Rumor: Apple to finally kill off iPod Shuffle, Classic The latest rumor is that Apple is finally prepared to kill of their iPod Shuffle and Classic.
Says TUAW: "Obviously we can't divulge our source, but it is NOT an analyst."

Additionally, an updated iPod Touch will be coming later this year, say the sources.

There have been rumors of the iPod's demise for years now but this time they might be on to something. iPod sales now only account for 5 percent of Apple's net income, down from 10 percent in 2010, and overall sales are in continued decline (check the chart, via Time).

Furthermore, if Apple kills off the two models, the more expensive Nano and Touch will remain, which will boost income (or at least keep it steady for the time being).

Do I smell a fire sale?

It is apple...they would rather burn them and breathe the toxic smoke than sell something for a good price. That said, they might cut the price in half so they only cost about twice what they are worth.

That's about the best description of Apple's insufferable, elitist, customer-hostile attitude that I've ever heard. Great job!

Yes indeed, I looked at getting a reasonably big 160gb iPod classic to hook up to my hi-fi receiver etc, thinking that they have been out so long that the prices must have come down to something fair, boy was I in for a shock.

So for less money I ended up getting 2 x 2tb Western Digital Elements hard drives and a Western Digital HD TV Live (the WD TV unit admittedly was on a deal).
Far greater flexibility, vastly more space and it does the whole multi-media thing so much better, the visual as well as audio.

No sale Apple and no suprises why.
I prefer to spend my cash on competence & ability, not the ludicrous 'label' some ludicrous d**kheads seem to go for.

Apple will never firesale. They are good business people. Firesale (or even sale) immediately lowers the value of the product in consumer's minds.

And, of course, that is quite apart from Apple's attitude in the minds of many if not most consumers, which is that of sellers of over-hyped, over-rated and over-priced Chinese-made gadgets.

they will never have fire sale, when have they ever had anything sale UNLESS they coming out with the next generation? crapple is p.o.s

Milked those cows for a while.

I agree about Apple not lowering the price too much if at all. It is not their nature.

Funny how those who speak for 5-10% or so of people CLAIM to speak for a majority!

Speak up man!

It is a point of view not the absolute.

Apple fanboys speak your peace.

I hate Apple's guts but own their stock. I am please to see the clairity of the respondants. I still expect to see some defenders.

I suspect a different motive. The crappy HDs don't last till the experation date and the vendors can't be made to do better. The returns have been eating into the general profits. They may not be making any real money on the disked players. That is why they are pulling the plug.

If you hate Apple, but own their stock; you must have a really low opinion of humans and society.

Good call!

Why? I don't like Apple they are amoral scum but I like money or at least what money can buy. I do admire that they seem to be the only company of that size that actually are not run by total nitwits. Compare this well thought out money conserving action to M$ who proposing you log into Win8 using the internet. I have not typed any IDs or passwords on the internet for over a year. I guess I am not buying W8.

Maybe you are right about me. I look at who we vote into office to make our laws and have to drive our roads. I guess we are all morons! Me included. AD members seem to be smarter than the average moron.

The more I think on it, the more I agree with you. Humans are our worst enemy! We have put our selves up as 'gods' here to 'fix the earth'. Look what we are doing to it, with all the best intentions.

We have the power to change the world but not a lick of wisdom do do it wisely.
