PlayStation 3 passes "independent stress test" for durability

15 August 2007 15:21 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 58 comments

PlayStation 3 passes independent stress test for durability Sony America chief Dave Karraker has proudly noted on the official PlayStaion blog that the PlayStation 3 was put through an "independent stress test" by PS3 Vault and that it had passed with flying colors.

The test, entitled “How to kill a Ps3 Console” put the console through over 200 hours of operation in various adverse conditions that no gamer would ever have to endure.

The first part of the test placed the PS3 in a typical living room with regular temperatures and such. The test then ran the machine continuously for 108 hours switching between game playing and Blu-ray movie playback. "The only recorded anomaly was a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds.”

The second part of the test placed the PS3 into the back of a freezer van where the temperature began at 50 degrees Farenheit and slowly dipped down to 0. “We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees,” the test notes. “This was maintained for the last 24 hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden blackout to the screen, [but] this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.”

The final part of the test had the PS3 placed in a sauna where the temperatures fluctuated from 100 to 120 degrees Farenheit. “Strangely enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F,” read the test report. “The console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.”

After the test, the console was placed back into a normal environment setting and is still working perfectly.

In his blog, Karraker took one parting shot at the large failure rate of the rival Xbox 360, “A lot of noise has been made recently about the reliability issues of one of our competitor’s systems. So, not surprisingly, some of our more ambitious PlayStation faithful decided to run their own stress test on the PlayStation 3. They put it in a freezer at zero degrees for up to 108 hours and they put it in a sauna at 120 degrees for up to 64 hours — all the while running games and Blu-ray Disc movies on it. Did it fail? Nope. Like the Energizer Bunny, it kept going and going and going.”

Okay, so my Xbox gets hotter than Pop-Tart fresh out of the toaster, but IT STILL WORKS and I have 5 friends who own one and have never had issues, many of them launch consoles (including mine.) So needless to say, it irks me when someone runs their mouth about problems. The same people say that "I love the 360 owners just because their consoles end up breaking they have to come on here and try to justify not owning a PS3" when in reality, most of you that are bashing 360 don't own one and have no concept as to what the "rings" or any other "failure" looks like.

Zippy said it best about the PS3's quality of games not owning up to the price of the system. All you can do with the PS3 is watch an expensive Blu-Ray movie (more Sony shrill) or sit on your butt and wait for the "killer app" Metal Gear 4 to land on PS3. 360 owners will just wait a few extra months until Metal Gear comes to Xbox, something they can afford to do because there will actually be games for them to play in the interim.

Yeah, I know MGS4 is "exclusive", I've read all the articles that go either way on the story, but for all the R&D money being sunk into developing MGS4, do you really believe it won't pop up on another console? That's like believing Santa eats the cookies you leave out for him on Christmas Eve.

Once again this thread is not about the games its about the hardware durability, im not questioning the xbox does have better games atm, hell its been out longer, if i wanted a 360 i could easily walk to a shop right now and buy one, but with a 30% fail rate I think i will sit tight with my ps3 and see next year if its worth me picking up the xbox. I dont try and diss xbox its a great system and once they iron out the bugs i will prob buy one.

The issue with the PS2 lens was due to it being dirty. I have opened plenty and fixed the issue and it was due to all kinds of dirty and hair and whatever can get caught in the fan and lens. You cant blame any company for your own personal environment. Thats like sitting your 360 in front of a heater then calling M$ saying they sold you a piece of poopie doo.

I think we all can agree that the 360 would excel given the freezer test :-P

you do all realize all the 3rd gen systems were created 3 years before they came out so that means take off 2 years from the release thats when they realeased the realease date of the system.

please excuse me I am ventening and sorry.

I am a Nin child well maybe atari 2600 but don't know what age for what system for to be a child of that system does anyone I would like too know was 11 when I first got 2600 in 1982 so yes I am 26 and a video game person.

I have had a few to drink but really I would like too know what you think.

wolf1 on yahoo answers and you can't give me emails and messages but you can respond too my post.
No offence, but it's not sonys fault if your kids break it, or your dogs hair get in it. Accept some responsibility yourself. Eg clean it if it's getting clogged with hairs.
yes we do clean the hair and stuff off it but if you know about cat hair and dog hair once the hair is in the house it will not go away even if you vacumm everyday.

I was just trying too say it should have had more details.

Must say my PS3 never shuts off. No problems yet, have had it since Feb.

My PS2 been working since 2001 never died, just sold it and 7 old games for 100 bucks.

Should have kept it and brought the PS2 to work.

Just wait, the games will come for the PS3, xBox games sucked for most of the first year to.

I'm sure a lot of people remember me. I've posted on Afterdawn.com a lot within the past couple of months

I own both consoles (PS3 & Xbox360). My Xbox360 has broken down (again!) I requested they replace it with one of the new 360's that're being shipped to retail stores (the Premium one's come with HDMI and upgraded heatsink.) I just shipped it back via UPS so we'll see what happends.

