Ruling on Galaxy Tab ban in Australia likely next week

An Australian judge may rule on Apple's request for a preliminary injunction barring sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 next week.
Since April of this year, Apple has waged a campaign of lawsuits around the world seeking to ban the sales of various Samsung products, claiming they infringe on touch screen patents and "slavishly copy" designs for the iPhone and iPad.

It was speculated the ruling could come this week after arguments were wrapped up on Tuesday. According to Reuters, it is now expected next week, perhaps as early as Monday.

Last week Samsung offered a temporary licensing agreement with Apple which would have allowed them to release the tablet with minor modifications, but still utilizing some of the disputed technology. Apple turned down the deal, saying they prefer to "maintain the status quo."

Reactions to a Q3 earnings estimate released today illustrate just how important the tablet and smartphone markets are to Samsung. Strong sales in those categories have partially offset reduced revenue from displays and memory by the electronics giant.

One analyst told Reuters, "I think Samsung's telecom business was a big positive surprise, and other businesses fared better than expected."

Ironically, Apple's long awaited iPhone announcement earlier this week has also bolstered faith in Samsung's phone business. Many analysts are already disappointed with the iPhone 4S, and believe it gives Samsung an opening to further increase their market share.

Speculation aside, it's worth noting iPhone owners have historically shown intense brand loyalty. Even if they decide not to buy the new iPhone, that may not translate into sales for the competition.

Still, it may give Samsung an advantage in attracting first time smartphone buyers or convincing current Android handset users not to stick with the platform.

I love Samsungs Led tvs but i would never trade my iphone 4, any iphone for any SG X, i hate the cheap plastic used in the build and there is nothing attractive for me in Android OS, no to mention my ipad 2.

haha, ok just keep using your cheap... Antenna, poor UI from 2007, single core phone, small screen... Its funny how some people think, even though you pay more for that phone, still cheaper to make an iphone than most androids... So, what really is cheap here? You paying more for being a moron!

I always thought anyone on afterdawn either didn't care for apple products or was indifferent about em. I'm shocked to finally see someone who likes apple products on this site. Luckily, even though I have an iPhone i can still appreciate the many benefits of the other operating systems, and realize that my phone has faults like any other.

Not trying to start a war or anything. But you should know that the same exynos chip in the galaxy s2 is the same chip that powers the iPhone 4S. Just that samaung's has their chips clocked higher, while apple underclocks them to make room for stuff like dual core graphics. Not that either is inefficient, just the way it is. So I wouldn't say samsung is an all copy from apple since apple uses their chips. Again Im not trying to start some flame war, just wanted to clarify.

What I find funny is.

A) smart phones have been out since the mid 90's using the UIQ OS by Symbian, which Nokia bought out but they did shut down UIQ OS, I think it's a notch above these current smart phone OSes.

You also have the WinMobile OS as well, clunky but works ok and always been a smart phone OS.

Both have been out at least 10 years before the iOS even got released.

The Iphone populatrty isn't from the phone or the device it's been the Apple store where you can buy stuff and dump it straight onto the Ipod/iphone/ipad/itouch as none of these devices would have taken off as there was far better devices out before Apple devices.

B) The IPhone were made by Samsung using Samsung tech, it's only been this year Apple have been trying hard to move that tech away from Samsung.

So you saying Samsung devices are bad is you simply saying Apple devices are poor.

I have a Galaxy S myself and I show Iphone users and they keep asking if the iphone can do the samethings, or I say their screen is tiny which it is.

I do have access to iphone 4 but the people who own them want android phones.

So Apple screwing customers around isn't good for their image really.

Wow. Those first comments, my already dwindling intelligence has just bottomed out trying to keep up with that.

Thanks Pluto! I think it's hilarious that (I just don't know how else to refer to it, don't really mean anything by it) fanboys always say these kinds of things when Samsung is responsible for so much of the hardware in Apple devices.

Although there is one tiny thing I will begrudgingly agree with from lancer, and that is the plastic on the SGS's. They're so light I'd be afraid to even use it as a paperweight lol but that's a great thing for some people. I just like a bit of weight and solidity to my devices; the hardware is still just fine.

And lancer, think about it man. "Ooooohhh poor little baby is crying cos Apple is kicking the butt to his shitty los quality product boohu boohu, go cry to mamma kid! Lol what a retard." "POV? you mean POS? xD"
and last of all "Shut up! i dont understand what is it with you mods and the need to show power to people, be humble and ask things nicely" Is this how you act and speak in real life? If so, my condolences to your family and friends (if you have any). You could try following your own bit of advice in that last post and show a bit of humility and especially respect for fellow individuals. Could go for you as well i1der, as the flames of the first post were far too apparent; be the bigger man (of course I've no idea of age, but still).

**Oh, and as for the topic, I hope Samsung can do something about all this. I think it's pretty deplorable that one company that uses another's manufactured tech can sue that other company and stop sales of their devices, though the tech company must, by law, continue selling that tech to the first company at "reasonable" prices. What happens when the contracts are up and no other tech companies are willing to be bent over like that? Apple pissing in their own canned soup.
