FINALLY the HD burners are comming out! I will wait a year and see what the price is then.

bet it will be 800 to 900 bucks, i don't see them getting any less expensive than 500 dollars for the next few years

Its going to be tough for Blueray discs get into the main stream of "media backups" because the price is so high. As a corporate IT guru, Harddrives are so cheap now that they are now one of the cheapest ways to backup all your media. If BD disks come down to say $5 a pop...then they would take off as a good choice. Most companies only need to keep their backups for 6-12 months anywayz...so BD Rot shouldn't matter.

...but the price...WOW....not for me....not for a long time. Corporate greed could make this technology sit on a shelf next to the blank beta tapes. All depends which way the consumers/music/porn industry chooses...HD or BD.

I have no choice to wait it out. I've been burnt before. Not this time.

......and BD media (especially DL media) is wildly expensive right now too.

i agree with mightyone on this one...
there is no need right now for BD for back-up when you can get a 320GB HD for 75$ US just not worth it.

Are you an idiot, the scale is not the same as with a dvd, burning will take far less than an hour.

50GB at 155Mbps is 46 Minutes 1.68 Seconds
so at 144 it should take about 56 or at the most 1:20 hour,the reason why Hdvd is not an hour is its a max of 30GB I could be wrong but HDVD is 36 per 1X so 36 X 4 is 144 even if it was 170 your still looking at 30 min per disc.

Come on people lets focus on how crappy both formats are :P

so it can be 40-70 minutes for 50GB.

i mean most he reason this format was developed was to discourage folks from backing up the movie being its not cost effective. with the current movie format you can backup your movies for pennies on the dollar

I have been waiting for these as well i cant wait for prices to drop so we can use these like our DVD Burners.

After reading the speeds i will wait like everyone else for the speeds to at least increase and prices to drop.

My point was I wouldn't spend 3 a pop for them......

DVD DL finally came down in price to around $3 recently but you can find BD-R SL's for $14 and RW's for $18 that's really not bad if you think about it. It won't be as long as you think before pricing comes down. Like Zippy I'm waiting for the $300 drive price and disc's need to be around $3 the x factor isn't as important to me although the faster the better. I just would like the burner to drop so I could consider buying movies in BD or HD formats. Of course the price of the movies needs to drop to or below $20 as well.

TDK has a 100GB 6x disc that they are demo'ing right now, that would be 4 layers.
