Update: Demonoid will be taken offline by BREIN

12 July 2007 19:33 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 44 comments

Update: Demonoid will be taken offline by BREIN It seems BREIN has won their battle against Demonoid although the victory is very limited. Today, BREIN announced that Leaseweb has agreed to reveal the identity of the owner of Demonoid as well as take the site offline, this time for good.

BREIN also revealed that had Leaseweb not complied with their demand, they would have faced a 50,000 Euro fine per day.

"Hosting provider Leaseweb today complied with the demands of Dutch anti-piracy organization BREIN regarding the illegal website Demonoid.com,"
BREIN's press statement reads. "BREIN had summoned Leaseweb in a legal procedure demanding that Demonoid.com would be made inaccessible and the identity details of the owner would be provided to BREIN. The hearing was to take place in the District Court of Amsterdam tomorrow."

"Leaseweb signed a cease-and-desist undertaking which stipulates that it will keep Demonoid offline under penalty of 50.000 Euro per day. In addition Leaseweb supplied the name, address and bank details of their client to BREIN. These actions comply with the demands of BREIN which therefor does not continue with the hearing."

However, Demonoid has been preparing for the move and last week transferred their domain to Canada, so they will not be going offline, at least for the time being. They are also out of the jurisdiction of BREIN now, but the owner's revealed identity may prove damaging.

    Welcome to Canada Demonoid,
We hope you will enjoy our beer, women, healthcare and maple syrup, but don't stay too long. Our Prime Minister is Bush's lapdog and at the snap of his fingers Harper will jump high and proclaim you a terrorist, or even worse a child pornography site!

All of these problems caused to the sites is free advertising. More people are reading the articles and then going to the sites mentioned and learning about p2p service. Brein and others should shut up and leave this alone because there stupidity is backfiring.

yeah, i remember when i was the only one downloading music. i used winmx. this was in 2000. only a knit select group knew it, and when you mentioned free music people were like "omfg what?!?". but now everyone knows if not from friends, from these companies telling use the big names sites and programs for us to pick up and use now.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because you're so busy going from a to z, that there's 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

Moving to Canada is a smart move however revealing the identity can be very harmful. I hope it does not come to that.

I agree entirely. This could change at a moment's notice and get very ugly. I don't think any of us want to see that.

btw... HOT FROM THE PRESS... It seems as if the new Harry Potter book has already leaked and is now available on your friendly torrent site.

Yo ho ho and a download or two!!

Hi friends, if each user donate just one$ to demonoid, perhaps they would buy some new server, and law as well!

I agree with you that the way they are going after piracy is completely the wrong way. Because downloading music is culturally accepted, it will never be stopped or controlled. It's like the reason why you don't see anyone walking down the street without any clothes on. It's not because of the laws against it. It's because it is not culturally accepted.

The lawyers going after music pirates are the only ones making out in this. They can continue to collect their fees from a revenue stream (war on piracy) that is all but unstoppable. They can tout that they have shut down this site, or that site. They can say that they have gotten that 11 year old to pay $10,000 for the music that was found on their hard drive. But the net affect is nil. People will still download music without paying for it, as they don't see it as doing anything wrong. Some people will do it out of spite, sorta thumbing their noses at anti-piracy organizations.

The music industry will only succeed here when they have managed to change the publics perception of theft. When it is culturally wrong, ei, considered theft, only then can it be stopped.

Each time they went through their so called piracy stoppage rain they always make this stuff evolve into faster more secure level to transfer what we want. Stupidity is all this is and a waste of money and for those people in corporate America and so forth need to wake up and see that they are not helping or stopping nothing all they are doing is making is harder to break.

    Dear Reader,

I am a dutchman living in Asia more then 5 years, the most frustrated thing about laws about the internet that they are not all over the world the same. To stop talking about piracy.
I go many times to china Shang hai, and you can find on each street corner the best software and the newest DVD'S. Why sould I download the software if i can buy it for 0.10 cents a CD/DVD.
I think personally all these Film makers and software makers are allready earning more then ennough money. SO let them download, look you close one site but at that same moment 5 are new. You will never stop this. their are many more ways to get illegal shit. By message boards FTP sites. and many other ways, so let it free.. dont be dutch. first make rules all over the world that are the same. then you can do something about it. but till now you can buy in japan and thailand, china philipinnes all the newest shit. for almost nothing. so for now demonoid is offline just go to mininova.org. or another torrent site, we will allways find new ways to get illegal shit.
next time we dont use the internet but we will make our private satalite net. just over the satalites up and downloading, and I know that the technology is there allready, only a satalite.
Well a bit my frustration about this.... but I really hope that these dutch people are more smarter, because till now there are no global rules. let me know what you think..

There have been conflicting reports as to the current status of Demonoid. On Wednesday it was initially reported by a number of sources Demonoid was this time taken offline by CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association). Yet just the next day it was reported by p2pnet.net of Ontario, Canada that Demonoid was, in fact, not dead. I have included links to the articles to which I refer so you can be the judge. My thought... stay tuned. They will rise again.
