If you have obtained a .mp4 video file, then you have an MPEG-4 video file. These files are of high quality at low bitrates and low resolutions, which is why they have been chosen for video in many portable video players such as an Apple video iPod or Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) console.

To play these files properly you can use a variety of software. iTunes plays these files, as it has to since it will transfer them to your iPod. If not an iTunes fan, try Media Player Classic.
