Wii outselling PS3 and Xbox 360 combined in North America

16 June 2007 13:16 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 50 comments

Wii outselling PS3 and Xbox 360 combined in North America According to the latest NPD sales figures, the Nintendo Wii continues to dominate the North American market, with Nintendo selling more consoles than both Sony and Microsoft combined.

During the month of May, 338,000 Wii consoles were sold, compared to 155,000 Xbox 360s and only 82,000 PlayStation 3s. The Nintendo DS did even better, moving 423,000 units during the month. The Sony gaming handheld, PSP, sold 221,000 units mainly thanks to a recent price cut. The PlayStation 2 continued to sell well, pushing 188,000 units for the month.

Overall, console sales rose 79 percent during the month to hit $221 million USD.

the 360 is a 1.5 system last time I checked it is a slightly upgraded Xbox with a 3 core CPU that no one has seemed to used yet because multi threading has not been perfected.

The the WII is a 1.5 system as well mostly because they didn't adding power onto it however the power it has is more than enough and worth every penny compared to the 360 and the PS3 that each have so many little issues its not even funny.

The is showing gaming dose not need graphics I wish however it would start putting more effort into game control, for a system thats supposedly centered around it its on shaky grounds still.

I completely disagree. The wii is more next gen than the PS3 and the xbox 360 IMO.

Whats next genaration about two consoles which only have better graphics. I mean theres nothing new about that at all. If all new consoles did where get better graphics then can you imagine how boring games would get?

The wii is a revoloution! The wii's new and is the next generation of consoles!

Yeah? since when did the PS3 and 360 only have better graphics. did you read up on Blu-ray, Internet Browsing, Chatting, Linux(meaning you can install other operating systems such as Fedora Core 5, and Yellow dog. obviously Windows wont be available seeing as it is a Microsoft program and microsoft competes with sony.) All these other options which add up to a lot more than a different type of controller and a couple trips to the hospital(lol, read up on "Wii Injuries")
Also, don't forget that "next gen" does not only imply better graphics. There are imrovments in A.I., the number of items on screen at once, and sound processing for example. I have a 360 and a Wii. I have said before that Wii games generally look dated when compared to the other systems. With the typical lifespan of a system being 4-5 years, the games will look positively retro in 3-4 years. IMO this demonstrates a lack of forward thinking by this company. No support for HD resolution? After playing the 360 in 1080p I absolutely appreciate that crispness. Another example is the sound processing of the Wii, i.e. no surround sound only psuedo-surround with dolby PLxII. I'm not Wii bashing, I love the system. However, I think Nintendo could have done a bit more to make the gaming experience more immersive and improve the longevity of the console.

gaming is not about power the very fact its been stuck there the last 7 years should have shown you the light if you want to kill 2 or 3 grand on a new HD setup that will be replaced in 5 years when they stabilize the industry standard then prehaps you have other issues to deal with than whining about power.

The WII is made for this conscious era between going Hdef and being just normal def get it and understand it while it might lose ground on power it dosent have to waste so much of it to look pretty so AI and physics are not going to suffer that greatly, the WII is also about a new control scheme something the other 2 can not get off of however I will admit its not prefect and feels tacted onto some games however no console is without issues with its first year(the PS3 has double issues no games and to damn costly..but your a Hdefer you blow a grand every other month keeping up appearances :P).

Um, the PS2 has been out for about... say... six years, and is outselling the 360, which has been out for a year and a half or so.

What does 360 have in terms of gameplay that Xbox didn't? The controller is the same, the core games are the same, the online is *pretty much* the same. At least PS3 modified the controller to be more interactive.

Um ok mate! Yeh whatever you say! Your not blind are you? Or happen to be a sony fb?

Xbox controller was, badly shapped, balck and white buttons were bad! Now the 360, have u held one, its amazing, fits perfect! RB, LB nice additions. And triggers again, but better pressure sensetivity! The XBOX Home button! and also its wireless!

Ps2, was a ps1 controll but different colour!
Ps3 controller is again a lighter version of the ps2 controller, with the motion sensor idea from nintendo and guess what pedals(for Sony FB's its the so called tiggers) which heck are pointless the touch sensetivity is stupid, and the lovley hoem button, oh wait FROM THE 360! wireless aswell, but everythign is wireless now!

