand out a 3/4 million fine? WTF?

Tell me Andre, where the hell was this? Sonyville? Cloud cuckoo land?

And pardon my ignorance but what is his HV?

The guy sounds like he has a touch of asperger's. Still people should be allowed to do what they want with the device if they bought it. Sony can make claims about "Terms and conditions" but that's toothless depending on the laws of the various countries. I know people that want to use them for render farms.

I feel a rather sorry for the dude, I believe that Sony intend to make an example of him and make his life a living hell.

It won't matter how guilty or within his rights he is, Sony will do a Scientology number on him. That is, abuse the legal system, hound him till he has nothing. He will be sucked into never ending court appearances, fees etc.

It's rather depressing, to top it off, it will do absolutely nothing to deter other hackers. the only winners will be the lawyers.

This ain't TV land... it's real life, and these people need to understand that, if you want to hack stuff and it going to cause said company lose cash and want to play with the big boys, you'll need to be ready to get turfed big time too.

It's not always fun and games and no one cares.

The stuff he is doing is completely reverse engineering the Play station OS and really... whats the point? of doing that.

It has nothing to do with bringing back Linux on a play station, it's simply someone trying to completely screw over the OS and make their own system that plays play station games and what ever else.

These are sold as game consoles not Linux boxes.

Just tell them to buy the Cell chip servers they are designed to handle that stuff as you can get them with a few gig or more ram etc

Even duel Cell servers as well.

Bit silly trying to convert a PS3 into a render farm when you can buy something that will do the job a billion times better.

I just can't see how rendering a 1080P frame that's 30gigs of data will work in a memory space of 256meg of ram, on a box that isn't even designed to handle rendering farm duties.

But the original version WAS sold and advertised as running Linux... Removal of features after purchase is even worse than falsely advertising it in the first place, Sony deserve to be lynched.

I personally haven't given a cent to Sony for about 10 years. I suggest everyone else boycott them too, they've screwed too many people for too long.

And by the way, what is with blaming the hackers for the actions of cheaters? Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people.

That's the whole purpose of a cluster (doesn't matter if it's a render farm or not). It only needs enough memory to handle the chunk of data it's doing at any given time, not the whole job, and it's not a question of if the machine was designed for something, but if the software exists to do it.

@Xtago - I think everyone here supports Sony banning PS3's found to be running custom firmware from the PSN for precisely the reasons you mention. If anyone expects to hack their PS3, they should be ready to be banned. Microsoft's been doing it for years.

Personally, I love the fact the PS3 has been hacked wide open. It means there will be a use for these boxes well beyond Sony's schedule to junk them. The earlier they're hacked the better because people have a much more mature platform to build on while interest is hot. It seems the PS2 didn't start getting apps till later in life and they didn't mature very well. The media players for my PS2 were pretty substandard and none of the FTP servers were very good because none seemed to have security. With the PS3 being mostly built on a linux platform, I expect to see much higher quality applications than what existed in the homebrew scene for the PS2. I'd still be using an XBox as a XBMC frontend if they had HDMI.

I paid $500 for my ps3 when I got it. I should be able to do whatever I want with it. If sony wants to try to stop us from hacking our ps3s then thats fine. If they want to give security updates that is fine. If they want to ban hacked consoles from connecting to PSN thats fine too..thats how its always been.. remember with the xbox 1? But they should NOT be going after the people who make it possible to hack these things. We do this as a hobby.

I have a hacked ps3 and I will never try to get on PSN. Why? Because its hacked and I know that I can get banned. To me its not worth it to lose my PSN. If I ever wanna go on PSN I will undo the hack on my ps3.

I think all of us hackers should stay off PSN. Call it a trade-off.

ps: one thing that pisses me off is how I have to connect to PSN to go on Netflix. I hope someone makes a workaround to that.

All of this and still, Sony >>>> Micro$oft. What sony is doing is still better than M$ knowingly selling their paperweight 360s.

I'm better with the fact that i lost other OS on my $500 PS3 and it still works after 5+ years, than if I had gone through 3-4 $300-$400 360s during that time.

You saying that its not the hackers fault that online play is ruined is like saying that the nazi soldiers are not responsible for all the genocide just because they where following orders.
and uh oh dear leader ... how many cell architecture computers do you have? Hmmm ... ZERO? Your 5000usd computer can't hold a candle to the amount of data a true cell can rummage through. Hmmm ... ZERO? So How on earth would you even know that linux/other os won't scream running one? Why the fk would it even have to be linux or other os? The fact here is YOU DON'T KNOW... nobody knows .. we are just at the tip of the iceburg with cell capabilities. so go back in your hole while people like myself try and work with other folks like me ... then maybe after we get the cell streamlined for everyone and everyday use you can go spend your 5grand and build a cell-based computer/ps3 on our backs...and get the parts from newegg.

Your comparison to price is totally meaningless ... actually very immature and idiotic. You don't compare gasoline to diesel.

While your PC sounds like a jet turbine and burns up ever-growing amounts of coal ... us cheapskates help bring new technology to the masses ..in ways never even thought of.

Lastly ... youre that guy that can't think past the gate or out of the box if you will ... your type could have never envisioned a simple webcam (kinect) is capable of finding lost people in mountains... damn cheapskates ..why not spend a billion dollars on helicopters and such. go away edited by ddp

LOL, I'll take the Ford 4x4 over the ferrari anyday, and if I was given one, I would sell it and buy several Ford 4x4's

I personally haven't given a cent to Sony for about 10 years. I suggest everyone else boycott them too, they've screwed too many people for too long.

And by the way, what is with blaming the hackers for the actions of cheaters? Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people.

Good post, I also have not bought a damn thing sony after that rootkit scandel hid on thier cd's on everyone.

I love it. I understand exactly how he feel. Sometime you just have to stand up. No more excuses.

515.3.2011 01:40

I am just a regular guy that plays games at times and bought the PS3 for the game console and the BR Player. I used to swear by Sony products but after they stole my Other O/S I stopped buying anything Sony TradeMarked or marketed otherwise. Sony has lost a good customer for life by insulting me by thier blantant theft of my property and justifying it with open accusations that we are all hackers and thieves like themselves.

Boring statement that holds no truth, should we still go on about the YLOD? No, because its sorted now, as is the 360 overheating problem. Give it a rest fanboy.
