Sony PlayStation 3 will get DVR functions in 2008

1 August 2007 17:04 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 30 comments

Sony PlayStation 3 will get DVR functions in 2008 According to Warwick Light, the sales and marketing manager for Sony New Zealand, the company is set to launch a digital tuner for the PlayStation 3 in early 2008, a device that will offer programmable TV recording functions for the console.

Light told The Press the device would "transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people's changing entertainment needs."

"We're also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder,"
said Light.

Freeview is expected to launch in March 2008.

Games take time to dev better to be late than to be buggy or unplayable, its good to see sony working hard tog et the PS3 up to snuff, I still hate the price even 500 is a bit much but lil by lil it will be worth getting.

Wow! Maybe if they want it to "transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people's changing entertainment needs." They would make a Sony branded IR capable remote so you don't have to use a second frickin remote to use it.

Its not like they can divert everything to games. Believe it or not, Sony isn't made up of a bunch of people that are all capable of the marketing, game producing, and media areas. Better games is not just a matter of telling people "stop working on media and make better games." The games are from third party companies. What Sony needs to do is try to get those companies to produce better games by taking more advantage of the features and power of the PS3.

Well I already have a DVD player that records and burns, but an extra feature is always nice :)

Thats what I meant. Get the companies to take advantage of the features and power of the PS3 instead of just porting games. That takes a lot of manpower though because they have to code directly into the PS3 format.

well I do not see ANYONE pushing for quality and polish I do see them pushing for effects and power, and I hear sony is advancing efforts to udnerstand and optimize the PS3,its a real beast its going to a interesting 2 years as they optimize for it I just hope sony is ready to back a genuine world wide price drop to get it in homes 500-600USD would help the PS3 sale, sony is really in between a rock and hard place but when you build a console around power/tech losses are part of business.

The problem is that they should have deployed SDKs way sooner so devs could start working on good games so they could come out somewhat soon after the actual console.

Or do like nintedno who seems to build systems to their SDKs 0-o
Its like they upgrade their current SDK to fit with the new system, which I guess is no surprised since the WII is a GC 2.0 *L*.

but I guess thats the problem with consoles you have to reinvent the wheel and that leads to a ton of busy work every 3-6 years 0-o

but ya having the SDKs ready in a non buggy/slow version might be the thing to keep in mind.

DVR is a nice option, but I am wondering, in the US dvr either sat or cable supplier is an additional charge, plus propritary(spelling)equipment, how is Sony going to overcome that? Maybe making it open ended, but I know Direc TV would not stand for that. Just makes me wonder.

IF you read it properly you see the word "device" and "transform the PS3's capabilities". Hence it is not going to be a hardware change, revision, or anything like that, it is going to be an add on.

A bit like, say, the HD DVD add on for the Xbox360, something that the 360 couldn't already do. Which was definitely a move towards the home entertainment market, as they don't intend to bring out any hd dvd games.

I think this is a nice little add on, but, as i already have Sky+ HD, I do not need it in the UK.

However, again, if you read it properly, it is Sony New Zealand, a country that is launching free view digital through terrestrial transmissions in 2008, a place where people may not already have a digital receiver.

And, finally, to the best of my knowledge, an xbox360 needs a pc to record TV with a digital tuner.

maybe stop the pr spin and give ppl some games this is just going to end up another psx if sony continually lie and spin and not give ppl content to make it worthwhile to purchase a ps3.

My guess is that this will be a USB type of add-on with a coax connection at the other end. This would be similiar to what is available for PC's, allowing tuning and recording of digital off air and cable programming.

What Sony needs to do is work on making the PS3 FULLY backwards compatible like they originally promised prior to launch.
Then people would probably trade in their PS2 systems to upgrade to a PS3.
Seems like Sony is concentrating more on dominating the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
Message to Sony: Get 3rd party companies to create games for your Gaming console. If you wanted to make a media center then dont call it the PS3!

The games are coming. Just not as soon as everyone would like. If the DVR is an addon, then I don't see what the fuss is about. I also wonder how they are going to get past the cable and satellite companies, and also deal with the copywrite issues. I have DirectTV and have to pay a subscription fee to use my DVR. Will Sony also charge a subscription fee to use their DVR addon?

it's freeview, got nothing to do with satellites and cable. it's done through antenna.

should cost nothing, as it's called freeview

For em and other BWC is important but both sony and MS throttle it down because they have to many other things to do.

And yes thos 3rd party games are coming its just going to take awhile for them to show up.

I turely belive if sony bites the bullet world wide and drops the price 500-600 world wide they would have no trouble staying 2-4 million behind the 360 sony has to realize that 700+USD world wide is crazy.
    ==============================

this is the freeview in the UK is it like what will be in the US?

Now if Sony make a revised PS3 with a built in DVB-T (or DVB-S) tuner and DVD Burner then that would be the ultimate. That would replace all the little boxes sitting in your living room with one (or two if you like 5.1) sleek box(s). Maybe Sony could make a matching 5.1 system that neatly sits underneath the PS3. Then build a IR Remote that will control the 5.1 system, a TV of the user's choice (bit like the SKY remotes) and the media functions of the PS3. Now that's an idea.

Yeah if they did that it would be sweeter then all these current updates are but also because so many people are already in freak mode over the price that would just raise their system cost for consumers and push more people away. I would love to see that but cost wise its gonna hurt them more then help at this point. I do like that idea.

Well this another addition Sony will give the Playsation 3 so that it can also keep up with the DVR technology other companies are bringing out.

THis is some big ups for the ps3. now i see that some people are saying where are the games??? well just wait. cause all the good games for ps3 are all coming out next year and thats because they dont wanna rush on the games. unlike gears of war... they rushed the hell out of that game. ps3 said once they feel the game is ready then its coming out. other than that be happy with what we are getting.... capish.

and with all the glitches on rez its just as rushed altho it is just a generic shooter anyway, the sad thing abotu the PS3 is its going to take 2 or 3 years to build itself back up.

oh well least by then I can get a non nerfed 60GB unit for 300 :P