Do not start on controllers and call the 360 the same as xbox and then say the ps3 is soo much different to the ps2 one! Know ur facts, ahve u even seen a 360 controller! Get some glasses mate , cause ur bloody blind!

Then the obvious solution would have been to just come out with a better controller, rather than a whole new console. ;)

the dual shock was innovative or at least a good design the sticks could be stiffer tho, the PS3 pad is a joke complete with tilt and play tech from the GB color days and the Xboxs trigger buttons which IMO suck.

the 360 pad is a proper pad not the abstract Xbox S type they should have had the W/B buttons as shoulder buttons from the start,I forget if they have better touch sensitivity than the Xbox if they are stiffer great it means one can put it to use,the sticks are nice and stiff still better than what sony offers for a first party controller.

Unlike the PS3 pad thats almost tossed together with out ideas the 360s pad evolved to be a nice control pad.

The Wiis mote and numb chuck is a bit short sighted on the buttons needed also its more gimmicky then it needs to be it really needs to be 2 numb chucks with 2 or 3 buttons around the sticks but I will settle for more comprehensive control scheme's.

I think whether you like the graphics or not, the way you interface with the WII is the reason it is outselling both systems. It is the direction gaming needs to go. Maybe the PS5 or the XBOX 1080 will be controlled by body movement and seen through VR headsets. Button mashing is so "NES track & field".

Damn Zippy. That's harsh. My point was not only crisper visuals but also the power to render more items onscreen at once, better sound, more colors, etc. These things, as well as the new interface scheme, would provide a more interactive experience. Cripes! I had a $30 graphics card in my old computer that could output 1360x768 resolution with anti-aliasing and all the bells and whistles. I think the Wii HAS the power for HD visuals but the designers did not give us the option to use that setting. Therefore, that implies to me a lack of forethought. Also, given that new HD sets are the fastest growing segment of the consumer electronics market, not to mention that in 2009 all new sets will be required to have digital tuners, I'm sure I'm not the only person wishing the Wii had a higher output resolution. Sure, in 5 years I will need to upgrade some gear but then there will be a new Wii by then, won't there?

Surround sound has become a standard. In the days of cartridge based systems, space on the memory was at a premium, hence the dolby psuedo surround. Now were using DVDs as the software medium, plenty of room. I remember the days of golden axe on the Sega Genesis, two or three enemies onscreen at once and there was so much slow down the game was almnost unplayable at times. Now we have massive onscreen battles with dozens of enemie onscreen at once. That's part of what increased processing power can do. It's not all about better graphics for me but a better experience. I love my Wii (lol) and will continue to play it faithfully, just wish there were a few upgrades.

Sorry to give you the bad news Zippy but the "industry standard" is never stable and is always improving. That's just how it is with technology. There's no sense to wait 5 years just to buy a new HDTV since it will again be outdated 5 to 10 years down the road. If it's not improvements in resolution it's better contrast ratios, better color depth or color reproduction, etc.

When I get a new HDTV I don't think that this will be the last HDTV that I'll buy. I just enjoy what I have right now for as much as I can. But I also have an eye out for the new improvements that come out. If I see something that's worth upgrading to then I just save up again and upgrade.

Heck, my mate has a wii, we play that whenever i go over hsi hosue or when hye comes to mine, 360 is for more solo gaming with its amazing onlien playing. Wii is the usual nintendo aimed game consol for evryoen to ahev a great time, heck i still play my N64! and not my ps1 because N64 is multi player with 4 controllers!

Nintendo has taken a the same path int eh consol battle, and frankly as much as i love my 360, M$ and SOny don't relaise that party play togeterh is more impiortant then online play!

besides no matter what the tech is I aint spending more than 300 on a TV/monitor. ,and blocky LCD/Digital is not a option.....

theres no point to make the switch yet priveVcost(price below 350,cost=quality) is not there yet and carts still provide as good or better life and picture.

You shouldn't even be in this topic of conversation, you obvisouly have no clue what u are on about demanding price cuts from the wii.

Why are you ranting about controllers? Who cares about the controllers. And the home button was created by Sony on the PSX. And the PSP has the home button and it came out before the 360, so saying "and the lovley hoem button, oh wait FROM THE 360!" is false.