Even though I have a PS3, gaming just isn't the same without my 360. I'm such a huge lover of online gameplay that my PS3 just doesn't stack up. Hopefully Sony will change that in 2008-2009. Sad thing is, I paid for the console in 2006 and so far the only game worthy of playing is Ninja Gaiden: Sigma which came out on Xbox years ago. And yes, it's the same game (with all the Hurricane Packs slapped in) with a little visual upgrade. But hey, it's a great game either way.

I haven't had any problems with my PS3 other than having no games to play on it. All the games that are JUST NOW coming out for the PS3 have been out for Xbox last year and they look and play the same so why buy 'em? I did, however, buy the movie 300 on Blu-Ray 'cause I couldn't find the HD-DVD version anywhere (BestBuy/Target/WalMart/etc...). I plan on purchasing the HD-DVD player for my 360 at some point. I like that it has both formats (Hi-Def and regular DVD version) on the same disc. That way I can watch it anywhere in my home.

And honestly, it's still kinda weird that the PS3's controller has no rumble and that once the battery decides to stop charging, I'll have to buy another controller 'cause the batteries aren't replaceable like they are on the 360.

The batteries are replaceable. Read you manual. Step by step guide on how to replace the battery if it won’t charge anymore.

Perhaps MS should take a few lessons from Sony when it comes to engineering.

as for the 'poor' lineup of PS3 titles, it has more interesting games than the 360 in less than half the same time, at least for my taste in gaming. So far:
    Xbox360:
    - Trusty Bell - Chopin no Yume
    - Blue Dragon
    - Bioshock

    PS3:
    - Resistance - fall of man
    - Minna no Golf 5
    - Ninja Gaiden Sigma
    - Tekken 5
    - Folk's Soul

See? All this talk about game lineups is very relative and depends on the tastes of each gamer.

But at least I know the PS3 won't die on my like the 360 does on 1/3 of it's owners.

Haha! I'm not sure which country you're from. I've never heard of "Folk's Soul or Trusty Bell?" From what I've read (from various publications) Tekken 5 looks and plays better on the 360 and it has online multiplayer capabilities, something the PS3 version doesn't have. Also, Blue Dragon is garbage. It's something Microsoft added to please Japan, why? I don't know. It's not like Japan is capable of buying 10 million consoles. USA and Europe are the largest buyers of foreign goods. I have Resistance: Fall of Man and it's nothing compared to GEARS OF WAR. Graphically or playability wise, it just doesn't stand up. Bio Shock looks interesting. The demo is available for download via xbox live. Xbox live is sooooo much better than Sony's online service. They only have Sony Pictures trailers for download and very minimal about of game demo's for download.

It's obvious you only have a PS3 and probably own a PS2. Don't get me wrong, they're both great consoles but seeing how I've had the opportunity to own both consoles, even though my 360 is in the shop being repaired (haha!) it wins hands with regards to the cohesiveness & playability of the xbox360.

Sony built a badd-ass sports car with no fuel to drive it. Sure it looks great, all shiny and black with cute bells and whistles but all it can do is sit in the garage and wait 'til 2008-2009 when fuel (i.e. better games) arrive.

Actually your wrong Japan & U.S. is the two biggest gaming market til PS2 was born. But Eur sales of the PS2 didn't get strong until the back end of PS2 life cycle.

Sony sold 10 million PS2 in Japan in 2 years.

Graphically i would say better but game play no way R.F.O.M got better reviews in Gaming mags because of its playability.I have played both & i can say that R.F.O.M is smoother than G.O.W. is it a better game? i would say its not but G.O.W isn't that much better than R.F.O.M.I wonder how many 360 fans feel cheated knowing that the full version of G.O.W is coming to PC this Nov.

A bit premature don't you think because 360 fans was bitching & moaning this time last year when LIVE sucked for 7 or 8 months.Plus why would anyone have a issue with PSN when they're not paying for anything.Plus HOME is coming this fall which i think was one of the best idea from Sony.

I have owned both consoles i can say that the 360 is a good console for now but the future doesn't looked promising to the 360.There are issues that the 360 will require owner to have a HD in future gaming.

Microsoft announced on Monday that it would soon allow MMO developers to require hard drive space when playing games on Xbox 360 despite the console maker's previous denial of such claims.

    http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=129068

There is also the issues with 360 having a dvd-rom drive.

Epic president Mark Rein said on Tuesday that Unreal Tournament 3 for Xbox 360 will likely have less game content than its PS3 counterpart due to Microsoft's limiting disc size.

    http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=129288

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=27675

I would say that the 360 future is looking real dim right now.I think we have seen the Best from M$.

The 360 is the HD console to own right now with the games that are available and the online experience is second to none.
The PS3 will be the HD console to own late next year or even 09 when it wil be cheaper to buy, more quality games that might use the CELL and the Blu-Ray disk to the full....one hopes!
