4 July 2007 8:56 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 9 comments

Samsung gives details on Blu ray/HD DVD combo player At a media expo today, Samsung released more info on its upcoming Blu ray/HD DVD combo player, the BDP-UP5000.

The player will support all the features of both rival formats including web-only extras available through an Ethernet connection.

The player will have no problems playing movies ar full 1080p and can also output movies at native 24 fps or up to 60 fps for faster videos. The company boasts the player will eliminate stilted motion effects "caused by pulldown conversion" as well.

Although the final cost and release date were not finalized, Samsung said it should be ready for shipment in October with a price tag above $1000 USD.

Sounds reasonable for the price tag. But i want a player and burner for the computer first and i want it from Pioneer. :)

There seems to be a misunderstanding here.

The original article from electronista says:

Quote:
While the final cost of the player hasn't been finalized, the device should be ready by October or November and will sell at a roughly 400-Euro ($544) premium compared to a single-format Blu-ray movie reader by the time it reaches stores.
This means that the price will not be $544. This means that this unit will cost $544 above that of a single format BluRay standalone. Considering the cheapest BluRay standalone is $500 we can assume this Samsung combo player will cost at least $1044.

I can believe that. I just don't want to, but I guess my sense of judgment won't allow that.

Error5 is correct.

But considering the prices their 1st Blu-ray only players were this is an improvement.

It's only the 1st and undoubtedly it'll get better.

The specs look reasonably good so $1000/£500 might not be the crazy price-tag it looks (when one considers it is the 1st etc etc).

oh really?I think the 550$ range is correct because a lot of the hardware is dual function not 2 500$ hardware into 1 unit.

So the final price is likely to be 500-700 easy

zippy I think you're missing my point here; I'm not cheering on $1000/£500 dual format units but I am saying that as an opening full spec dual player (which the LG is not as far as HD DVD's iHD features go or the 1.1 profile BD features) it's a start.

Of course prices will fall but considering that a year back they were looking $1000+ for a BD-only player things are certainly moving in the right direction.
